Very useful review. Like a lot of others, I've been torn between getting the Artist 15.6 Pro and the Innovator 16. I'm leaning towards Innovator 16 and I *really* want to get it before the anniversary sale ends, but I don't have a job yet... Soon, maybe I will! Nice review! I prefer to draw in procreate over photoshop so I tend o use my iPad a lot. But for some reason, I love graphic tablet reviews lol. I do have a little Wacom Intuos that I use for my mouse and for some work if I don't want to use Sidecar.

I have the 15.6 pro and just recently purchased the smaller 13.3 version. Have a 24 inch Cintiq pro on my other computer. Though Im not going to lie, I love the design of the Innovator. XP Pen (also a Japanese company) is giving Wacom (another Japanese company) competition.... If only my XP Pen 15.6 pro came with that mascot souvenir. Also im digging those post-cards and stickers. Also noticed the pen on the Innovator 16 looks like the intuos pro gen 1. Looks really nice.

That’s awesome! I remember when I switched, it was like a whole new world opened up to me 😂. So, I think both are fantastic! As I said in the video, the major differences are that Innovator is slimmer, so easier to take with you if that’s what you want. Also, 5% better colours. And it has an extra wheel. I really like both) Since I used the Artist 15.6 Pro for like 8 month, it was definitely really comfy. The new one looks really good though :)) Your call! Let me know which one you end up getting and how you like it :)
there's a black friday sale right now and the innovator is the same price of a normal artist 15.6!!! i kinda like the chonky look of the 15.6 tho and the wheel looks more tactile..... does anyone know if the 15.6 is significantly heavier than the innovator?
neat! I've been using wacom intuos art for almost four years! I'm saving for a graphic tablet, I got my eyes on this one. Just a quick question, how's the performance? Ralph, that’s awesome that you are saving up for your dream! I use it with my 2015 laptop, so I think that super big and complex brushes do lag (but I feel like it’s the problem with laptop?). Otherwise, there was no heating up or anything like this. And I always have it plugged in and turned on. Hope that helps and good luck!

That’s a great question! Quality wise I’m not sure if the price difference justifies it 🤔 on the other hand it’s a new ver model so... I think it’s worth to think more what’s important to u. Sorry can’t give u an exact answer.

Pakinam, I use all the tablets I review for a short while and move on to the next, so can't say about long-term issues. But, I definitely would still recommend it! :)
Mmm good question! I think I’ve just always wanted to experience working with one :)) And this is a really good size display tablet, but I’m also used to working with large canvas for when I used to oil paint. And I feel that it would be more comfortable to use my entire shoulder for painting with a larger display. It’s not necessary though) hope that makes sense!

