Misbehavior, such as littering, etc. are the biggest issues caused by over tourism. There should be zero tolerance for littering, whether it's tourists or locals.
Earth+ its part of it, but most people I've seen just act like assholes no matter what country they come from. It's like going to someone's house and taking a dump in their bathtub. Just rude, disgusting and uncalled for. If that happened to people who are visitors, they might wise up and treat people and places better.
It would help if taxes were actually applied to rubbish disposal instead of locals dumping rubbish sacks in the rivers and sea because there is no official rubbish collection
Japan has a zero tolerence policy towards littering. You get a fine if you throw anything on the sidewalks. Which is why Japan is so tidy.
And cruise ships. With their decadent trash. They have no place other than to cause massive environmental harm while those on board drink themselves silly or dance the night away oblivious to the destruction of resources they are contributing to. Going to be a rude awakening for the sheep.

Even with overtourism why should tourists be pigs. Why throw trash on the ground or in the ocean. I think there should be patrols and HUGE fines and potential prison sentences for dumping trash. If no trash cans, bring it out with you. Being a tourist doesn't mean being a swine.

You are absolutely correct. I'd go so far as to see litter-louts being put on the next available plane back to where they've come from.
Agree entirely. Mass tourism has ruined many places because any old human trash can now travel. Monstrous cruise ships are responsible for the ruination of places like Venice, time to ban them from many ancient sites.

I live in Aruba and we have a tourism problem too even if our incompetent government officials don't like to admit that. Unfortunately, tourism is the only economic pillar we got. But it is more unfortunate when this only pillar becomes overwhelming for us citizens. Trash all over (i'd say 50/50 though, cause there are a lot of Arubans who litter also), noise pollution in neighborhoods using Tour ATV's, overcrowded beaches and unnecessary public funding for touristic purposes like more hotels. I don't fully blame the tourists per se, but I feel like the government should enforce some severe rules and restrictions to make the tourists aware that they can't just get away with everything they want to do (personally I'd like them to ban all noisy ATV's that pass through quiet neighborhoods).

That's what I was thinking. I was like "I have been to most of these places and they weren't this crowded." Idk why everyone feels the need to travel in the summer.

Problem with visiting off season is that this period is becoming almost non existent in many places like Rome, Paris, London, Amsterdam etc.
I think one of the reasons for over tourism is social media. Many people visit these places not to see it's beauty but to get pics for their Instagram..Why don't people just enjoy the beauty of these places and yes also maintain the beauty of the place if not for themselves then at least for the future generations..

You couldn’t be more right. You could not have hit the nail more squarely on its head. Bali, a place I lived in for two years, in a country I lived in for 12, is a prime example of this. Instagram changed the island. It changed the tourists that started flooding in. And it’s sadly changing many of the locals as well.
I’m all for free speech, but I gotta say it: Instagram has got to go! These places should figure out a way to put up a firewall around the app. Ban it from your country. You’ll thank yourselves in 20 years when you still have an intact set of cultures and a distinct lack of complete assholes coming to visit.
I'm from Greece and this is the case with Acropolis. So many people just climbing up there, taking a selfie and then bam, leaving. No appreciation at all for the historical significance or the ruins themselves!
I applaud Thai government for having the guts to close a very popular beach to recover its natural beauty!
100% agree with this post!!! I heard the sunscreen lotion was polluting the waters.
And the coral was getting destroyed. I remember seeing a video PACKED with tourists (mostly Chinese) so the boats must have been damaging it.
Its actually sad that we call that as having guts. Like countries are selling their environment and culture away for tourists. The environment should come first everywhere. Without a healthy environment we’re all in trouble.
It's pretty naive of you to assume they aren't still putting profits first. Ruined tourism attactions = less tourism revenue. Nothing about their choice indicates a concern for the environment itself.
Tourism in general is not the problem.
Tourism for a lot of places is big business and needed to help with there economy.
The problem in that tourist should understand and respect where they are travelling too.
Remember that as a traveler you are a guest in someone else’s home.
It is the problem in some places, it's for instance impossible to buy a house in Amsterdam or rent for a reasonable price, just because everything is turned into hotels and Airbnb's. It's getting out of control so that locals are leaving the city.. Of course tourism is great business for most places but it's not like that everywhere..
@@prins2x It´s just the same trouble here in Barcelona, mass tourism is synonym of gentrification.
Though one recurring theme here is cruise ships. They're massively polluting, dump tonnes of waste and don't bring in nearly as much money for a city as tourist who stay in a local hotel.
I do agree with you however that not respecting these places is a huge issue for tourism, but I think that even if you are still being respectful, being in a place as a tourist alone is still contributing to overcrowding. I live in Amsterdam and although people may be nice, they are still crowding up the sidewalks and bike lanes to where getting to and from work is a huge hassle.
Flying has become too cheap and there are too many hostels. I understand that it would be unfair to limit traveling only to rich people. But there is a need to find a balance.
Amsterdam shouldn't be #1. It's bad, yes, but cities like Venice and Barcelona are doing much worse.
In corfu is it very bad too.there are thousands of tourists in the roads

