The reddit post - www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/115ucm3/ltt_isnt_a_great_employer_has_a_lot_of_antilabour/ Wage Page - imgbb.com/Qcz2phW Canada Employee Protections: www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/corporate/portfolio/labour/programs/labour-standards/reports/termination-rights.html I tried to be as objective and reasonable as possible. In the US there is a stipulation where HR and Payroll Employees cannot disclose other employees wages, but they are still allowed to talk about their own. Maybe they have something similar in canada. However; If that's the case - the handbook should specify & clarify who that policy applies to. I'm not a lawyer but it seems like it applies to all employees. The language reads absolute in that 'all wages are highly confidential' and 'is not to be seen' by 'co-workers and third parties' so that would include the employee talking about their own pay to anyone. If the reddit post is legit....Why prevent workers from talking about pay? There is no solid reason imo, especially at a place like LTT. If you're afraid workers will be upset at the pay differences, it doesn't mean you should ban the discussion of it. Keep things transparent from the start, and then if people don't like the pay they don't' have to take the job. The employees don't have to like the reasoning of the pay differences, but if people want to talk about their own, they should be able to. Otherwise it just says to people that it's too frustrating for their worker to justify different wages in different positions because the employees don't usually like the answer. Well - why wouldn't they like the answer? Is it because it's not fair and there is favoritism? With this policy you'll never know. This just leaves so much potential for employee favoritism. The places where you can do this nonsense is also rapidly shrinking. WHY LINUS. Feelsbadman.jpg EDIT - Wall of Text for "WHY YOU SIMPING FOR LINUS?!" I'm not a super fan of Linus, and I never really had a formalized opinion of him. And I admit - like most people my age into tech stuff, I've seen his videos when I was learning about computers, miring all the gadgets I couldn't afford. So there absolutely could be some inherent bias, but it's not intentional, and I'm not trying to ignore the facts. I agree 100% there are just times when you have to call a spade a spade. However; the complaints needs to make sense, and I touched on the ones that I thought were worth talking about in any extensive manner. I mean. Some of issues highlighted are singular to the employees preference, yet they claim to speak for everyone at the company. That's not how you prove a point. So first off - For me and my goals and preferences in life I wouldn't work at the place described in reddit post. No remote? Pass. Stereotype manager meme where "they're the only ones that 'get paid enough to afford it'? Yeah probably pass on that. Pay too low for me to do what I need? Pass. But ...if for some reason I did HAVE TO WORK at LMG and it is what is described in this post? - A reddit post wouldn't be my priority. I'd probably report the things I could and then I would also probably be trying to find a way to leave, and go somewhere better. IF the wage theft accusations and wage discussion ban are legit, then that's absolutely unacceptable. Wage theft happening? Report it, They pay fines. Wage talk prohibition clause when it's illegal in most other places in the world? That's pretty ridiculous. I'd probably tell people about it. But like.."They make me use google spreadsheets to input time!" No. come on lol. If the point of mentioning this was to say it correlates with the wage theft accusations, they didn't really make that connection. So why mention it? Most of the other stuff they write about? They can't change because they are not the owner. That's just how it is. Absolutely you can try, be my guest. Make your sound and well reasoned points. Try to talk with them and hopefully they're understanding. If they don't understand and you don't like the result, now what? You're not the owner and if they aren't doing anything illegal - not alot left to do. In my opinion - I doubt that shaming your employer on reddit while you work there will get you any good will, and going forward it will most likely make it an even more miserable place to work since now you both probably hate each other, but are now just probably 'legally' in compliance and working together. If you are the person that can deal with the daily animosity between who pays you and who you work for. Go for it. I just don't think if I would spend the time to make a reddit post with factual mistakes("falsely stating canada is NOT at will"), logical fallacies(hasn't worked a 'real job') and other petty complaints that seem to be REACHING for anything else they can add('we have to use google to enter our hours' / 'they don't want to pay overtime' duh. of course not. go ahead and try though for sure, always. ) and other contradictory statements(work remote?! forget it! but you get 2 days). Another reason I take issue with this is because it does such a terrible job at trying to make somewhere look bad, that it ends up making people like myself that make similar content - also look bad. You wouldn't believe the amount of time I get confused with someone that 'is known for x' without ever saying or doing x. I mean - even according to Louis Rossman's stream from a couples weeks ago when he recognized me in the chat he said something to the effect of "oh you're the guy who doesn't like business owners". From my POV I imagine it's because I explain how business owners can and do manipulate, and other corporate realities. I was surprised because Louis and I agree on more than most would imagine. My point being; I am often conflated as someone who thinks all business bad, all work bad, all bad. Believe it or not - I recognize not every company or every CEO are the examples I show. Perhaps my audience has been convinced otherwise. If that's the case I apologize. I try not to speak in absolutes. When I see someone else try to roast a company, I'm all about it. Can't wait to see. However the arguments and accusations need to be worth talking about. Usually something that breaches the law. Beyond personal preference. For example - if you want to say "This company is trash because they don't allow remote for positions that can easily do it! Then you should also acknowledge not everyone else may share preference or that opinion. In my videos where I make fun of returning to the office - I even admit my bias going in and say 'but let people do what what works best for them'. My videos are to call out logical errors in their reasoning, or to make fun of hypocritical things they say. Of course I poke at things from my bias, but I admit it. I attempt only to show you that their reasons for things are ridiculous or incomplete, or maybe just false. Its then up to you what to do. I try to have self-awareness. I just didn't really see that here in this post. IMO In the post on reddit there are only 2 points worth talking about. Wage theft accusations and wage talk prohibiton. The rest are hearsay and anecdotes ..by it's own admission! It literally says in the post "I heard". While I believe hearsay can actually be legal in some situations, I imagine a lawyer would say that's probably not the best way to start or continue an argument. Think about it for second with me- Imagine if I made these claims? The audience probably would say 'well josh is dumb...you can't be like "WORK REMOTE?! FORGET IT!' .. because you still get 2 days of remote?' Imagine if I accused someone of wage theft like essentially like this post did without any evidence? The audience would say 'RIP JOSH HOPE YOU HAVE PROOF' Imagine if I said 'THIS COMPANY MAKES YOU ENTER TIME IN GOOGLE SPREAD SHEETS!' The audience would probably say 'Yeah Josh, well imagine bud, companies are different, and that's what they chose to do there bud'. I completely get that people have to take whatever job they can sometimes, but if you're going to go the route of 'shaming them into submission' or 'exposing' them, or whatever this reddit post was trying to do - you can't make these sorts of mistakes.
