Dummer Beagles - Mount Sorrel, Great Wolford - Wednesday 27th 2024
Footage of illegal hare hunting is rare. In the infamous Hunting Office smokescreen webinars beagle packs were advised to pack up as soon as hunt saboteurs turn up. This is because the “trail hunting” smokescreen is a lot harder for foot packs to pull off than it is for mounted fox hunts. This footage shows what hare hunts get up to when they don’t think there are hunt sabs about
After arriving at the Dummer Beagles meet in Great Wolford we quickly sent a foot team inland towards the hunt and deployed a drone to keep an eye on them whilst the foot team made their way across the land. However not realising the drone was above them the Dummer carried on hunting with huntsman Setphen Duckmanton casting the beagles out across a field in the hope of finding the scent of a hare. They soon put one up, the hare waiting until the last second until it made its move quickly putting a field between itself and the pack of beagles.
Duckmanton and other members of the hunt can be seen standing and watching as the pack of beagles followed the exact line the hare had taken across the field, past the terrierman watching on his quadbike and into the next field. No one from the hunt did anything to stop the pack who carried on following the scent of the hare for several more fields.
Why is it that hare coursers are dealt with swiftly by police yet hare hunts (who do exactly the same) are left alone by the police. The only difference is one is carried out by rich landowners with power and connections whilst the other is carried out by trespassers
The secret deal scandal between the Warwickshire Hunt and Warwickshire Police has left hunters in Warwickshire thinking that they are untouchable and free to do as they please
PCC Philip Seccombe is quoted in the Rugby Observer 9th July 2017
“Rural communities can play their part by alerting us to any suspicious activity, such as vehicles parked in a rural areas, or by gateways to farmland, on grass verges, or on farm tracks or bridleways.......Coursing is illegal and unwelcome in Warwickshire and will not be tolerated.”
We wonder how many organised hare hunts Warwickshire Police have taken action against compared to hare coursers.

Brown hares
Protected during the closed season from February 1 to September 30, but can be shot outside of this period. Brown hares are considered a game species and can be shot year-round in England and Wales, with some restrictions in Scotland and Northern Ireland. They are the only game species in the UK without a closed season.