@@idealsoninlaw definitely, (I'm Dutch) and I'm not denying it's a bad situation in Amsterdam. Statistically speaking, however, Venice is just doing a bit worse.

@@melodramatic7904 I live in Paris I don't know what you people are doing. In New Year's there is a lot of great events everywhere but of course if you go on the champs-elysees for the firework it'll be crowded.
ALWAYS travel during off peak season. A much more peaceful visit. Absolutely AVOID major European cities during the summer months.
I agree with you, but not everyone can travel off-peak. The company I work for closes 3 weeks in summer, so my collegues and I need to travel at peak time.... But for people who can travel off peak it is great. Travelling in autumn can be nice, only for the colorful nature alone!

@@lewitm4591 because they can make places crowded and make the place less enjoyable. At least with venomous snakes, anti venom exists, so they have a cure. However, there is no cure for annoying tourists.
I live in Banff, Canada, which is in the Rocky Mountains, and every year there are more and more tourists. It sucks! I see an increasing amount of litter and stuff in really beautiful spots like lake Louise and Johnston’s canyon and it pisses me off like have some respect! I understand the frustration of locals in these even busier places.
Lived in Bali as a kid. Part of the reason we moved was because of over-tourism back in 2011. Hotels and villas destroyed the beaches natural allures, also there wasn’t an effective waste management system. Most trash is either burned or winds up in the ocean. Only surfable conditions was outgoing tide due to the amount of trash in the water. Seeing Bali in the vid gave me goosebumps. I could go on but I think this should suffice.
About the mount everest: please don’t forget to mention the sherpas that makes it possible for those „climbers“ to reach the summit.
The sherpas go Risk their lives for strangers, they help them with food and set up their tents in a safe place, they carry heavy stuff from and for the „climbers“ just for one or two people to stay on top of the summit and take a selfie and assuming they they reached the summit on their own, without mentioning the sherpas. They pay thousands just to climb that mountain and not even 5% of that money go to the sherpas.
I think they should stop letting people go on the everest for years. Just imagine that mountain 5-10 years from now: covered in waist, plastic, garbage and for what? Just for a person to stand on the summit and take a stupid selfie and not even mention the help they got from the sherpas?
And they also bring heavy stuff like furniture etc because they know that they have free Sherpa service to carry all that load for them
What else would those sherpas do though without the mountain and the tourism it brings what would those men do ?
When I went to Venice a massive cruise ship came in and thousands of fat Americans swarmed the city