Any chance that employee handbook concerns the HR people? like they have to protect the information of their employees, but the employees themselves can discuss their own wages as much as they want? Kinda what it seems to me
@@remysavary689 I've linked the page with wages here: imgbb.com/Qcz2phW It seemed like a general employee handbook to me, and that's also the way it was framed on reddit as well. The comment in the post saying 'you can't talk about other people's pay' makes sense now. Perhaps when questioned by employees that was just the smooth response given. The wording of the the handbook is vague. You're right though - at 0:59 in this video I actually show that HR and Payroll employees with access to pay information are not allowed to share other people's pay, but they can talk amongst their own pay, atleast in the US. But.. I don't know why it wouldn't specify that in the book though. It seems odd. I have no idea, but knowing lawyers and contracts maybe it's in there and vague on purpose to be 'used' as needed? The post also claims that people have been disciplined talking about their pay before though, and they are what I'm assuming to be 'non hr' people. The post never specified, the book doesn't specify. There could also be a high chance this a salty employee or a rando claiming it, that made this post to be taken out of context completely.
Yeah, this is great! I don’t know who’s the majority of Josh’s videos, but this attitude is really good - I hate r/USdefaultism since people from the US usually don’t know that there’s the rest of the world, not only their country. And Josh while being a US citizen still talks about non-US stuff and mentions this. Sure, he’s mentioning such important things like laws and stuff, but still kudos to him for doing so. Not only doing so, but explaining and comparing to the US laws.
Of course no employer wants pay to be known! That exposes favoritism, prejudice and other inequality. Plus, it lets job-seekers know what they can fairly expect 😱😱
Australian government bureaucrats all have set salaries which you can look up publicly, if government can do it and not fall apart I don't see why it's so hard for the private sector. Apart from the shenanigans you mention ;)
I guarantee LMG uses A PEO (Professional Employer Organization aka outsourcing HR) and they will usually be as harsh as the laws let them be to give the organization the most possibly to let go an employee and/or protect the owners. That's still on Linus, but the PEO goes unchecked in these talks, and a lot of these hard anti labor rules come from these organizations.
@Stephen De Tomasi agree, but Linus and the C-Suite doesn't get the pass it needs to be addressed, especially if he cares as much as he said. But PEO's are the silent enemies of labor rights in start-ups.
@@jshyne213 I see this as most things... One thing is the written rules, and another are the actual rules. Maybe Linus never enforces that rule. In that case, it would be nice if he changed it, but to think he is a tyrant because of this is ridiculous to me. Of course, I would change my mind if he actually enforced it.
I agree! The salary policy is quite the give-away. It all reads as just very much on the border of what is legally possible for them. Should Linus check on his PEO? Yes, of course he should. They also aren't doing anything illegal from what it seems. The company and these HR organizations being quite anti-union and anti labor regulation shouldn't be a surprise to anybody with at least somewhat work expierence. Trying to maximize your "wiggle room" and personal gains and profits go both ways - workers can do the bare minimum for the maximum achievable pay and the employer can try to push his policies right up against the legal framework he is operating in. The redditor seems kinda super salty and if I had to take a guess I would say something a bit deeper happened during their time of employment. tl;dr - some redditors go shocked pikachu face, when they find out that their favorite tech youtuber also happens to be the CEO of a 70+ people big media company and besides dropping CPUs he has to also be the CEO.
Well, his wife runs the HR (last I heard it mentioned on the show) so she should have read it over at the very least. So she knows what's in it. Or she's incompetent. Hope it's not the latter. But the former is not a good look either.
Not just smaller media companies, any business that looks desirable. The video game industry is notorious for attracting great talent but underpaying and overworking the crap out of them. Alot of the times is because the employees want to be part of the team that makes the biggest games. Tesla is another example, people flock there due to their notoriety, but if you search their wages you find that they are underpaying compared to the rest of the industry.
As Thiccolo says, I would even add any company, and if they dont try to underpay you, then there is a culture of overwork.Only exception would be the Public sector in several EU countries? You have to be ready to move to get something better. The reality hits when you have a partner and kids, because you cannot gamble anymore...
Cool factor or they will say they are a "progressive" company, or we are all family here. If you hear that during an interview, just nope out of it. Wish someone had told me that when I was in my 20s.
I got laid off for the 3rd time since covid. The fact a company wont take a 10% loss in a year and know they will make it back in the next year or so and just wnat to make it back immediately by ruining lives is beyond me. AND THEN they complain about quiet quitting and loyalty.
Then boomers talk about how "the young people dont want to work" as if 1) They have any idea what its like to look for work in the 2020s (or even the last decade) 2) No one wants to apply for job that they think will go away on a whim because the economy has been destroyed by COVID culture and other terrible political decisions.
Mine just did this last Friday after three years with me training many employees, two pay raises, said I was getting a third and all was good with my year (above and beyond), then just left me high and dry. So glad I worked those after hours, morning and weekends.
It’s largely due to the optics of business. It’s easy to hire/fire people to adjust your assets/liabilities. I agree it’s dumb but it’s done to secure more money and longevity. If people supported businesses that took on more risk for employees and growth that paid off I guarantee companies would funnel in on riskier plays.
(or read the whole transcript someone made for him LOL) He should watch it, because if he doesn't address it and doesn't watch it. I'm done, and a lot of ppl will be done with his double standards. I no longer watch the WAN show as it is all drama & hot takes that lead to nothing fun anymore :( - he's always only trying to prove his point and Luke just sits there, staring into his face, "do not say it" or "change the topic to something viewers want to see/hear".
@@psyaviah he won't watch any of it he'll have someone on his payroll watch it and write a summary for him that they'll make obviously to make him feel better because they're not going to hand him a summary that actually criticizes him for legitimate reasons. That's what he always does
Or, Linus just wanna pay his employees average salaries based on Canadian statistics, cuz if employees knew how much their company makes, they might ask for more. I don't know if that desire comes from mere greed, or they just wanna get paid what they think they're worth.
