    The more I listen to this unit, the only way I can describe it is having a completely intuitive sound. It's like it just works in a natural way and the release time compliments almost anything you put through it.

    It's amazing. I have it on my Apollo twin console. Just remember you don't always need compression. For example, distorted electric guitar - the amp speakers act as a compressor, outputting constant volume. Specifically rhythm guitar. 🎸

  • @deanroddey2881
    @deanroddey2881 ปีที่แล้ว

    There were some questions asked and the answers sometimes never said what was implied... For opto compressors like this, the release time depends on how much compression, because it depends on the saturation of the opto sensor. As it gets more saturated, as you drive it harder, it takes more time to let that energy drain away and release again. So gain reduction and release time are tied together.

  • @AyoToine
    @AyoToine 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    It adds thickness but spreads it evenly over the whole signal instead of in th bass area like cheaper compressors or levelers...i like it better on instruments though and on final mixes stems or stereo tracks.

    • @suebillina
      @suebillina 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Antoine Yetts You can always compensate for bass reponse using an eq'd side chain. As a historical aside: in broadcast situations, older compressors (predating the LA2A) would have been of the Vari mu type, and would have had pre-emphasis (high boost) added to the signal before compression. My guess is that the more balanced response of the LA2A is, at least in part, due to the natural (optical) characteristic of the T4B optical attenuator.

      Hi Kevin Lee, when compressing the sound a lot and diving the unit, any noise that is quietly in the vocal will be brought up. The unit does have a small amount of self noise when pushed very hard too. It's probably a combination of both :)

    I've been trying to talk myself into buying a Distressor instead of splurging on this but I'm having a hard time... the LA-2A just has mojo to it that no other compressor has. Call it fuzz or warmth or hair or whatever... it just adds something to everything that passes through it that makes it sound better and I'm not even talking about the compression which is smooth as butter (use Barbara Striesand voice there). Bruce Swedien hardly used compression but when he did, it was this so... `nuff said.

    This appears to be an early version, with no compressor/limiter switch. Am I correct? Therefore, this LA-2A would simply be a limiter only, as, like you said, it was a "levelling amplifier" intended for radio broadcast usage.

      67Stu,,,It still compresses the signal,,when you control what goes in and what comes out separately,,common sense tells you that if more goes in than comes out, youre compressing the signal,,therefore its a compressor,,, Jeeez!

    • @67Stu
      @67Stu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeeeez? Correction: it's still a limiter, as the ratio is fixed is way more than 10:1; actually, since the ratio is 100:1 in limit mode, it's a "brick-wall" limiter. The amount of peak reduction applied does effect the amount of compression in terms of decibels, not ratio. The question here is, what is the ratio setting on the original incarnation of the LA-2? Whatever the version, it's still an amazing compressor/limiter, and no studio should be without one (or two, or three).

  • @RonnieDean60

    I have been using this unit for years in great studios all over the US and all the best studios in the nation have one. Of course, anyone born into digital might argue the point but even the digital plug-ins for this unit don't compare to the actual unit itself. Of course, if you have never experienced it in person, I would suggest trying one someday and compare natural tube white noise compression to fatten sound, over digital. I believe that digital has it's place and the ones who operate it successfully make their own arguments and I personally have experienced both sides many times but I still lean towards tube technology for my own projects. Most all the plug in's that are made for digital are trying to emulate tube sound. RD

    It's subtle but you can hear a difference now is it worth a 2k difference... well lets see what warm audio has to say about that.

    To my ears I hear that the LA-2A makes the signal just really sweet and musical. It adds some thickness but not alot IMO.
    I believe the Tube Tech CL1B adds more thickness than an LA-2A but it doesnt add the sweet subtle tone and musicality that the LA-2A does.

      +AdonisAiolos yeah i agree i think it adds thickness but spreads it evenly over the whole signal instead of in the bass area like cheaper compressors or levelers..

      +AdonisAiolos As a studio technician and a man who has been repairing stuff like this professionally for a good 17 years, I'll have to disappoint you a bit. You are adding a hell of a lot of mumbo jumbo there, and classic _audio myth folklore_ that you'll hear everywhere from internet forums to enthusiastic novice producers, just getting to know compressors and gear like this.
      All it adds, is apparent level, my friend. There is no cream or warmth, only cream you see is in the beautiful simplistic vintage design of the machine. That's the "cream" you hear.
      Just stop adding all of these apparent mythical changes to the sound. Cos' I know it's bullshit, as a man who has worked with compressors from the cheapest to the most prestigious. It's a very simple design, the components are quite expensive, because of the way they're designed and the fact that they're discreet. And the fact that it has become a _classic_ and a _Brand_ exactly due to people like you, who buy folklore like this very easily.
      It's an inside joke among technicians... Oh, you poor guys. Spending 2g's on shit like this. Oh well... Good that someone's getting paid!
      Ps. A million dollar question to you, "Adonis". Could you elaborate a bit, on the "musicality" as you put it, that compressor apparently adds. What is it, if I may inquire in a more technical sense? How would you define it? ; )
      * getting the popcorn *

      +ANPHKI I work with things too, but disagree. You could say the same for anything in life. That's way too general. Audio electronics is an art and the experience of the piece is subjective and should be honored that way.

      +ANPHKI Very much agreed. The LA2A is not magic. It's a compressor/limiter pure and simple. It does not imbue the signal with mystical redistributed/resynthesized frequency content as some people seem to suggest.. Sure, it may distort if you make it work hard, but most engineers I know, appreciate it for what it does - ie manage dynamics in a way that generally benefits the music. Great on bass and vocals (imo)

      suebillina If it's just another compressor, then why do so many engineers pay more for it and make a cult following around it? I'm not saying it truly is a mystical wonder, but I don't think smart people with good ears just recommend it for its looks.

    Would have been much better to have a better bass recording (that isn't clicking and popping) to run through this thing.

    It's pretty slow tho. Trying my best to like it. Ive really only liked examples of it on dialogue. This is all in comparison to 1176

    That recording was in dire need of a pop filter. It sounds awful each and every times he utters "p". The LA-2A sounds very full and warm, though.