Anna,...how was the Lag? Did the lines and markings keep up with the stylus? Did You feel that the activation force was acceptable? I mean would it skip when you applied really light pressure or did the screen pick up the light lines well. Was the screen too slick or was there some decent friction to allow for a more paper-like feel? There have been reports that when using tilt near the edges of the screen that the tilt stops working about an inch away all the way around the screen's parameter. Did you experience this?
I think I'm sold. When you said that you stopped thinking about the tablet and pen and just focused on your art, that was it. The right tool for the job should let you focus on the job and not the tool. This was very helpful!
Anyone who has the tablet, how is the lag with light lines? I can't decide whether to get the innovator, because I hate any kinda slow/laggy lines and I don't want to find out it's a deal breaker, as returning the tablet would be an awful hassle. I'm deciding between Wacom cintiq 16 (non pro) and the innovator, and the anniversary price is great, but I like my pen strokes to be exact. I hate anything like line stabilization etc, and the lag sounds like it's got a similar feel to it.
I have been struggling with the same issue! I trust wacoms durability and quality but honestly it looks like xppen is catching up. I have heard the lag on you pen depends more on your computer (i have an intouse pro and when i do very large brushes it lags a little bit) but i heard with xppen if you do a super light brushstroke it has trouble registering it. I still dont know what to choose x.x
Thanks for the video, I currently own a Wacom Cintiq Pro 24 Creative Pen & Touch Display that I splurged on back in 2018 that I simply love. I have been looking at also buying a smaller more portable tablet when I am out and about. I had been looking at both the XP Pen Artist as well as this newer Innovator as well as the Huion tablets and will be purchasing one of these XP Pen tablets, probably this newer Innovator tablet as a result of your review video for the Innovator. Though you did not mention it in your review the reason I will be buying a tablet from XP Pen is because they provide Linux drivers. All of the Wacom tablets work out of the box on Linux because a group developed an open source driver years ago that is every bit as good as the official Wacom Windows drivers. I run a dual boot set up on all of my computers that has both Linux as well as Windows 10 installed. Lately I have been running Linux far more than Windows because all of the software I currently use were developed for Linux before they were ported to the other OS's. For art I use Krita, GIMP and Ink Scape, for 3D art I use Blender For music and video editing I use Bit Wig Studio and DaVinci Resolve 17, both of these programs are proprietary but the developers have versions that run natively on Linux. I just purchased the Innovator on Amazon.com (US site), the normal price is $499 but at the moment (01/06.2021) there is a 100 dollar off coupon that brings the cost down to $399. I also purchased the non Anniversary edition because they wanted $50 for all of the extra stuff like the ball point pen, postcards etc and for me that was just not worth $50 plus the coupon was not available on the Anniversary edition.
I like the tablet but I wish that it had a touch interface but I knew that it did not before purchasing the tablet. The drivers were easy to install and the tablet worked as soon as it was plugged in. There are a couple of things that are not up to snuff, I mainly use the tablet with Corel Painter 12, and the tilt function dose not work very well, I am not sure if it is Painter or the tablet so I will have to try it with some different software. Also out of the box my tablets color was not right, it was ok but not great. I have a display calibrator that I used to crate a custom profile for the tablet that resolved that issue. I think that XP Pen needs to do a better job in this area. Even with these 2 issues I am not sorry I purchased it but I am considering buying the 16” Wacom tablet even though it costs about $200 more mainly because I own several different Wacom pens that will work with it and I miss not being able to use them. Along with the pen that came with my 24” pen display I also have their air brush pen and their art pen that along with supporting the tilt function it also supports rotation. Having rotation is great when painting using a fan brush, it really simulates using a fan brush in natural media like oils when you rotate the brush in your fingers. With that being said I would still highly recommend the XP Pen tablets because they are a lot less expensive that Wacom. My 24” tablet was expensive and cost $2500, it does have a 4K touch display that at the moment no one else has.

Hey there)) well, both have their upsides and downsides, (including Wacom). But overall, whichever one you go with, as long as it allows you to use it without thinking too much - you've made a good choice. And I felt like that with the both brands I've reviewed. Did you end up making a choice yet?

Im getting this for my birthday/Christmas!!! *my first ever display tablet! I had a huion 640p for awhile and it worked great. But it’s a bit hard to draw without a screen on the tablet. (My birthday is on dec 10, so they either give me my huge gifts on my birthday or Christmas since they’re so close.)
Yes, absolutely! The tablet works as a separate monitor, therefore to use it, it's necessary to have a computer where you host the drawing software and all of the files. Hope this answers your question :)

Hi sorry for all the questions 😂 I got my innovator 16, and I followed the tutorial on youtube from their channel on how to set it up with my MacBook. I did all the steps, but it only shows my desktop with my top bar of the screen and my wallpaper, nothing else. I can click stuff on my computer by placing my pen on the tablet, but my applications don't show up on my tablet. I was wondering if you could tell me what to do (it's fine if you can't, you've already helped me a lot)! Thank you!
Juliette Blueriver that’s a great question! It’s actually pretty easy, you have to go to the tablet settings where you adjust hotkeys, and change the monitor settings from your laptop to the tablet. I hope that makes sense! And then your pen will move the mouse on your tablet, not your laptop. Also, it’s like a different screen, so nothing will show up until you drag an application to the tablet. I hope that was helpful! And I’m so excited for you, have fun 🥳