@@smilodon92 he gives them a massive raise after a year. I think making 50k to make 60k after a year isn't a bad deal. There's almost no companies who do anything like that
Tell me what they're worth because the salty reddit post literally doesn't even mention what the market rate is Out of the entire video, the only thing that is sus is the stipulation on not discussing pay
Can’t believe he’s against unions because it “means you failed as a boss” meanwhile he doesn’t give his employees enough time to properly test stuff or go back and fix mistakes, now this? This dude is smoking crack
Not going to lie, I believe the best part of these videos is getting a quick summary of worker/employment laws for North America and/or Europe, not even the video subject in itself.
I mean the employee manual discussion on pay being confidential is sketch AF but I have to agree, this feels pretty petty overall. I mean working for other people sucks and to a certain degree this is unavoidable, but some of this stuff is "I wish he'd do things differently" as opposed to "I wish he'd do things better"
Even in the US I’m sure employers give employees thinly veiled threats if employees discuss pay. They’re betting the employee will be too busy or too poor to hire a lawyer and sue. Just because something is illegal doesn’t mean that it still doesn’t happen.
@@JoshuaFluke1 This absolutely, hell half the reason I used to believe I couldn't talk about salary was because the companies I worked for had HR policies saying I couldn't.
They tell you not to do it and then very not so subtlety tell you if you do it you're gone. Everyone does it anyway. We just can't use it in negotiations because of it. You go into a wage negation and use a coworker as an example and they just freak out. Not like they intended to give you that raise they promised anyway. I got hired on at 20 an hour for a job with "growth potential" 🙄. They went on and on about how since they were small everyone in the building would be rolling in it good if only we had the chops to eat shit for a year. After a few weeks of reading my boss and determining this was all a load of shit, I went to the most senior sales agent (best numbers virtually allll the time) abd asked about wages. She informed me she was payed 15 abd had a higher sales target to make bonus. She had been denied 6 times over the past 2 years for raises. I left the next day. A few days later she called abd said she had left....along with 10 others. Nearly half of their employees gone in 3 days. I started a fire 😎
100% agree with your comment. I've seen so many false accusations on social media that anything a random person might say without evidence immediately raises red flags.
yeah i noticed that too especailly the writer area in which he questions the post not telling average salary for writers, these sorts of things are making this quite the entertaining vid for me.
I don't think he is. His wife on the other hand seems like an old corporate tightass boss and she has same say if not more when it comes to corporate governance. Linus admits he is more of a creative during one of his last WAN shows. Or another story on how his wife could not get along with Luke when it came to business, like not at all. And the only way they got along was for Luke to change his attitude towards Linus wife.
I work as a truck driver in the LTL sector and the culture is so much different. When training a new guy usually the first question is “what they start you at?”. They started hiring guys at the top rate instead of the the discounted rate for a year like in the past, but everyone is paid the same. We also have metrics so there’s no “seniority”; if you’re crap at your position they’ll move you.
Vancouver, BC is extremely expensive to live in. So, 50k-60k is kinda low. I would use it as a doormat job until getting to something that pays better. My issue is that he doesn't want people discussing pay. That's the main thing that's fishy.
Linus is located in Langley (which is slighly cheaper than Vancouver) but I got your point. I would say 50k is just "fine" to live if you don't have children. But I agree with you in complaining about Linus refusing to discuss pay. Most of the post on subreddit was just personal complainings, but compared with jobs in the US or Mexico (where I live) LMG is just an "OK" place to work.
There is a unofficially ban in indian companies about disclosing CTC to your colleague. People with same years of experience are paid differently here.
9:00 - no dental isn’t free in Canada. Free health care is more limited than you’d probably expect. It’s still really good to have extra health care in Canada (for covering stuff like dental, physio, orthodontist, prescription drugs, etc.)
Linus will just post another bad twitter take and make a video whining about it so that he can continue to afford making payments on his new porsche and renovate his new multimillion dollar house.
@6:50 first thing that popped in my head with the words "Dental Plan" was the simpsons union episode where the words "Dental Plan, Lisa needs braces" kept going through Homers head
Great video. I love how the ChatGPT says the number 1 reason was: To maintain salary disparities. This basically means "keep employees in the dark about their real worth so they can underpay them".
Or to keep employees in the dark about their real worth. Full stop. I'm willing to bet you're in your 20s. I got paid more than most of my colleagues at my last job. I did a lot more than most people but a lot of people I told would get mad and quit because they FELT they deserved more based on 0 merit. I think people forget that people generally overestimate their ability and therefore how much they should be paid.
@@Mythicalgoon If they left and got paid more, then they were right about their worth. A company will pay you less than you're worth if they can get away with it.
@trutrek people who left to companies within the same industry often got paid less, came back, then continued complaining. So no, I don't see why you're instinct is to believe they were getting underpaid when you know nothing about the people or even industry I'm talking about but I'm willing to bet you'd do something similar.
@@trutrek913 That is not necessarily true. In software especially there are quite a few overpaid engineers. They got hired on for a larger than usual salary, because other constraints besides budget for that particular quarter/year/project were more important. I have joined development teams, where everybody was basically a new hire and got hired in a rush move because project due date was coming up and maintaining that was more important than a few 10k in salaries. My skills had fuck all to do with it. After 3 months my lead was shocked to find out that I worked on certain things and he had no clue that i was capable of it. I did list those skills on my CV and I sorta thought that it was part of the reason they invited me for an interview etc. He just plainly admitted, that he had never even read my CV and just looked at the first 2 or 3 lines and saw "Engineer with 12 years of expierence in ..." and invited me over. I was never tested nor did my skillset determine my salary. Mind you, this was at a rather large corporation.
@@bassstorm89 Not everyone is that lucky to get overpaid. In your case, they were in a hurry to get a project moving along. At least 30% of companies, they pinch every single penny.
He doesn't have an anti-warranty stance. His point was a warranty is only as strong as the trust you have in any given company.... and then they wrote up a warranty. People blew that way out of proportion and his original point is valid.
