Great video! As a Victorian, thanks Kane for the history and background of this junction. I really hope that it can be used again for trains in the future. Also, it looks like the track hasn't been lifted, so I'd imagine that's a big plus in reactivating the line.
I personally love Mount Lofty Station, I see no reason why Mount Barker can be connected via the standardisation of Belair. Which regardless of Mount Barker would greatly improve the quality of the Belair line while requiring nearly no capital expenditure. You could build an additional platform at Mount Barker station and dual gauge both tracks. I know a number of council and mp's support the idea in principal. But frankly the standardisation of the metro system virtually opens the door to a whole metric ton of options. Of which ironic enough from turbo toms perspective is under consideration. 45mins from Barker to Adelaide would be really cool, regardless good video Kane.
Great Video Kane and well presented! Personally I'd just love to see that section of track between Mount Barker and the Junction get some love so they can run the broad guage trains out to the Junction again!
Good video Kane. Well put together. Good little snapshot of it's history. As a fellow train enthusiast, you could've included a photo showing the 2 different lines parting, or even shown the 2 gauges as they enter the platform just in front of you. but that's just me. A great spot to watch & hear trains go by, away from the noises of suburbia & road traffic.
I had intended on showing the diverging tracks, but I had actually forgot to capture a shot before I had left 😅 As for the two gauges, I do believe there is a shot of the two gauges in front of the station, but probably not in the way you described
Sorry for the late comment, Great video Kane! And I'd have to say my favourite station in SA is Mt Lofty, just because its the closest station to where I live (under 10 mins away) and its also a nice station and is being looked after well.
I lived at Mt Barker Jnc in the early 70s, the house was right on the curve out of the station before the Junction Rd Xing. The station Master was a freind of the people I lived with at the time. I spent alot of time at the station as a kid and I have been in a few cabs of various diesels paused on the curve at the bottom of the house where i lived. I have been on many BlueBirds to town and back and the odd occassion a consist of Centennaries hauled mainly by a single 830. I have been on many ARHS (SA DIV) specials departing Adelaide Station on the broad gauge network, I loved the Mystery Tours but must of all I loved departing and arriving back at Adelaide Station....Steam Tours departing Keswick Terminal killed off my thrill of steam excursions, its was not the same anymore.
Rail deserves much more funding than it currently gets. I am fortunate enough to have a decent recent car but I'd rather take the train and enjoy the scenery. Make it high speed. Mount Gamber in 2.5 hours! Victor in 45 minutes!
As an urbanite, Woodville station is interesting but also has a fascinating history, especially at its four-platform peak during WWII where it included facilities to service the munitions factories to the north
Great Video Kane! I think they should have had the railway line between Melbourne and Adelaide dual gauge. My favourite railway stations in SA would be Manna Hill railway station.
I think what they should have done when they standardized was to add the third rail inside the Broad Gauge line like some parts of Victoria did to facilitate both gauges running the same route. It does work, it just requires co-ordination. This way Tourist trains can run to Victor Harbour again from Adelaide. I have recently come back from SA in that area, and as a train buff I was saddend to see that line was rusty and unloved in parts from Goolwa up to Mt. Barker. You made the point that it takes only about an hour to drive to Victor Harbour from Adelaide straight down the Fleurieu Peninsula, but I always enjoyed the scenic route via Mt. Barker and Strathalbyn, and I think many would still enjoy a steam train ride there as well. South Australia lost a lot of its heritage when ANR took over the running of the old SAR.
There are some periods where the line between Goolwa and Mount Barker receives less use than the Goolwa to Mount Barker section. That being said, SteamRanger has started a bunch of new and exciting trains that frequently use the Mount Barker to Goolwa section as of late, so I dare say that track would look much less rusted if you look now. Call me crazy, but I usually drive to Victor Harbor via Mount Barker and Strathalbyn rather than the freeway from Adelaide via Mount Compass. I enjoy the scenery and the towns you pass through.
You need to speak slowly and CLEARLY to get your information across on a video. Not everybody has perfect hearing. Most of this video was mumbling or gabbling and way too quiet. Be succinct.

Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Nice one Kane! Keen to learn more about the past, present and future of South Australian railways!
Cheers mate!
I live very close to this station and I come here lots with my mates. Great place would recommend!

Very well presented👍...my station since 1962 = Blackwood❤
Thank you kindly!
Blackwood is lovely, especially with all the heritage elements
Cool video, Kane! Keep em up mate.
Oh cheers mate! High praise, I gotta find the energy for more of these 😅
Great Video Kane and well presented!

Would definitely be fantastic to see, especially 520 at speed on that section between littlehampton and the junction
Cheers mate, Islington works is a great station with amazing history 👍
I’ll definitely have to look in to the history of it :)

@@KanesTrains Have you heard any updates on this ?, I haven't heard anything recently and really hope it happens.

Definitely envious of those fantastic memories you experienced, I wish I could have experienced steam travel through the Adelaide suburbs!
1:58 the car is only faster because thats what they invest in they dont invest in rail in sa and haven't for decades

Oh oh oh Kane, you have to do Nurlutta station! It has always had such grand architecture and a rich history, it would be well worth looking in to.
I’ll have to find the time 😎

Passager trains only as far as Strathalbyn from MT Barker.
Victor Harbor is the classic and my favourite
Many memories there :)
Nice
Thanks
I can see where he cut the video to film the SCT train
Mate, I'm a train nerd myself. This pathetic backwater of a state has no regional railways any more. We need trains to Mt Barker and the Barossa!!
We definitely need a major overhaul of our rail system, including both gauge conversion and extensions to the Barossa
Never happen mate
You need a railway buff as State premier like Victoria has then SA might get somewhere.
Well I might aswell comment my favourite station
It is… Blackwood.
Definitely a great station, especially with the vintage parts that remain
520 is a long way off. Go Fund me is paying for its restoration, not SHR.
Eh, there’s a variety of ways that funds are being raised. Go fund me is definitely not covering all of it.

Thanks for the feedback! I shall try better in future videos!