Does anyone know why the xp pen store doesn't ship to a lot of countries in Europe? I live in the Netherlands and wasn't too surprised it didn't ship too my country, considering how tiny it is. But then I saw it didn't ship to Germany and France and then I got a bit confused.
Moeru X that’s a really good question. I think that if it is your goal/dream to be good at digital art, then yea, it’s definitely worth the investment! :) if it’s just a hobby that you do 1-2 times in a few months than maybe it’s not really worth it. But then again, it’s just my opinion :)

Does the thinner, metal build of the Innovator 16 make it seem more fragile? I currently have the 15.6 Pro and feel like I could drop it and it would be fine, whereas I'd be worried if I dropped the Innovator it would break or chip.
It definitely feels more fragile, because it's so thin, but I don't think it is! The quality of the build is great, and they did want to make sure artists are able to travel with it so they made it more sturdy. I never dropped it but I'm not too scared to))
Hey, I have this tablet and sometimes the pen point isn't accurate to where I'm pointing on the screen. It's sometimes off by a few centimeters. I usually have to restart my laptop, mess around with the PenTablet screen settings, and open my drawing software (Krita) again to fix the problem. Is my tablet bugged or is there a way to fix this?
Juliette , that’s a great question! Actually, you would need to get a special adaptor that has a USB and HDMI ports. I’m actually getting a new MacBook and just ordered the adaptors. It’s a bit pricey but totally worth it! Hope this helps :)

Juliette, think of it as an iPad that you got, except it has to be connected to your laptop/computer... Or like an external monitor that you connect. So, it doesn’t actually hold anything but what’s shown from your laptop. So, yes, you need to have a software :) And no problem! If you have any more questions, do let me know :))
Juliette Blueriver you should look into Affinity Designer if you’re into vector and pixel art (amazing built in brushes). If you’re more of a painter, then check out Procreate (much bigger variety of brushes to purchase - but there’s no vectors here). Both are a 1x fee (no subscriptions) and are relatively cheap. Good luck!

Oh come on, extremely slim?! 11mm vs 9mm, that's 2mm difference (10 sheets of paper). 5% sRGB difference not noticeable for human vision. For the extra $50 all you getting is 1 virtually wheel and tacky silver design... Is it worth the extra money? You decide... 💁♂️
I have the 15.6 Pro and have been considered selling it in order to buy an Innovator 16 or maybe even a Wacom Cintiq 16. Without promotional codes these two don't differ that much in price. I've read that the Innovator 16 has a better pen activation than the 15.6 Pro? Have you noticed that? That's why I stopped using my Artist 15.6 Pro. It felt like I had to press down like a crazy person in order to get some lines (relative to how light-handed I am, when using pens).
it definitely feels slightly more responsive! If you find that to be an issue you should try a different tablet. But if it's no big deal than the difference between the two is not that substantial :)

Ralph, that’s awesome that you are saving up for your dream! I use it with my 2015 laptop, so I think that super big and complex brushes do lag (but I feel like it’s the problem with laptop?). Otherwise, there was no heating up or anything like this. And I always have it plugged in and turned on. Hope that helps and good luck!

That’s a great question! Quality wise I’m not sure if the price difference justifies it 🤔 on the other hand it’s a new ver model so... I think it’s worth to think more what’s important to u. Sorry can’t give u an exact answer.

Pakinam, I use all the tablets I review for a short while and move on to the next, so can't say about long-term issues. But, I definitely would still recommend it! :)

Mmm good question! I think I’ve just always wanted to experience working with one :)) And this is a really good size display tablet, but I’m also used to working with large canvas for when I used to oil paint. And I feel that it would be more comfortable to use my entire shoulder for painting with a larger display. It’s not necessary though) hope that makes sense!