@@samswift102 if he does that AND is Jewish, I'm sorry, but some Jewish people are being greedy and don't like to pay anyone anything unless they absolutely have to. Linus is under the impression that unions are antagonistic action against employers. When they really should be a routine organization where workers get what they need and employers get workers who feel secure and probably will stay longer.
Issue with unions is their still a business they care more about billable hours and the collective over quality work and individuals. They are a good thing overall.
The baseline employee protections in canada are already just as good as most us unions if not better. The only thing unions do in canada is negotiating pay, but that means productive employees can't get paid their worth and less productive employees get paid more then their worth
@@Jet-ij9zc The most productive employee rarely gets paid their worth, on the contrary they're the ones most likely to get their effective work exploited by getting tons of underpaid responsabilities thrown at them.
The problem with unions is that their care about seniority and not worthiness or productivity. Unions are good for those who want a stable and long term low level job, but are bad for motivated and ambitious employees.
Ya'll, you can still get promotions and such under unions. I don't know where some got the idea that unions make sure everyone is exactly the same, forever??
Some new people probably. Like Linus has mentioned "poaching" Riley from his previous job so that probably required some incentive and now they're hiring all kind of IT guys for the Lab, those guys probably know what they're worth. If you're just hired as an unknown writer or something though you're probably paid way less. Like between all the different roles, skills and market forces people there probably get vastly different pay for all kinds of reasons...
I'm immediately thinking that this snapshot looks like a snippet of what HR needs to be aware of, not the general employee. HR should not be discussing other people's wages because they have access to all that info.
Maybe it was snapped out of context, but I didn't read anything about HR or Payroll. Just a general employee handbook with that policy sitting in there. imgbb.com/Qcz2phW
Bruh wtf. 55k a year is good. 65k a year after proving yourself is Great. Speaking as a 35k a year 10 yr forklift operator busting my ass in warehouses
I guess if you can work remote from home then the boss has no control over you? The idea that working remotely means less productivity is just a myth. I'm only guessing that bosses requiring people to work in the office as opposed to working at home do so for I guess the feeling of dominance over the employees.
It depends on the individual. Some people work less effectively remote some more. The job I work at is 100% remote, and I've seen things that people would absolutely not get away with if the job were not remote (they eventually get caught remote too it just takes longer for someone to notice)
@@justinwhite2725 I think there might be correlation between being an extrovert and introvert vs lower productivity and higher productivity in working remotely from home.
In Canada it depends on the province’s law. In nova scotia it’s illegal to prevent discussing wages. But in BC (I think that’s where LTT is located), the employer is allowed to punish their employees if they discuss about wages or salaries, sadly no law protects them. Edit: In Quebec too you’re protected, if you’re punished or lose you job because of that, the CNESST will protect your rights.
In Nova Scotia they also enroll you in organ donation without your consent. It's up to you to go unroll. When asked why they do this, they said, "because people would never sign up otherwise and not we have a wider pool to select from". Canada is the most corrupt shithole in the entire Western Hemisphere.
@@SrChalice also here is Quebec if you sign up for organ donation because you want to save lives, if only 1 member of you family says « nope », all the forms you’ve done are worthless and your good organs won’t be used to save lives like you wanted. Wait I’m confused. Josh, when you’re reading through the Reddit post and dissecting each complaint, a lot of your arguments you made (“if you don’t like, why work there?” “Linus can change his WFH policy, it’s his company”) seem to be aligned with a lot of other CEOs in the past couple years that you yourself have denounced and criticized.
Why is everyone so hung up on this...I STILL think it's dumb that its only 2 days WFH for positions that can do it all the time. I think they should be able to do what works for them. Linus thinks otherwise according to the post. He owns the company - I do not. So he can tell us to take a hike and nothing we can do. It would be cool if he changed the policy sure. Maybe he does one day. But what is the point of writing about it on reddit? If you want to work remote what can you realistically do about it? You can talk and express your concerns, and hope they listen or leave. They have that power. That's how it works. I've always said that. It doesn't mean I don't think it's dumb.
@@JoshuaFluke1 yeah I mean you make good points. And I mean, I don’t disagree completely, shit happens and we can do fuck all about it with these companies unfortunately. I just got confused because - and admittedly I didn’t finish the video - it sounded like in the first half you were roasting Linus as you normally do with various CEOs doing crazy things lol which is why I love your content. And then part way through, you started coming off as defending Linus? And I thought we were in the camp of poking holes with Linus and how he manages the company. But then you started supporting it? Which I mean, it’s fair, I just was confused with your stance on it. And yeah I know the OP on this Reddit post isn’t perfect, but I mean a lot of their complaints I think are valid. Especially just the general concept of venting on Reddit, and I always appreciate anyone giving the hot scoop - positive or negative - on the inner works of a company, even like Linus’s. But I felt thrown off because a lot of what you were poking holes with in this Reddit post is usually your typical rhetoric.
Josh here doesn't seem to understand even the basics of salary compensation - that different people perform differently. Let's throw away performance incentives and pay everyone the same regardless of how well they do a job. We have this whole thing about quiet quitting, because employees are not incentivised to do a better job than they were hired to do. But when a company pays individual employees more based on their performance, here comes this guy complaining about "salary disparity". I mean, he can't even seem to comprehend why people discussing their salaries leads to unhappy comparisons and disatisfactions. How often do you meet people who think they should be paid less, despite the fact that they're incompetent at their job? Populists are never consistent, because everything is just one more complaint to be made
@@AndorranStairway don’t ban the discussion of it because employees get upset. The employees don’t have to like the reasons, but banning it isn’t the solution. Salary differences are normal. Again they don’t have to like the answer to ‘why’ but they should be able to ask and talk.
Hey Josh (and Linus), I think a recent change in law, even makes it illegal for companies to retaliate if an employee talks about negative working conditions. I can't remember the exact details, I'll look for it and update here.
This is why I don't publicly praise anyone, you don't know how they are when the cameras are off or if they become a bad person in the future (people will dig into your past posts)
FYI Linus is in Canada and labor laws always trump anything in your employment contract. You are legit not allowed to sign labor law rights away and any part of a contract that has you do so is automatically null and void as it would never hold up in court should you chose to break it. One of those things is discussing pay. You can do what you what with your pay information. Your employer is the only party not allowed to discuss your pay with a third party with-out your permission.