One thing that'll help: Don't throw your garbage on the ground! Just think of it as your own house. Do you throw everything on the ground too? No one is going to clean up after you there. But at least that's only a problem for you. In a foreign country or just outside, it bothers more people and you might be the reason why a species died out.
I don't think overcrowding is the biggest problem. Littering is.
And the govts don't provide the services needed to tackle the litter problem, some places I've been you see no garbage cans and some places you see over flowing garbage cans.
Many places they have not moved over to Electric transport the air stinks of diesel.
Some places spend a lot of time cleaning the streets ie washing them down, but around the corner over flowing bins.
Stop allowing too many hotels, only allow hotels that are done tastefully that will enhance the local area.
Don't allow Taxis and busses to sit with their engines idling constantly at airports and city ranks, news flash they stink.
Provide decent trash bins that are not over flowing.
In vietnam we actually throw everything on the ground bcs theres no box to throw in garbage
@@michaelvu8776 Which is a shame cos I've been told Vietnam is a beautiful country, but doing this all the time will soon change it.
I wonder, if all the businesses put a wooden box outside their shops or by their stalls or whatever they use, and put the words put rubbish in here, and then instead of just leaving it on the road, they put it in one location and a town committee or whatever runs the local towns asked the govt to have their garbage collectors collect it on a regular basis if the govt department would do it in order to help preserve their growing tourist and local industry.
Perhaps in a location that would not offend anyone especially the locals.
Some times it takes a simple question to get results, not always but it might be worth asking who ever runs the local district for assistance in tackling the garbage problem.
They say if you don't ask you don't get, where is the harm is asking?
@@flitsies I went to Japan last year and there was no garbage cans, people take their garbage with themselves to their homes or wait to find one garbage can and will separate the garbage even outside their homes.

But in general most places it makes sense to either put out garbage cans to collect the garbage or do something.
Well it just makes sense really don't you think?
I mean if you are going to sell lots of goods with disposable wrappers it makes sense to provide a place for that disposed of wrapping, it's just basic sense.
Also if you are going to provide street food, you need somewhere for the waste to be put, cos you know there will be some.
But that's what I'm talking about, if a country wants tourists which brings in lots of money then provide the right facilities to cater to their needs, garbage cans, clean transport where possible, regulation on products and services and so on, it's basic sense.
Some countries don't bother and some people complain, but it's simple basic sense to provide the services you know will be needed to take care of the locals and tourism.
You can even make a top 50 of places suffering from mass tourism. It's nice that more and more sites and channels are starting to take mass tourism as a huge problem that needs to be tackled. Over tourism is not only damaging to the residents but also to the environment and authenticity of the culture.
I think this is partly due to media promotion if they promote other areas that kinda need tourism i think this would help everyone.
@@awsomemodels Yes! Promote countries in need of more tourists and promote alternative destinations. Another problem is cheap travel packages are everywhere now in this age of internet. Cheap travel packages attract cheap travelers who just want to eat and run or travel for the sake of selfie.

a small suggestion to foreign tourists who are planning to come on holiday in Italy, there are regions like Emilia Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo or Basilicata, which are not very well known outside Italy, but which have many attractions such as popular destinations. Natural beauty, history, good food, etc. can be found everywhere in Italy.

And as a spaniard who loves italy i advice italians not to mention too much those hidden gems to keep em safe as we do here with our north or central regions, we all got our ruined spots so lets keep the others alive
Much of Western Europe feels like this.
People who don't want to visit Amsterdam because of the crowds can visit Dutch cities like Leiden, Den Haag (The Hague), Utrecht, Haarlem, Rotterdam, Delft....all near Amsterdam and near Amsterdam airport. A convenient train system connects all these cities. Cycling the Dutch countryside can be fun too.
Great idea - let's ruin those cities too!
I agree Rotterdam is closer to Belgium where I'm from and you can find hotels for 100 euro/night in the center. Try the same in Amsterdam. And Rotterdam is much less crowded.

All these places are being ruined by tourists who go there JUST to look cultured on their instagram and Facebook feeds. If you didn't have social media and those going to these places for the ' perfect picture' I'm certain that these destinations would be less overrun.

When we went to Bali Last July I felt as if there were a lot of Aussie people. Makes sense since they are closer than the Americas. I didn’t feel like it was too crowded though.

