When students study film and character development, this movie should be in the lesson. One of the most character development driven films I can remember
I’m so glad you loved it man!! I reviewed it on my channel after I saw it at TIFF this year, and it’s also one of my absolute favorites of the year. I agree with you about the other characters exiting the film being a nitpick of mine as well. Can’t wait to see this in theaters again tomorrow!!
@@MovieFiles Oh, 100%. I think it’s a top 5 contender, and all three leads are deserving of an acting nomination. I’m pretty sure Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph have it in the bag at this point. Very big possibility that Payne gets the Director nomination and this wins screenplay as well!
I love this movie! The cast were great, I loved the characters and their dynamics. Paul Giamatti should honestly be considered at the Oscars as well as Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Its a heart warming modern day Christmas classic that I intend on watching for many more years to come. Great review! Keep making awesome content 👍
Yesss!!! Loved this film! Giamatti was incredible as always and yes deserves the nomination for this. Da’Vine Joy Randolph was FANTASTIC and she deserves one too! That kitchen scene KILLED me 😢 Loved how if you didn’t know these actors, you could have assumed this film was literally from the late 60s/early 70s. You are so right, they don’t make films like this anymore. Great film and great review!! 🤗🎥🥂
Absolutely love this film. It will make you laugh and cry. The cast was wonderful! Da'vine Joy Randolph deserved all the awrds she won. Love her on Only murders in the building. Paul was great too.
My girlfriend & I will be leaving to see it this afternoon. Thanks for the review. There's going to be some serious competition at The Oscars this year. It's been an epic time for big movies like Oppenheimer, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon & others. I can't wait to see Poor Things. I bet that movie is going to be a trip.
Just saw it. Great movie. If I had any nitpick it would be involving the girl at the party. The script had her making an overt move, so to speak, on Angus just a little too quick to be believable. I mean, it's not like the guy is Brad Pitt. OTOH, if I was him it would be just fine with me. Plus, the story just let that situation end. In reality, he would have been obsessed with wanting to get back with her. --Whatever.
Just saw it, and definitely a fav! Loved the acting all around and attention to detail for the period. But, I thought the pacing was slow, which you addressed, and had some deadends like inrodcuing the at potenital love interest for Paul, but went nowhere. At the end, I was thinking he should just stay with her! I found your review from Rotten Tomatoes for what it's worth.
Now where have I seen this before? Three strangers with nothing in common will be thrown together, cheer each other up, find peace and friendship for a moment before going their separate ways. All three will still have the same problems to return to, and none will become a better person from the experience. The above is the story from 1973's The Last Detail starring Jack Nicholson. Its also the story for 2023's The Holdovers. Plus there are many other parallels, too many to list in a comment section paragraph. Suffice to say, for me anyway, The Holdovers is the Christmas version of The Last Detail and you know what? I enjoyed it all the same, both excellent character driven stories that feel like a real slice of life.