Wages are always such a "touchy topic" and I have no idea why. I work in HR and by the nature of what I do, I will always know what everyone makes, from the Janitor to the CEO down to the cent. We don't discuss it with each other, but we all know.
9:27 you go from being pro-worker to anti-worker really fast haha. Like, dude. Have you heard of retaliation? There's a reason people do things anonymously.
I created a new database for a company I once worked for. As such, I had access to salaries. From the CEO on down. Had I posted the wages, all hell would have broken out. It is never a good idea to discuss wages. When a ten year employee is paid ten or more dollars an hour less than a new hire doing the same exact job, it does not end well.
GEEZ!!!! He's someone I had hoped would be better than that. But alas, MASK OFF MOMENT! Wage transparency is one of the few things employees HAVE that they can do. I'm in Canada and you can't stop me from talking about my income PERIOD.
In my experience the only employees that care to discuss wages are the employees that are paid less. This reddit post was very clearly made by an unhinged individual who FELT he deserved more but gives no reason as to why.
Although it's legal, I never talk about how much I make with fellow employees, freinds, or associates and quite frankly, I don't care what they're getting paid. I negotiated my salary and I am being paid a very competetive rate with a great job enviornment. If an employee ever asked me how much I make, I would politely tell him/her that's none of their business. For me, it's like asking what size underwear I have or how long my junk is. It's personal and not your business.
Linus has put his foot in his mouth multiple times over the past few years whenever the more business side of LTT came into discussion. Not surprised at all, just think back at the drama revolving him not wanting to give out warranties and shoddy customer support from a while back.
The three exemptions only exist because the jobs are so vital for society, the state and the capital owners want to prevent any organising efforts, be it unionising, striking or anything else and all of that often begins with discussing wages.
The writing has been on the wall with linus for years. If you actually ever watched his videos, you can see how blatantly abusive he is towards his employees and then he tries to play it off as “haha I’m funny, it was a joke” His fame has truly gone to his head, ffs his channel turned into his personal mtv cribs linus edition when he wanted to show off his new house after whining about needing to move because his old home address was public but here he goes filming his new house 🤦♂️
You seem to forget disconnect between real world and videos, we don't know what doesn't make it into the video, it might be friendly & happy place to work, don't judge based on your limited knowledge.
If the company won't let you discuss pay, then someone is getting paid less (and usually far less) than what there coworkers are getting paid. Find out if you're that person, and walk, by the end of the day. If you a person that they want to keep, you'll be called into the office for negotiations.
In just about every company someone is getting paid less than their co-workers are paid. That starts from the very beginning with salary negotiation, some people are just better at negotiating than others are. Then of course there is performance appraisal everyone's performance rating is going to be different so too will be their raises and bonuses year by year. So there's is no way everyone in a similar role is going to be paid the same.
But equal pay means employees have equal work experience. And we know everyone has different work experience. Would you pay someone who didn't graduate from Harvard the same salary as the other who graduated from Harvard?
@@Psygnosis in that case you wouldn't be doing the same role so then different pay is acceptable, if you are doing the same as someone that is then really you should be thinking about how you wasted that degree but that's just me.
Electricity in BC (where LMG is located) is quite cheap, and gas is more expensive compared to other provinces/states. So LMG employees owning a model 3 could be an economical choice. Like you said, no comparisons were made, but wages in Vancouver are considered low compared to other HCOL cities
My job sorta does this. They never outright ban it but prey on the fact that we have autism and many assume that ‘it’s not appropriate to share’ with ‘you may not ever share’. They use vague language to control workers but still have plausible deniability when it’s brought up
i feel like this guy is just disgruntled that he actually had to work at LMG. like he thought it was gonna be mostly hanging out and getting great pay for mostly hanging out.
Only point missing from this video is until recently his wife was the HR officer for complaints. That is a major conflict of interest as both Linus' partner and co owner of the company.
I like how you were fair in this video. When we talk about being treated fair as employees, many times we are seen as people who don't want to work. That is not true. We just want to be treated like actual humans rather than machines.
Hey @Joshua, Can I just make a few addendums to what you are saying here, Vancouver is hands down one of the most expensive places to rent currently, the wages are low and cost of living is extremely high. With living wages laws being under attack recently, a lot more people are inflamed about current living conditions. Add the fact that Vancouver and Toronto are basically the two major cities with jobs related to similar industries with any growth opportunities, the idea of them being able to move out is extremely reductive. He is a disgruntled employee but he has every right to be. Tor currently labor market is screwing folks to the max
I will never forget the time I was a new ski instructor at a local place when wages came up. At the start of the season, people were discussing their tips as if it was the right thing to do, so when asked I just commented what I got to surprises, since i made a decent amount in tips that day. When our first paycheck or so came around, I asked a couple of people what they got, and they shrugged it off. Finally one girl goes "It's rude to ask people what they make" and another guy looked at me and said "yeah I thought it was inappropriate at first but didn't say anything...." Yet they were okay discussing tips a few weeks prior... I basically didn't say anything, because I didn't want to have to deal with a bunch of people arguing that I was an awful person, but I wanted to mention about the tips. Some people are weird.... Sadly, the only reason I even asked about what they made, was because I was trying to be friendly since that's what people were doing a few weeks prior, and since I was the new guy, I was just trying to fit in as the new guy, and since they already did it, I figured that's what people do, discuss their tips/earning to basically either be happy for each other, or just try and see if they are better than each other. Now that i think about it, there was only 1 instance of tip asking, so it wasn't the norm. I just thought it was.
Linus is the real life example of the quote: "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain". This is in context with how his last boss at NCIX had a bad corporate attitude towards him.
Never go through the trouble of asking your Employer to give you a proper raise, just apply for a different Job and move on. Your Employer would rather pay a higher wage to a new Employee than to give their existing Employees a proper raise.
Good video. Just FYI, dental and eye care is not included in our health system (OHIP for me in Ontario). So depending on your situation those are incentives to stay at a bad company in Canada.
