Historians neglected the Gupta Empire, they were forced to write about them due to huge amount of literary and archeological evidence. They glorified Ashoka because he converted to buddhism and mughals just because they dont want Hinduism to be glorified. We hace era of Chandragupta Vikramaditya, as Vikram Samvat but they clearly neglected Gupta empire. Otherwise common Hindu polulation would feel proud of their history, which they dont want. Sandly if you read today's history books it does not feel anything. And even if you see just the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Maharana Pratap, Guru Gobind Singh any Hindu will feel proud and energetic without knowing anything about them. Gupta Empire is the greatest empire of Bharat without a doubt.

Eventually we do find a few empire's emerge that where strong - the magadh empire thwarted Alexander but Alexander shud never have been allowed to enter ancient Bharat ( Afghanistan downwards ) , mauryas drove Greeks back but these satraps waited till Maurya empire declined in strength by weak kings & attacked eventually running over most of n.india so issue has always been Hindu unity & in modern India it shows by voters.

We could actually trace the alchon path in Punjab through coins after death of budhagupta. .
First they captured the taxila , chakwal , Kashmir and jhang area. We had zavoko imitating gupta horseman coins there , both tormana and gupta coins found mixed there
After which they moved further, likely captured the fort of akhnoor and Gujranwala area. That became the base.
Now after which they moved forward, and captured sanghol , the main city of gupta in east punjab. We could see Huns likely captured a gupta mint.
Then they proceeded to rajasthan not mathura after than malwa