I'm gonna upgrade from my Artist 15.6 to the 15.6 Pro. Not interested in the Innovator one, I don't like the design and shape.
Anna,...how was the Lag? Did the lines and markings keep up with the stylus? Did You feel that the activation force was acceptable? I mean would it skip when you applied really light pressure or did the screen pick up the light lines well. Was the screen too slick or was there some decent friction to allow for a more paper-like feel? There have been reports that when using tilt near the edges of the screen that the tilt stops working about an inch away all the way around the screen's parameter. Did you experience this?
Togo Toons , I didn’t feel any lag, and it worked the same as Artist 15.6 Pro. So maybe I just got used to that tablet so it felt very comfortable :)
I think I'm sold. When you said that you stopped thinking about the tablet and pen and just focused on your art, that was it. The right tool for the job should let you focus on the job and not the tool. This was very helpful!

Anyone who has the tablet, how is the lag with light lines? I can't decide whether to get the innovator, because I hate any kinda slow/laggy lines and I don't want to find out it's a deal breaker, as returning the tablet would be an awful hassle. I'm deciding between Wacom cintiq 16 (non pro) and the innovator, and the anniversary price is great, but I like my pen strokes to be exact. I hate anything like line stabilization etc, and the lag sounds like it's got a similar feel to it.
I have been struggling with the same issue! I trust wacoms durability and quality but honestly it looks like xppen is catching up. I have heard the lag on you pen depends more on your computer (i have an intouse pro and when i do very large brushes it lags a little bit) but i heard with xppen if you do a super light brushstroke it has trouble registering it. I still dont know what to choose x.x

Thanks for the video, I currently own a Wacom Cintiq Pro 24 Creative Pen & Touch Display that I splurged on back in 2018 that I simply love. I have been looking at also buying a smaller more portable tablet when I am out and about. I had been looking at both the XP Pen Artist as well as this newer Innovator as well as the Huion tablets and will be purchasing one of these XP Pen tablets, probably this newer Innovator tablet as a result of your review video for the Innovator. Though you did not mention it in your review the reason I will be buying a tablet from XP Pen is because they provide Linux drivers. All of the Wacom tablets work out of the box on Linux because a group developed an open source driver years ago that is every bit as good as the official Wacom Windows drivers. I run a dual boot set up on all of my computers that has both Linux as well as Windows 10 installed. Lately I have been running Linux far more than Windows because all of the software I currently use were developed for Linux before they were ported to the other OS's. For art I use Krita, GIMP and Ink Scape, for 3D art I use Blender For music and video editing I use Bit Wig Studio and DaVinci Resolve 17, both of these programs are proprietary but the developers have versions that run natively on Linux.
I just purchased the Innovator on Amazon.com (US site), the normal price is $499 but at the moment (01/06.2021) there is a 100 dollar off coupon that brings the cost down to $399. I also purchased the non Anniversary edition because they wanted $50 for all of the extra stuff like the ball point pen, postcards etc and for me that was just not worth $50 plus the coupon was not available on the Anniversary edition.

I like the tablet but I wish that it had a touch interface but I knew that it did not before purchasing the tablet. The drivers were easy to install and the tablet worked as soon as it was plugged in. There are a couple of things that are not up to snuff, I mainly use the tablet with Corel Painter 12, and the tilt function dose not work very well, I am not sure if it is Painter or the tablet so I will have to try it with some different software. Also out of the box my tablets color was not right, it was ok but not great. I have a display calibrator that I used to crate a custom profile for the tablet that resolved that issue. I think that XP Pen needs to do a better job in this area. Even with these 2 issues I am not sorry I purchased it but I am considering buying the 16” Wacom tablet even though it costs about $200 more mainly because I own several different Wacom pens that will work with it and I miss not being able to use them. Along with the pen that came with my 24” pen display I also have their air brush pen and their art pen that along with supporting the tilt function it also supports rotation. Having rotation is great when painting using a fan brush, it really simulates using a fan brush in natural media like oils when you rotate the brush in your fingers. With that being said I would still highly recommend the XP Pen tablets because they are a lot less expensive that Wacom. My 24” tablet was expensive and cost $2500, it does have a 4K touch display that at the moment no one else has.