Tourists are not very kind to the area they visit. I think it has to with feeling of temporary. People like how a place looks but don't think about locals who would like to keep it that way.
Not really true is it, tourists go to these places because they like the way they look and they also consider the locals how friendly they may be.
Often the locals look to make money because the country they are in cannot provide a decent living for them, tourism provides them with a living.
You also have to consider there are different types of tourists, some who go to places for the sports, for the sun, for the local scenery and so on.
You can't blame the tourists for a country that refuses to use electric vehicles and instead use Diesel vehicles for their taxis, or busses.
When I was in Dubrovnik I noticed the Busses all diesel, Taxis pretty much the same thing, I didn't see one electric charge point or one electric car or motorcycle.
The place was nice, but if they don't update then pollution will get worse, the tourists go and by them going provides work for a lot of people, they also have a tourist tax, not a good idea.
Govts seem unwilling to do what is needed to keep an industry successful, if you want tourists to stop going then all those people will be out of work, then the govts will be begging people to go back.
It makes more sense to set up a govt agency to tackle the needs of the tourists but in a way that benefits the countries not damage them.
You don't charge $1 to do a piss Dubrovnik, small change yes.
I think we can all agree littering and polluting the environment (by tourists and locals are not good).
I have seen locals throw trash out their windows in a car or just driving down the road on a motorbike. I throw my trash away always but in my experience it is locals who litter the most.
Also, garbage collection and disposal in emerging countries is not like it is in the developed world.
@@boblee4506 Exactly, when I was in Sardinia I noticed the place looked nice except for the garbage all over the place old fridges dumped on the side of the road old cookers on the side of a mountain, plastic bags littered all along the side of the road, garbage bins over flowing.
Some how I don't see people carrying their fridge on holiday with them, or leaving their truck on the side of a mountain to rust.
Oddly enough that was in what was supposed to be a touristy area.
Where the Hotel was and the ground all nice and clean well looked after, outside the grounds it was kinda disturbing to see the lack of care the locals had for their own land.
The majority of tourists end up carrying around their trash until they find somewhere to deposit it safely, even if the place is a shit hole.
I even saw the locals pissing up against a tree in the main square, because there were no public toilets, em didn't see any tourists doing that.

It's not the locals' fault becuase it's just how it is over there. But as these places get exposed ro the outside world I think it will change eventually.
A benefit of overtourism?
@@boblee4506 Yes I get that if you tour in a camper or caravan, but honestly there simply isn't room for carrying things like fridges on holiday with you as an air traveller, and anyway I'm talking double door fridge freezers and big ass cookers dumped in what is supposed to be one of their national parks.
I am so glad that I did most of my travels throughout the 70's and 80's from hitch hiking throughout Europe and travelling overland for one year from Europe to Australia when it was still possible to go to Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Nepal and India and Thailand etc with no mass tourism, no Lonely Planet guide, no internet, smart phones, go-pros and drones, just word of mouth exchange. Simple but very rewarding. I have memories of Amsterdam, Prague, Venice, Machu Picchu and so many other places before mass tourism makes it extremely difficult to enjoy the fascination of these wonderful places. I am afraid it is only going to get worse not better.
Bali is beautiful.... but some beaches are dirty.... too many tourists and the place became commercial.... everything is expensive.... everything is artificial...
but I still love Bali anyway.... 😀.
What I like most about Bali is the people know how to keep the tradition. 👍🏻
Literally every other destination in Indonesia is to prefer above Bali. Even the most Islands in the mediterranean sea has more beautiful beaches then Bali.
Bali is commercialized but it is good and bad.
Good infrastructure (transport, food, hotels, etc).
BAD - not totally authentic Bali. You have to go deep to find the "real Bali."

I'm glad I saw Iceland in the 90s when the Blue Lagoon wasn't so touristy and crowded
1st rule: respect the country you are visiting!
I'm surprised Prague is not mentioned! My worst overtourism experience, along with the Vatican museums.
Venice is not that bad. Avoid the path between the station and St Mark's square, and you will literally be alone.
I've lived in San Francisco (California, USA) since mid-1981. It has gone through many "tourist pain" phases throughout the past nearly 4 decades... *but THESE DAYS?* These days (2019) it's NOT so much the tourists as it is for the following reasons. #1) The HOMLESS; #2) The STREET-LEVEL DRUG ADDICTS, many of them homeless; and #3), but NOT least, STINKIN' TRAFFIC. People like driving to get here, as well as driving around to see, as the public transit DOES NOT meet the needs of the public. Also, San Francisco will erect anything over so much as 6-square-feet. The sky views from some of the best "walk streets" are gone. Also, regarding the homeless, San Francisco has become known as *"The city where DOGS must watch out for HUMAN POOP."*
The problem here is that people are boring and generic, they want to do what everyone else does for the 'I did that too' effect, another problem is we've convinced people that we have to speak well of every place we go and every vacation we take. If you tell someone that a certain location is overrated or shitty - WoW watch what kind of response you get. Btw missing on this list is Barcelona - just terrible, so many tourists, you couldn't pay me to go there again.
personally I would rather go somewhere different I couldn't find anything more boring then following the crowd and just going to one of the cliche holiday destinations. However Im think you should also add lazy to the reason why people go to the cliche destinations its easier to get a package trip its easier to sort out travel and easier to get information on the cliche destinations but personally I like that as it stops many tourists to certain places, the kind of people that have no imagination and just try to go to the cliche destinations are the people I want to avoid anyway. Also I think because of their expectations they also end up English/american enising everything, why would you want to go to Spain (as an example) and instead of eating Spanish food just eat sausage egg and chips??

