My first journey to Chiang Mai from Bangkok by bus was in 1978. It was fun as the crowds of tourists had not started going there yet and most people had not even heard of Chiang Mai!
I stayed at the Prince hotel in Tai Wang Road. It was owned by Punjabis and was the best hotel in Chiang Mai those days. I was a regular traveller there and became a close friend of the hotel owners. The grandson is running it now. Many new luxury hotels have been built since and the city has developed and become modern beyond the first charming ancient city that it still was when I first saw it. Going again soon.🎉
In front of your hotel is not a canal but a moat which surrounds the wall of the fort which protected the old city.
