Horse's hooves cannot be rock hard because they need to be somewhat flexible to absorb pressure to cushion their joints as well as adjust to different terrain and not be so hard as to be brittle (and thus prone to cracking). Horse's hooves are surprisingly flexible to allow the hoof to spread out and then rebound back, thus absorbing pressure, yet they are hard enough to be durable.

She usually did well for the farrier but sometimes she'd get scared. Well she ended up nailing him clean in the chest with a double hoof kick... needless to say, he did not return
@@geochonker9052 Wild horses run on rough or uneven terrain so their hooves naturally grind down as they use them to run over rocks and gravel and if they don't wear them down they probably would just die similar to a Beaver not trimming down it's teeth enough. Domestic horses usually run on soft, flat fields and are rarely running on rocks so there's way less natural wearing down. There can be situations where a domestic horse wears down it's hoof too fast which is what the Horseshoe is for, if a Horse is carrying a heavy carriage over a cement road it would probably wear the hoof down too much so the Horseshoe is there as a stopping point so it can't wear down past the Shoe.
@@rubenisme Animals that have been domesticated for over thousands of years eventually develop in a direction where their body needs regular care from human companions. Cows need to be milked very regularly nowadays to reduce pain and chances of infections after developing towards a mass production of milk. Horses need to have their hooves trimmed because they have developed to be thicker to endure more strenuous use. Sheep need to be trimmed to not die from the weight, heat, and dirtiness after having their wool regularly taken for human consumption and thus compensating by overproducing. Not taking care of these things can give these animals an early death.

After seeing so many of these videos I ended up asking my friend about it how often she does this for her horses. She said that the horses on these clips are alot calmer than some horses can be. It's different from horse to horse she said. It still doesn't hurt, but some can feel anxious or think it's very unpleasent. Some horses dislike it so much that they need to be put on calming-drugs before they can start, cuz they were never able to learn how to adapt to the feeling, so he was stressed each time and needed to be calmed by medicines. So even tho it doesn't hurt, some horses do find it rather unpleasent🥰
Exactly. I for example have a huge fear for needles even tho I know it's not gonna hurt or kill me. So to stay calm during vaccinations and bloodtests moments, I have to look away and listen to music to ignore it better. It actually works for me🥰
My horses are barefoot trimmed only and my trail horse is booted (Easyboot Glove) for trails. I have one mare that was always jerking her hoof away from the farrier when she was being shod years ago before i made the change. Now she practically falls asleep when being trimmed. She also has high ringbone making hwr aituation more difficult and has done much better barefoot so her frog can touch the ground to encourage better blood circulation. Arguably many owners prefer metal shoes and some horses may require them but after much study and some excellent, knowledgeable trimmers that is what is beat for my 3. Its truly an interesting study and is my belief but not to take awqy the value of the metal show when necessary.

So if a horse's hoof is just a giant fingernail, wouldn't that mean the horse is tiptoeing
Every animal does, our ankles are actually supposed to be the "Second knee" let's call it, y'know? That part in a Cat's leg that is connected to their paw directly? The way we were supposed to walk in nature is by going ninja style, baby.
I feel like I could watch this for hours
For people who dont know - If humans didnt do this, eventually the horses wouldnt be able to walk right and they'd fall over and die. Doing this helps more than it causes pain. Its like a back crack, the horse feels relieved
So all horses in the past just got fucked over? That’s what I don’t get, it seems like they need humans

@@AsheVixen09 That's true, in comparison to things like stone though, they are soft. I didn't mean to discredit the durability of their hooves, I was just commenting on how the keratin looks ❤️
@@amyleah08 why would you compare them to stone tho?
Horse's hooves cannot be rock hard because they need to be somewhat flexible to absorb pressure to cushion their joints as well as adjust to different terrain and not be so hard as to be brittle (and thus prone to cracking). Horse's hooves are surprisingly flexible to allow the hoof to spread out and then rebound back, thus absorbing pressure, yet they are hard enough to be durable.

Horses can live in the wild without trimming
@@Evan-mt7bc Oh smart
@@rubenisme Animals that have been domesticated for over thousands of years eventually develop in a direction where their body needs regular care from human companions.
Cows need to be milked very regularly nowadays to reduce pain and chances of infections after developing towards a mass production of milk.
Horses need to have their hooves trimmed because they have developed to be thicker to endure more strenuous use.
Sheep need to be trimmed to not die from the weight, heat, and dirtiness after having their wool regularly taken for human consumption and thus compensating by overproducing.
Not taking care of these things can give these animals an early death.

We had a horse who was lame bc the previous owner haven't had a ferrier out in YEARS and his hoof had split down the middle to the frog. To make it worse, he was extremely headshy and would freak of you even thought about putting a bridle on him. He was lucky he didn't end up with permanent damage but it still took many many appointments with a very patient, very competent ferrier who gradually worked past the damage over time after winning our boy's trust. He was a sweet animal under the anxiety from years of abuse and neglect and I'm glad we were able to help him until finding people with the resources to offer him the retirement he and his barn buddy deserved
Oh, the poor thing, I'm so glad it turned out alright!

Kinda like humans getting worked up with medical procedures. Some are calm others get anxious