The only reason ive moved up majorly in my life pay wise is because i asked everyone around me what they were getting paid, i then compaired my output and skill vr theirs and realized the pay i was completely content with was less for no apparent reason then others around me, i would then go confront the company, Get a raise and in some cases 2 or 3 within a few months, and im talking 20% in hourly increase, which then made me realize how much i was actually making this company and how much i was actually worth, i since left those companies and founded my own company in the same trade and make 10x what i was making working for them, so yes i understand why LMG wants to avoid this, and it shouldnt be an issue if hes paying the employees what there worth
With the recent revelations from a former LTT employee explaining how she moved from the US to Canada and on work visa, there might be some truth to the feeling of being trapped.
Last year, I worked for a company that had a clause that prohibited contractors from disclosing their wages. This raised a red flag for me because it implies that they underpay a large number of employees and don't want them to find out. The job was stressful, toxic, disorganized, and full of micromanagers. I only lasted three months at the job before my mental sanity returned to normal.
I have a feeling not everyone will watch the entire video and actually understand the nuances that Josh makes here and instead assume everything just based on the title and the first few seconds
I've noticed Linus becoming more and more greedy as time has progressed. You should have seen the warranty drama with his backpack, where he refused to provide any kind of actual warranty except for "trust me bro".
Yeah you completely misread the room on that one, many people did. Did you actually watch that WAN show? Because it felt an awful lot like people just got bits of info out of context and made a mountain out of a mole hill. He SHOULD have had a written warranty, true, but he also corrected that pretty rapidly. The whole point was "What good is a warranty if the company chooses not to back it or goes out of business etc?". Basically saying all warranties are just a form of Trust, written or otherwise. It is fair to agree or disagree with the statement but there was NEVER an inkling for even a moment that he wasn't backing his product or trying to just sucker people out of money. So the "more greedy" comment just makes zero sense.
the dude shills his 70 dollar made in China screwdriver and says you're an idiot if you don't buy it from him..... he also is just a "WOW I DID 'x' Forced meme with semi-false clickbait titles sometimes. What's more interesting than him scamming employees is the fact he got popular to begin with, the dude's not fun to watch.
@@escapetherace1943 How sad your life must be to just make up shit that he "said". If you don't like it, that is fair, don't watch it. Why make BS up though? He has literally mentioned other drivers that would be good for specific types of work but claims his is tailored to PC building. If you think it is too much, don't buy it. It is far from the most expensive option on the market though.
@@ReivecS stay salty my dude, his attitude around his stupid screwdriver is borderline passive aggressive but cutesy jokey. It is just a screwdriver. I don't know how you tailor it to pc building (I'm laughing right now) because I've build pcs with thumb drivers and random screwdrivers and never had any issues? You think maybe he'd manufacture them in Canada and at least make a job or two in his own country for that price but nah. You got ripped off, I hope that 70 dollar screwdriver was worth it 🤣
Joshua, I've been watching for years and occasionally take issue with your bias and negative takes , but this is very well-balanced and fair. Good work.
He’s pretty good at maintaining the lovable geek facade, but when the criticism has ramped up in the past, Linus has let his mask slip a few times and it’s very humanizing to see his true ruthless businessman persona come out to play.
I am in the middle of the road when it comes to pay discussion. I get it from the concept of pay equity for different genders/races. But at the same time some pay differences may be related to performance or other factors and not everyone takes that very well.
Well I have been to both sides as an Employer as well as an employee, For some it's very easy just the right circumstances. We can only hope it could be that easy for everyone. One of the examples I would like to give is when I was an employer (had startups) I thought of a salary for my first intern. I have tried my best to maintain that but, in my local area the clients were not paying enough, so sometimes I had to pay out of my pocket to pay him (and i was not taking the salary). But I was only able to sustain 8 months. Along with other reasons I had to shut down the startups and had to layoffs that intern. And as from the employee side, i think it does not do any harm if it says to prohibit talking about salary among coworkers. People are still going to discuss it, but it prevents people from saying point like "i want a raise because my colleague has"
I check-in from time to time just to feel good knowing that Josh is ok, and not letting other people's actions ruin his life, because he is cool, and I like him :D. But man he just never fucking dissapoint does he... 10 minutes in and he's already thinking critically and coming in from all angles just to be fair, and still- naturally end up being one of the people that has "pointed something out way back before everyone else realized it was a problem"...What a man..
I really appreciate that you didn’t go full one side in this situation. Linus has a history of doing some weird shady business stuff but also has a history of doing some really really good things for his employees. Just because he’s imperfect doesn’t mean he’s actively evil, and it’s good to see nuance on the internet sometimes :D
American here. I have no problem with people wanting to associate in unions, but I do have a problem with the government enforcement of unions. I also have a problem with union workers looking down on me AND shaming me at times for not wanting to be in a union. This is my experience, as I'd rather argue for myself and in MY opinion I work harder and smarter than others. Unions aren't benevolent, and they have a lot of shadyness. Corporations aren't benevolent either, and they deserve each other. I just want to put my opinion out because I hate when a bunch of union people act like they're better than everyone else. Not everyone wants to be a part of a union.
Which I don't get is, that their fluctuation is actually pretty low and there are plenty employees looking at 8+ years. Plus full fetched engineers coming in too, which know very well what they are worth. Plus they have two employees who used to work at the office and are now fully remotely. Jake and Dennis were able to buy a house after working there, Dennis even after four months of working there. And that was before Dennis became a parttime host, he was "just" an editor at that time and the company was much, much smaller back then. It is a media company so they are definitely squeezing some.people, no doubt about that. It just does not make sense that this person is composing those lines, while others appear to stick to the company for above average time spans. Hope it makes sense what I am saying. I too doubt that Linus or Yvonne would ever follow up if somebody talked about their wage, especially when the outcry after. That would be much, much louder. Pretty sure they hired a lawyer to compose these contracts and they were standard issue for the region the company is based at.
@@robred123s Of course. But what use would that have at all? I mean, Linus can say one thing and if there is no backing from employees, he may almost be lying. But there are surely many employees who would back what Linus says and definitely not because they are scared of him. And what just popped into my head too: You know what you are being paid BEFORE you sign the contract. If the pay is well below what the average of that region is, why sign the contract in the first place? Go elsewhere. It literally is as easy as that.
