I had the larger cosmetic bag sent to me a few days ago and did the same thing you were doing and it was very difficult, I ended up by chance using some nails that were in a kit of picture hanging supplies that are brass to try and stretch open the hole, And then I just use that instead of the rod and it looked perfect and then I trimmed the end of it was some wire cutters. I struggled so hard with that rod that comes with that D ring.. I hunted and hunted to find D rings with smaller rods than 3 mm but I could not find any. it works looks good.
I did the same thing with the larger cosmetic case I had to use a brass nail from picture hanging kit instead of the rods the rods were too difficult. But the colors match the nails had heads on them and were gold and easier to deal with
You just could’ve bought a little Gucci handbag like that. It probably would be a little bit bigger but you have room to put your cell phone too much trouble when you could just buy a little bag. Gucci does have them so little bit bigger.

It was so hard. My Husband cut his fingers a few times trying to push it through and create a hole.

Agree, it was the smallness of the bag as much as the conversion that appealed to me at that time.