Hey there)) well, both have their upsides and downsides, (including Wacom). But overall, whichever one you go with, as long as it allows you to use it without thinking too much - you've made a good choice. And I felt like that with the both brands I've reviewed. Did you end up making a choice yet?

Yes, absolutely! The tablet works as a separate monitor, therefore to use it, it's necessary to have a computer where you host the drawing software and all of the files. Hope this answers your question :)
Also, is the matte surface the actual screen, or is it just another screen protector on top of a glossy screen?
It is a screen protector, XP-pen does this to reduce cost.

Hi sorry for all the questions 😂 I got my innovator 16, and I followed the tutorial on youtube from their channel on how to set it up with my MacBook. I did all the steps, but it only shows my desktop with my top bar of the screen and my wallpaper, nothing else. I can click stuff on my computer by placing my pen on the tablet, but my applications don't show up on my tablet. I was wondering if you could tell me what to do (it's fine if you can't, you've already helped me a lot)! Thank you!
Juliette Blueriver that’s a great question! It’s actually pretty easy, you have to go to the tablet settings where you adjust hotkeys, and change the monitor settings from your laptop to the tablet. I hope that makes sense! And then your pen will move the mouse on your tablet, not your laptop.
Also, it’s like a different screen, so nothing will show up until you drag an application to the tablet. I hope that was helpful! And I’m so excited for you, have fun 🥳

Juliette Just try it with a folder. Open a folder and move it away from your laptop (either left or right). :) then you will see it in the tablet!

Does anyone know why the xp pen store doesn't ship to a lot of countries in Europe? I live in the Netherlands and wasn't too surprised it didn't ship too my country, considering how tiny it is. But then I saw it didn't ship to Germany and France and then I got a bit confused.

Does the thinner, metal build of the Innovator 16 make it seem more fragile? I currently have the 15.6 Pro and feel like I could drop it and it would be fine, whereas I'd be worried if I dropped the Innovator it would break or chip.
It definitely feels more fragile, because it's so thin, but I don't think it is! The quality of the build is great, and they did want to make sure artists are able to travel with it so they made it more sturdy. I never dropped it but I'm not too scared to))

Hey, I have this tablet and sometimes the pen point isn't accurate to where I'm pointing on the screen. It's sometimes off by a few centimeters. I usually have to restart my laptop, mess around with the PenTablet screen settings, and open my drawing software (Krita) again to fix the problem. Is my tablet bugged or is there a way to fix this?

Juliette , that’s a great question! Actually, you would need to get a special adaptor that has a USB and HDMI ports. I’m actually getting a new MacBook and just ordered the adaptors. It’s a bit pricey but totally worth it! Hope this helps :)

Juliette, think of it as an iPad that you got, except it has to be connected to your laptop/computer... Or like an external monitor that you connect. So, it doesn’t actually hold anything but what’s shown from your laptop. So, yes, you need to have a software :) And no problem! If you have any more questions, do let me know :))

Juliette Blueriver you should look into Affinity Designer if you’re into vector and pixel art (amazing built in brushes). If you’re more of a painter, then check out Procreate (much bigger variety of brushes to purchase - but there’s no vectors here). Both are a 1x fee (no subscriptions) and are relatively cheap. Oh come on, extremely slim?! 11mm vs 9mm, that's 2mm difference (10 sheets of paper). 5% sRGB difference not noticeable for human vision. For the extra $50 all you getting is 1 virtually wheel and tacky silver design... Is it worth the extra money? You decide... 💁♂️

I have the 15.6 Pro and have been considered selling it in order to buy an Innovator 16 or maybe even a Wacom Cintiq 16. Without promotional codes these two don't differ that much in price.
I've read that the Innovator 16 has a better pen activation than the 15.6 Pro? Have you noticed that? That's why I stopped using my Artist 15.6 Pro. It felt like I had to press down like a crazy person in order to get some lines (relative to how light-handed I am, when using pens).
it definitely feels slightly more responsive! If you find that to be an issue you should try a different tablet. But if it's no big deal than the difference between the two is not that substantial :)