@@soulspirit842 well I am unable to fly due to a heart condition so It has to be somewhere accessible by train, so I have more of a limit on places. This year I went to Rotterdam a unique city with a unique skyline and lots or architectural wonders also lots of history and a mixture of old and new I really liked it and definitely was unlike anywhere else I have been.
mintomax2 will have to bare Rotterdam in mind. I hate large crowds, over populated areas that ruin beautiful buildings/landmarks.

They have the option to control mass tourism. But GREED, yes GREED has gotten the better of them.

You simply cannot put any city at the top of a list. Once a place gets crowded, people will just move on to another and another until we wise up.

Yes, Cuban Havana is surely the next historical big city in the claws of mass tourism, invaded by Americans and Europeans, from here Barcelona and Catalonia included because many historic relationns.
And many Japanese tourists travel to here Barcelona, all they are crazy about Catalan Modernist Style buildings by Antoni Gaudí, and subsequently massified these constructions, when there are many other interesting Modernist Style buildings that simply ignored.
Mount Fuji is just a site, it should be removed. To put it on your list is like putting Times Square.
Most of these places aren't "ruined", but they ARE seriously diminished.
You've noted Savannah, Georgia in a few of your travel videos and so I'd like to say that that town is completely overrun with tourist. The native of that town can not afford to live intown anymore because investors have caused the property values to skyrocket beyond what anyone who isn't a millionaire can afford.
Australia definitely could use more tourists... we have lots of space!
Sure, but much of it is empty, inhospitable land. Not exactly the thing the average tourist is looking for. Don't get me wrong, I think Australia is a great place but it's much like Canada where I'm from, and few people visit Canada to see the tundra and permafrost of the Arctic.

I am from Mallorca (although I'm not Spanish but I live and work here and I consider myself a mallorquín too) and I couldn't agree more with what you said in the video.. sometimes we just have beasts instead of tourists throwing things on the floor or getting wasted at 9am or bothering all the residents like me with noise and shouts and loud music.
I really hope the Spanish government will take measure that can help to improve the quality of the turism in this beautiful island

Yea Morocco and Israel get crowded just from the locals. And you get hundreds of tourists at a time in Istanbul all visiting the sultenmeht at once. I've been to experience it.
What is different about those two in particular is the narrow maze streets in the cities that you can easily get lost it. Because it is so tight it feels crowded very quickly with carts and donkies trying to pass you. Fes is over 2million people alone in the city.
Morocco is so vast it is easy to avoid the crowds. Just dont go to the cities

I almost always travel in the off season. Fewer annoying tourists, meaning a more pleasant atmosphere in general.
Not to mentions shorter lines, cheaper flights and motels all for a much more more fulfilling experience.
For everyone saying Paris, just go off season or if you go in the summer don't stay in the center, go see other districts, go see a play or something if you wanna do museums come in the winter :)
Hi Mojo, as a Dutch citizen I would recommend visiting places like: Vlissingen, Westland, den Haag.. most tourist dive into Amsterdam but the Netherlands outside the cities is much more rural and authentic, take a change and visit local communities! And please STOP using and throwing away plastics.. this is a MUST.

