Swingblade SAWMILL Build Ep.2 - Saw Carriage Fabrication

- This time I'm building a circular swingblade sawmill from scratch. The function of the mill is in its name - the blade swings 90 degrees making it possible to cut both ways while moving the carriage up and down the log resulting in dimensional lumber in one pass. I built a chainsaw mill ten years ago and milled lumber that I used for my cabin / sauna house project. Then I built a bandsaw mill five years ago and used the cut lumber to build a partition in my barn I currently call my workshop. Both of them worked great, bandsaw mill was faster than chainsaw mill for sure. But I think I can make an even faster mill and swingblade sawmill in my opinion is just what I'm looking for. There are different types of swingblade sawmills, one type utilizes a railway system where the saw carriage rides on rails so both rails are in the way when loading the logs. I want to build a beam-type mill where the saw carriage is suspended on a beam over the log that sits on a couple of wedges so it doesn't roll off while cutting. There will be no need to clamp the log down. Cut depth and width adjustments are all going to be made on the sawmill beam end frames. And to top it off - it will basically be a portable sawmill due to its build properties but I think it's only going to sit in my yard regardless of the portability. I've been "sitting on" this custom order circular blade for over a year now and I can finally start working on this dream. In this video I'm showing you saw carriage fabrication. I make the saw carriage out of rectangular tube and sheet metal. The legs where the pivot point bearing blocks mount to are 60x40x4mm square tubes. The rear piece is 60x30x2mm and the front cross piece is 40x40x2mm. I made the legs from a thicker material so there is no additional reinforcing needed in the tubes when clamping down the pivot point bearings. Those bearings have horizontal and vertical slots in them so the blade is adjustable in two planes, horizontal and vertical plane. I still need to make proper tensioners that sit under the bearing blocks and have threads on'em so I can precisely adjust the running of the blade. The rollers are just plain bearings on a calibrated shaft with a circlip in the end of it. Really simple and durable. I also made a test beam from materials I had laying around. The final beam will have 20x20x3 square tube rails. The test beam had 20x20x2mm and it was clearly too thin wall thickness due to suffering under all kinds of distortions when welding the rebar cross pieces and diagonals. I am enjoying this build very much and I hope you do too!

Donn be careful while using it when u finish. I made plenty of lumber with a design like yours. My mate done the reverse cut n dragged the blade through his ankle n cut his foot clean off.b

@@DonnDIY ah ok, at 23:06 when you swing it down, it really looks like the blade when mounted on the hub at the bottom of the shaft will cut right into the bottom of the rail support frame...
Coming along nicely! Why do you prefer the cutoff wheel over the plasma cutter? I've seen you use the plasma cutter sporadically but you always seem to come back to the cutoff wheel even for sheet metal.
The plasma cutter isn't turned on most of the time, neither the air compressor, which are both needed for plasma cutting. So it's just easier to grab the angle cutter and snip away with that.
@@DonnDIY Thanks for the reply. I too tend to use the cut-off wheel more often, also mostly due to the reasons you give (although it's also because I'm no good with the plasma cutter which of course is because I use it so seldom). I'm trying to get better at using the plasma cutter though as it's less dirty.
@@martinedelius He needs one of the plasma cutter with built in compressor.
@@kameljoe21 Yeah, that would work. He could keep the air compressor on and let the pressure regulator turn it off when not needed.
In my case I have a leak in the system I haven't found so I need to turn on the compressor by hand which makes it easier to just get the cutoff wheel. :/

It looks solid enough, but I just can’t respect a downhill welder.
I want to see this run, ive heard tail of this type of saw using very large blades like 5' in diameter but i dont think they are used anymore very dangerous. But what tool isnt.
I would mount gas spring or pneumatic cylinder to effortlessly put force on steel saw
Gas cylinder will come and it'll counteract the weight of the electric motor that'll be mounted on the swinging frame.

I wonder a lot. How are you going to transfer power from the engine to the saw blade. In my opinion you need a angel gearbox rigt in the pivot point.

Looking good Brutha! It's really tempting, especially when working with sharp metal with burrs and covered in dirt and oil, to leave your work gloves on while machining. But I've personally witnessed WAY too many people getting caught up in drill presses, mills, and lathes. Please don't wear your gloves while running rotating equipment. You're way too talented to wind up loosing a finger, or a hand, or maybe worse. It happens in less than a second.

hej, i have a homemade Swingblade that i have taken over. You should consider to make i wider, that is one thing i would like to change on mine. If you want to make doublecut and maybe take the cut in 2 or 3 passes then it need til be wide.
Internally triangulated bracing!? Lightweight AND rigid!? I guess that's what happens when the price of steel gets high enough 😂
Kidding aside, that's some very nice fabrication. Looking forward to seeing it in action.
Great concept, but you will need much much better spindle bearings. It will work for testing the function.

it was worth making the vertical and horizontal parts of the truss the same symmetrical, now when the temperature changes, the truss will twist a little, otherwise it would just bend, bending is easier to deal with than twisting ...

So far I still cant picture how this is going to work or if it's going to work. How and where is the track going to sit, on ground or on log or on another frame? What ever it sits on the blade still wont swing down, just like on work bench.........

Additional opposing rollers will be on the bottom edge so the carriage will be clamped on the beam diagonally.
