  • • A Night at the Rijksmu...
    First broadcast: 18 Apr 2013.
Andrew Graham-Dixon goes behind the scenes at the Rijksmuseum as the staff prepare to open the doors following a ten-year renovation, the most significant ever undertaken by a museum. Featuring over 8,000 works of art, Holland's national museum tells the story of 800 years of Dutch history and houses a world-famous collection including masterpieces by artists from Vermeer to Rembrandt. So, as the final paintings are rehung and objects settle into their new home, has the long wait been worth it?

    Did you know?
    1. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is one of THE 16 RIJKSMUSEUMS in the Netherlands?
    2. That besides 'the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam' there are 2 more Rijksmuseums in Amsterdam? The shipping museum and the Van Gogh Museum are also equivalent Rijksmuseums.
    3. That the other Rijksmuseums are not only focused on art, but have different themes? The castles Muidersloot, Paleis het Loo and Slot Loevenstijn are also Rijksmuseums.
    4. A collection of castles in Gelderland and the Randstad (Rijksmuseum Gevangenpoort, Rijksmuseum Muiderslot, Loevestein Castle ) basically form the 17th Rijksmuseum? Named 'Castles Management Department in The Hague'.
    5. That the 'Randstad' region (3 of the 12 provinces) accommodates 13 of the 16 Rijksmuseums and the province of Gelderland the remaining 3. While the provinces, Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijsel, Flevoland, Zeeland, North-Brabant and Limburg do not receive subsidy for Rijksmuseums?
    5. That other regions have been asking for more subsidies for art and culture from the government for years, but still do not have a Rijksmuseum.
    6. The Province of North Brabant tried several times to get a Brabant Rijksmuseum, but this was always rejected. The Van Gogh museum (Around the BRABANT painter) .. is still in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum for Design in Eindhoven is also still bothered by the government.
This while the largest tourist attraction 'Themepark Efteling' and the best Dutch zoo of 2019 are housed in Brabant.

This documentary is very well executed. The commentator accompanies us on an impressive trip through the Rijksmuseum. As he has stated correctly, one cannot see everything within an hour. But this film gives us a good impression within an hour, which treasures are there to see in the museum. Thank you for sharing!

The new lighting in the Great Hall's a bit contemporary, is it even needed during the day with the big windows?

I seem to remember the Louvre in the eighties - and that great pyramid in its forecourt. And in the nineties having the British Museum getting renovated. Oh well, an excellent documentary

That pyramid completely ruined the aesthetic of the entire courtyard. Truly a monument to globalism and modern "architecture".

Let me be the first, evidently I'm the very first to say 'What the hell are you going on about?' This is 'Modern ' architecture of 'senseless and ugly'! (8:48)It's San Quentin prison all cleaned up! Really, white bars? Looks like a prison to me! They took a beautiful and historic lady and put padded bra and false eye-lashes on her and if the right people say 'How Beautiful she is!' the lemmings will follow!

that architect was a complete twat as well. really 'paying tribute' to the neo-gothicism by inserting a slate and glass tumor onto a beautiful building

Hold on, no other building like Rijksmuseum? What about the railway station... same architect.
To me the Rijksmuseum isn't Dutch. It is what they pretend to be the 'Dutch values'. It is there for the tourists, not the Dutch. It it were Dutch, they should have made it half the entrance fee. Now it is just a cash cow for the city of Amsterdam, nothing more than that.

  • @WaAaAaAaW

The only thing I don't like is how he pronounce Rijksmuseum. He pronounce it as if it's a German word. Lol. "Reichsmuseum".

The new additions are absolutely horrificly ugly. Modern parasitic architecture is a cancer. Way to ruin a beautiful old building