Krakow does attract many tourists, I am not saying that it is overrun but it is on the beaten path.
I generally travel in the off seasons especially in Europe. I don’t mind less than ideal weather and you get to know the real culture and locals. It’s also a lot cheaper

I haven't changed any plans but overtourism does influence my choices. To be honest i go abroad because i want to experience places with their own traditions and culture. I feel it defeats the object of going abroad if i go somewhere packed with tourists. My first rule is that i avoid anywhere if i've seen programs on tv about Brits emigrating there.

That's what everybody wants to do but like the video mentioned, all these hidden places are being found and being overcrowded because people like you want that 'authentic feel' ... there are thousands of LEE ALLENS who think and do the same but on global stage now , and it will ruin these hidden gems. ..the power of the internet for better or worse.
I've been to quite a few of these places: Iceland, Dubrovnik, Venice, Amsterdam, and I thought they were all spectacular destinations despite the hordes of tourists. They are popular for a reason. Don't be such a snob and just enjoy it for what it is.
As a dutch person, I always thought going to amsterdam is no big deal, but don't be upset that locals can be a little annoyed at you for the literal thousands of tourist coming in every day to do stupid stuff. Go outside of amsterdam and explore more of the Netherlands!!
Wow Amsterdam made it to the list.. I'm Dutch but I hardly go there but when I'm there I get so stressed due all the people, the blinging of the streetcars (we don't have those in my city) and people ignoring some basic rules like stop for a red light, don't cycle on the sidewalk as that is for walking not cycling. I will be going there for a concert this week and was thinking of combining it with some tourist attractions I never been too but they are so crowded I think I skip them again like every time I'm in Amsterdam.

I was reading an article today which said those places experiencing the greatest increase in tourist numbers often are the destinations now used by low cost airlines. I wonder how much Instagram and TH-cam have contributed to creating a demand for some destinations as well. Great video.
I still travel about three months a year. But it's getting massively crowded out there on the tourist trail. Glad I hit so many of the world's 'hot' spots, including most of those mentioned in the video, years ago when the crowds were much less.

Amsterdam is a lovely place to visit in the off-season. You miss the tulips and green grass but you can still see the fantastic museums, history and culture
I live in Bangkok and I have noticed a significant increase in tourism since 2015. Wherever I go there are tourists. The prices of food and attractions have increased to gain profits from the tourists to the point where it is too expensive for locals. One good example is the train night market. A couple of years ago it was a nice place for locals to shop and eat food but now it is full of Chinese tourists coming in big groups.

I don’t know if Perth really should get more. Yes in the city itself it would be good, but the main attraction would still be Rottnest Island (where the cute Quokkas, the selfie-famous animals live). And even more tourists on that island would be pretty bad.
I was born in Amsterdam and I have been living in Amsterdam my whole life and i’ll tell you a few things about tourism in our city. First of all we DON’T hate tourists. Dutch people are and always have been really Proud of their culture and heritage especially people from Amsterdam so we want tourists to see what the city/country has to offer. But if you throw garbage on the ground or if you are nonstop high just because you’re in Amsterdam you’re disrespecting the whole city and everything we stand for. And that’s the feeling we get from tourists most of the time which is why we aren’t keen on them. Second of all there are a few basic rules in Amsterdam that we expect tourists to follow such as walk on the sidewalkes so that bikers can do their thing, if you smoke don’t smoke in public, etc and if these aren’t followed it can be frustrating. And finally Amsterdam is just a really small city that just can’t cope with the millions of tourists coming every year.

I'm Indonesian, and if u come here. There are so many alternatives beside Bali. U can go to Pahawang island in Bandar Lampung, Derawan island, Natuna island, Raja Ampat, Ora Beach in Moluccas, etc. Bali is overrated. Not recommended anymore.
Yep. I went to one of the alternative regions of Indonesia in February 2019 and found very few tourists, lots of beautiful water and marine life and delicious food. Never going back to the tourist hell-holes again. There are some parts of Bali that are OK, but it seems most people never venture too far from Kuta etc which is why it's so overcrowded.
@@JJJJ-gl2uf Yes. Even Bali also have other places to visit, such as Ubud, Nusa Dua, or u can go to Nusa Penida (small island close to Bali). Most tourists go around Denpasar which is the most congested place. In here, we also have small towns around big cities, like Karimun Jawa (close to Semarang), Thousand Islands (close to Jakarta), Sibolga/Berastagi/Singkawang (close to Medan), etc.
People don't want to go to the other places in Indonesia because it's Muslim and we don't want to get blasted by chanting on loud speaker systems at 5am in the morning

I went to Dubrovnik in February, had beautiful weather and it was absolutely empty ! We were able to connect with locals and it turned out to be a great weekend with us being the only tourists!

