Sent the Amani Foundation a first aid kit from their wish list. (Proof that I actually watch these videos and pay attention.). Hope they find it useful.

Good to see focus on a proper first aid kit. Just an observation from my experiences with bloody mishaps while kayaking: All those band-aids and gauze pads are useless in wet and muddy conditions without something to hold them in place. Myself, I would double up on the waterproof adhesive tape. And if that fails to hold, use an ace bandage with the clips on top of that. I also toss in a small pak towel to dry the area if necessary.

The NOLS wound packs that I had multiples of include a waterproof piece that works amazingly in wet conditions.

How about recommendations of what to include in a basic first aid kid for those of us with little or no training. I’ve taken several “first aid” courses, but none of them are adequate for back country emergencies. Most of us carry some kind of commercial first aid kit in our day pack that is small and light. Can you help with suggestions that would be appropriate and small enough for most of us to carry.

I have an entire playlist on how I do first aid kits, both big and small. The problem is there is no "one way" or "set list" because there are so many options, I may prefer to carry things you may not like.
For example, in this kit I have a bunch of band aids and someone already said "oh, in a wet environment, those won't work...get yourself X" to which I replied that I have special bandages that work in wet conditions. SO if I said "THIS IS WHAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR FIRST AID KIT!" I would get a ton of kick back, and they would be right. In general I would say, do you have a way to stop bleeding? do you have a way to deal with blisters? do you have a way to immobilize a joint? Do you have a way to help manage pain?.... there are three or four ways to do each of those things. But as I am typing it... that might make a good video, showing all the ways..... thanks for the idea.

Pretty sure that is an adventure medical kits. Full disclosure I have paid for very few kits! They tend to get abandoned by organizations I work for. I don’t love that kit, but it was free

@@AdventureOtaku Thanks so much. Do you know what size it is? They have a Mountain series with several sizes based on # of people and duration of trip.

You keep saying that kit is going in the van... does it go in your boat as well? or just the van?
Why no tourniquet? No eye wash? No emergency sunglasses? I keep a pair the doctor sends you home wearing after he dilates your eyes, they fold flat, and weigh nothing. No ointments? triple antibiotics? Tylenol? Aspirin? Benadryl? No ice pack compresses? Salt / electrolyte tablets?
If your after burn cream expired in '17, I think you should replace the batteries in the finger pulse monitor.

It goes in the boat too, hence the dry bag. When it isn't in the boat, it lives in the van in case I need it.
This isn't a video about what I pack, You need to watch my other first aid kit videos which explain why I Carry what I carry. No emergency sunglasses, because I rarely wear them. I have a pair of prescriptions... rarely wear em. OTC pain meds will be in my daily dry bag with Toothbrush and the like. Ice packs always "pre-activate" every one I have ever had in a kit, has activated in the kit and is useless. Triple antibiotic ointments don't do what you think - they keep wounds moist, they don't fight infection. No tourniquet. I have worked thousands of EMS calls and never needed one. Short of working with guns/chainsaws/powertools you probably don't need one. They can also be improvised. On big trips I will pack a med kit, I don't keep one constantly stocked because they expire. It is also pretty small. The batteries in the pulse ox were fine, And I check it twice a year. Eye wash wouldn't be a bad idea... Ive never carried it. But im not opposed to it. You can also rinse eyes with potable water.
Also keep in mind, Nols wilderness med, has access to all the data of every injury on a NOLS course going back to 1965. I base my kits on my experience both backcountry and front country, and what the data says represents common injuries. NOLS has never applied a TQ in the back country, and they have had students attacked by bears. Most of what I do is very data driven. That said, pack what works for you. Not what I pack - which is the point of my other videos (that discuss what I carry)
