I belong to the same community, living in Assam. Those who are reading my comment. You should know this, we (The Gurkhas community of India) have been demanding this for long (give more chance to indigenous Gurkhas). Anyhow now only 1/4th(in Gurkhas regiment ) are from Nepal. But trust me we have more than enough strength to replace them all. Don't worry about Nepal, Gurkhas will always be at the front line to defend this motherland.

India or the "Indian Army" is not great because of the Gorkhas but it's greatness is only enhanced by the "gorkhas" and if the enemy doesn't understand that, it is their loss. Sam Manekshaw's quote should not be taken as the final word as it is only based on his personal experiences but every man in this world is unique and has a choice to be great. The Indian Army still has decendents from the Mauryan Empire, Gupta Empire, Ahom Empire, Chola Empire and Sikh Empire who all work in harmony.

It is good in longer term. As india govt spends half of defense budget in pension so to overcome the issues schme was launched . In the modern time where technology is the highest priorit. Govt cant afford to have 14-16 lakhs army. It have to be reduced upto 12 lakhs. otherwise the proper utilistaion wont be possible. It is good for defense but not for civilians.