I think the reason he's complaining about the writers pay is because Linus says how they can afford all those things like expensive cars, houses and they can't. He's proving him wrong.
Another thing in Canada is that it is provincially regulated vs federally regulated employees. There are different rules for both and some stat holidays. I find more shady and potential law breaking happens at the provincially regulated workplaces as they tend to be the small to medium workplaces and get away with it. Federally regulated is medium to large and is more regularly monitored. Now to be fair, I live in a province where the provincial government likes to be "we hate Ottawa" (Canada's capital and where the Federal Parliament is) but I don't like the current party in Alberta.
rachel notley lol really dude lol. FYI Alberta is the highest paying province with lowest unemployment, along with the top for Education and Healthcare.

The only party I can't vote for is the Quebec bloc but I would never vote for them anyways. I'm allowed to say that I don't like the UCP the same way you're allowed to say you like them. I don't agree with how smith won and I don't like how the conservative party of Alberta lost their power when the NDP won and instead of looking into why they lost historically and improving, they just used the NDP win to merge wildrose and conservative party together into the UCP and took over into what we have now. So, I fully respect your support of UCP but all I ask in return is the same respect of not agreeing with them. We don't need to be politically polarized to have a meaningful conversation.
This whole video was not only made out of pure ignorance (from a youtuber who doesnt know anything about running a business) and intellectual dishonesty. 1:49: "to maintain salary disparities, that's not good". Actually, it is good, assuming you subscribe to the idea of paying people according to what they contribute. It is undeniable that different people have different level of competencies, despite having the same job. This is why pretty much every company in the world provides increments based on performances. 1:52 "to protect trade secrets, what trade secrets?" Conveniently glossing over the part about company's financial performance or business strategy. 2:00: "Why would that create tension and conflict?" Uhh, because people always think they're entitled to more than others? It's a documented psychological phenomenon known as overclaiming. This is all extremely standard stuff, and even the consensus on REDDIT of all places agrees. Honestly embarrassing listening to this deeply misinformed video
This is my favorite video of yours. Not because I agree with any specific points, but because it’s generally in contrast to many of your other videos politically. It gives you a lot of credibility. Well researched. Keep it up.
"Hi I'm Linus Tech Tips. But before we talk about anything, we have to thank our sponsor, Blue Chew or something." 3 Minutes later...blah blah blah. Last three minutes of the video "We like to thank another sponsor for this video, something not related to the content. Oh and buy our Merch..."
You can't legally require employees to not talk about pay it's a violation of federal labor law. If an employer told me I couldn't talk about pay as it affects morale then asks me to sign a form saying I understand the policy I copy it and send it to the department of labor and wait for that nice juicy violation to come in the mail (has happened to me 3x in my lifetime now)
Literally was just speaking to some gamers (on a CSGO skin maker pay revealed video or something), on how toxic it is for people to hide their wages/act like they need to pull up the ladder behind em. Sad to hear Linus takes part in it.
Obviously linus shows you how to block ads, he's a tech tips youtuber. He's also showed you how to do many other things that would essentially mean you no longer need to watch him, because he realizes as a tech youtuber he has to cover ALL important tech. Including ad blockers
Making wages opaque might be due to the fact that the remuneration of certain positions are largely negotiated which would indeed show a pretty wide difference is salary. Ensuring peoples wages are kept private could alleviate the unfairness someone might feel learning about a colleague's higher wage without factoring in the context for why that person might be able to command a higher wage than you.
Im a bit torn here. As an LMG fan, I see Linus' perspective. But as an employee who's been burned and taken advantage of in the past, I see the resentment in the post. Honestly this is my pholosophy, you cant change an employer no matter how hard you try. So just take your work experience and put it on a resume, and move on. It sends a message to the company and gives you peace of mind.
There are arguments both for and against disclosing wages, but one thing for certain is that the truth always gets out in some form or another. Once people figure out the kind of lifestyle you live, where you worked before, etc.; they can figure out how much you make. All through casual conversations. It's just how people are.
Years ago the company I worked for accidently made everyone's income information public to any one in the company and one office of supervisors were all gathered around looking at the information and sharing it. I believe one of the supervisors was fired. I personally think it's a bad idea to talk to most coworkers about your pay, because of the pettiness I see in the work place. Too many people want to compare others to the high standard they have of themselves in their own mind.
So he complains about the low pay and high effort, but then says 40hrs + 15min is strongly discouraged? Usually the slave drivers make you salaried and expect 60hrs for 40hrs of pay. Having an extra 5min here and there isn't really the end of the world.
I think Linus is towing the line between startup and "this is actually corporate now". As a business owner, that is expanding rapidly, I kind of feel for him. Lmg is massively expanding and Linus might not be able to run things as he used to. At least he tries to have ethics. 😅

I tried to be as objective and reasonable as possible.
WHY LINUS. Feelsbadman.jpg
EDIT - Wall of Text for "WHY YOU SIMPING FOR LINUS?!"
I'm not a super fan of Linus, and I never really had a formalized opinion of him.
Think about it for second with me-
Imagine if I made these claims? The audience probably would say 'well josh is dumb...you can't be like "WORK REMOTE?! FORGET IT!' .. because you still get 2 days of remote?'
Imagine if I accused someone of wage theft like essentially like this post did without any evidence? The audience would say 'RIP JOSH HOPE YOU HAVE PROOF'
Imagine if I said 'THIS COMPANY MAKES YOU ENTER TIME IN GOOGLE SPREAD SHEETS!'
The audience would probably say 'Yeah Josh, well imagine bud, companies are different, and that's what they chose to do there bud'.
Kinda what it seems to me
Seriously, just watch some of his videos Joshua and pay close attention to how abusive he is on camera
@@remysavary689 I've linked the page with wages here: imgbb.com/Qcz2phW
It seemed like a general employee handbook to me, and that's also the way it was framed on reddit as well.
You seemed very neutral to me. Good job!

It's almost 100% this, LMG grew super fast, I doubt Linus sat down and wrote this handbook himself
I've learned the hard way that these smaller media companies rely on repuation and "cool factor" to attract employees and pay them less.