The increase in the rate of tourism there is heartbreaking. Watching a place like Kyoto go from a unique cultural icon to a Japanese theme park for selfie-stick toting tourists, all in less than a decade, is heartbreaking. And the Olympics and Rugby World Cup will only make it worse.
I'm just glad I got to experience this fascinating country before the influx.

Yep. Agreed. In remote locations and off the Tourist routes it's still magical. It's only a matter of time though. Our latest trip in January was a mixed bag. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kawaguchiko etc was depressing. Wall to wall tourists. But Sendai and the Kiso Trail were amazing.
@@spun_01 I highly recommend Hokkaido / Tohoku. That's what I did in my last trip, I landed in Narita, took another flight to Sapporo, and from there everyday I was going southbound, seeing many places from Hokkaido and Tohoku; a bit limited though because I dont drive so I could only go where public transport reaches. But yeah, I hardly saw any tourist :D However on the last 2 days of trip I went all the way down to Kyoto (JRpass!) to visit a friend and yeah, it was a massssssssss of tourists

I went to Bali in the 90's. My first experience with scams, touts, etc. Boy was i a rube!😂 But it gave me some good war stories. I did find it unique and beautiful but annoying. The instant i stepped out of the hotel property i would be surrounded by sellers. One pre-dawn morning in Lovina, i wanted to watch the sun rise and went to the beach. 0445 in the morning and a girl with a stack of sarongs starts walking towards me. Not one single minute could i stop to sit or stand in one place without being seen as a golden opportunity. Even the monkeys in the monkey forest of Ubud would not leave me be without an offering of peanuts😄💖

Have cruise ships actually been banned from Venice or is it coming into force some time in the future? There was report from last week ago of one crashing into a boat and locals protesting about the amount of cruise ships descending on the city every day.
I worked as a visiting artist on the Arts Centre Campus in Banff, Alberta, Canada one summer. While walking in the National Park's historic downtown, shoulder to shoulder with droves of tourists, I overheard a recognizable Southern States accent exclaim that "this place is lousy with tourists!" I rolled my eyes and pushed my way on down the street. These people won't ever understand that THEY are part of the problem.
I also worked for the renowned Stratford Festival of Canada. The small city of Stratford, Ontario hosts the largest classical repertory theatre in North America. Throughout the year (April-Nov) thousands of tourists descend upon the place and many businesses are seasonal. The remaining population is made up of blue collar and agriculture workers. One year a local ran for municipal office with the slogan "If it's tourist season, can I shoot them?"

On the other side... who else would visit Floripa if not the Argentineans? Brazil is not among the most visited countries in the world and when people come here they pratically just visit Rio and Bahia.

The worst problem is not the number of tourists per se, but a bad tourist culture: littering, making too much noise, disrespecting local culture, not treating monuments with care, etc. For tourism to be sustainable, tourists must be more responsible. We must take care of our world, instead of spoiling it.
Ecuador has actually done a pretty good job balancing tourism and conservation in the Galapagos in the last few years. There are a small handful of inhabited towns and other than that most of the rest of the land is national park where you need a guide present to visit, plus you are limited in time spent in each place and number of visitors at once. They also charge a 100 USD fee (yes, Ecuador uses USD) for entry. The whole place is essentially treated as separate from the rest of Ecuador from a customs standpoint. The customs process for entering Ecuador on an actual international flight is quicker and easier than getting into the Galapagos from the mainland. No one is allowed to move to the islands anymore and even Ecuadorian citizens can be "deported" to the mainland if they are caught in violation.
Popular destinations are just going to get more and more crowded with cheap flights and TH-camrs making certain places more popular!

As a Mallorcan i can tell you that in winter it remains almost the same. We have soft winters compared to northern europe so there are many tourists in Mallorca in winter too.