The cool factor is crap
Cool factor or they will say they are a "progressive" company, or we are all family here. If you hear that during an interview, just nope out of it. Wish someone had told me that when I was in my 20s.
I call it "the Disney effect"
I got laid off for the 3rd time since covid. The fact a company wont take a 10% loss in a year and know they will make it back in the next year or so and just wnat to make it back immediately by ruining lives is beyond me. AND THEN they complain about quiet quitting and loyalty.
The upside is, you managed to find 3 jobs recently. That's more than most people can do.
after a year or two working for a company, find another job that pays more.
Then boomers talk about how "the young people dont want to work" as if
1) They have any idea what its like to look for work in the 2020s (or even the last decade)
2) No one wants to apply for job that they think will go away on a whim because the economy has been destroyed by COVID culture and other terrible political decisions.

@Joshua Fluke then why even make videos complaining about half the things you do if it's pointless?

FYI Linus is in Canada and labor laws always trump anything in your employment contract. You are legit not allowed to sign labor law rights away and any part of a contract that has you do so is automatically null and void as it would never hold up in court should you chose to break it. One of those things is discussing pay. You can do what you what with your pay information. Your employer is the only party not allowed to discuss your pay with a third party with-out your permission.
I think your video will become very popular very soon. After what i heard as of August /16 /2023. You should make a new one :)

In my experience the only employees that care to discuss wages are the employees that are paid less. This reddit post was very clearly made by an unhinged individual who FELT he deserved more but gives no reason as to why.
I mean the wage thing is litteraly the only decent argument made against Linus in the video so I'd say it's not too bad
@Jet4455 even then discussing wage could be argued to be a negative for the growth of the company
So how much you make? XD

You not have equal pay laws?
In just about every company someone is getting paid less than their co-workers are paid. That starts from the very beginning with salary negotiation, some people are just better at negotiating than others are. Then of course there is performance appraisal everyone's performance rating is going to be different so too will be their raises and bonuses year by year. So there's is no way everyone in a similar role is going to be paid the same.

Hey @Joshua,
Can I just make a few addendums to what you are saying here,
Vancouver is hands down one of the most expensive places to rent currently, the wages are low and cost of living is extremely high.
Sounds like there are too many "tech workers" and therefore their pay does not need to be high to attract them and keep them.
I was flabbergasted when Linus said that on the WAN show. That's when I truly realized that he had evolved into a full blown corporate overlord.
Finally one girl goes "It's rude to ask people what they make" and another guy looked at me and said "yeah I thought it was inappropriate at first but didn't say anything...."
Yet they were okay discussing tips a few weeks prior...
My company has the same clause in its' handbook - whether they would enforce the penalty is something that has (to my knowledge) never been tested
Linus is the real life example of the quote: "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain".
This is in context with how his last boss at NCIX had a bad corporate attitude towards him.

The shirt too was like this is tone def
Good work.
I mean this is the guy that said using adblock is piracy. Linus has shown himself to be a cutthroat boss.
I block ads pretty aggressively but I know that without ads we wouldn't have a platform like youtube to hold all the videos to watch
He’s pretty good at maintaining the lovable geek facade, but when the criticism has ramped up in the past, Linus has let his mask slip a few times and it’s very humanizing to see his true ruthless businessman persona come out to play.
and the same time make video how to use adblock with RasPi
I am in the middle of the road when it comes to pay discussion. I get it from the concept of pay equity for different genders/races. But at the same time some pay differences may be related to performance or other factors and not everyone takes that very well.
Lotta commenters here didn’t make it past the title before dropping their thoughts here lmao.
Well I have been to both sides as an Employer as well as an employee,
For some it's very easy just the right circumstances.
People are still going to discuss it, but it prevents people from saying point like "i want a raise because my colleague has"
Imagine how different things would be if employers had to show all employee wages as public information..
He's gotten big enough that there are now people that want to see anything Linus does in a negative light.
We need to have a Joshua ft. Linus video
I'm with Josh on this one and most things he says. I can relate to him, I've been there, I'm still there, and know what it feels like.
@@TRONiX404 i never said I liked Notley once in my comment. I said I don't like the UCP. There are other parties in Alberta then just the UCP and NDP. There are actually half a dozen or so in Alberta.
@@thebtm and all Federal lap dog's.
The UCP made this province what it is, Clearly u haven't lived in any other province.
Also leaders in green energy development.
@@TRONiX404 lived in Ontario (born), Newfoundland, Saskatchewan, Alberta. And I've visited all provinces except PEI. I have family and friends in Nova Scotia and British Columbia. I learned politics in ON, SK, AB. I don't understand why I have to pick a side like a sports team and not do my research and pick accordingly. I've voted for Liberals, NDP and Conservative federally.
Feels like a lot of people did not watch the whole Video before leaving a comment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I appreciate the balance on both sides, Keep it up Josh
This is my favorite video of yours. Not because I agree with any specific points, but because it’s generally in contrast to many of your other videos politically.
It gives you a lot of credibility. Well researched. Keep it up.
Once Linus started talking about dental plans I couldn't stop thinking about how Lisa needs braces.
Looking at the comments, so many people just read the title and didn't even watch the video.
"Hi I'm Linus Tech Tips. But before we talk about anything, we have to thank our sponsor, Blue Chew or something." 3 Minutes later...blah blah blah. Last three minutes of the video "We like to thank another sponsor for this video, something not related to the content. Oh and buy our Merch..."
please do a follow up given the recent events!
You can't legally require employees to not talk about pay it's a violation of federal labor law. If an employer told me I couldn't talk about pay as it affects morale then asks me to sign a form saying I understand the policy I copy it and send it to the department of labor and wait for that nice juicy violation to come in the mail (has happened to me 3x in my lifetime now)
That's not true in all of Canada.
Weird obsession with ad-blockers. You do know there's other add-ons to help block ads and skip them?
Imagine if it's some sort of prank by Dennis for channel super fun lol 😂
Fans will still joke about it when it’s nothing to joke about and a bad practice
Stop licking boots damn
You do not unionize a startup, or even a fast growing SME. What sort of horrible suggestion is that
