I like alternate art cards, I'm thinking that wizards is cashing in on the political and company sentiment towards what has went on in the world. Could be the conspiracy theorists in me, but I've noticed how all companies have started running ads and doing what's trendy to make money. This secret lair like 95% of the others won't be for me either way.
It’s definitely not a conspiracy lol. It’s probably one of the biggest virtue signals I’ve seen in awhile. 90% of people that are praising Wotc saying how amazing this is, are the same people that bash them for SL’s as a cash grab and cry that wotc isn’t inclusive enough with their business practices.
Great vid guys! I think someone mentioned it already but the art in Ponder features Rielle from Ikoria. Shalai is a dope card but this art doesn’t move me as much as the ponder so we’ll have to see what the other 5 is to see if I want to purchase it. (I have yet to order a single secret lair). But another card I’d love to see is Koth of the Hammer as a black character
I'm not understanding the African ancestor stuff? Like it reminds me of the African witchdoctor stereotype and erases the vastly different cultures in Africa countries. Idk. "Black is Magic" isn't helping either. Makes me think of black magic. Might just be me, but I think Wizards' pandering kind of backfired. Love the art though.
LOL it does kind of feel like a stereotype. Making black people into witch doctors. As long as they don’t go too far and print a card like Armageddon showing destroying cities we good.
mainstream historians & corporations try to erase black history all the time by only referencing Africa. They refuse to acknowledge the history of blacks ruling & inhabiting Europe or South America. They push the mythology that all so-called blacks are from Africa which means slavery for those who live in the Western hemisphere. Basically this is nothing more than pandering to the so-called black community, and we eat trash like this up because our people are de-culturized.
Here a few months after this video .You guys were dead on the money about Teferi and Kaya being included. This is the first Secret Lair I have purchased. I mainly wanted the ponder and the Kaya, Ghost Assassin (I love the art on both). I know we know full list of the cards but I am hoping that there will be one bonus card that we do not know of and I am hoping that the card will be new art for Aminatou ,the Fateshifter. (here's to finding out. from what I understand, this secret lair was slightly delayed for when it should ship. folks should be getting it sometime in May).
I doubt we're going to see reprints of previous secret lair cards. I think that implies that if you don't buy it now, you can wait for it to come around again and that's not what they want
From what they've shown so far, the rest of the cards could be almost anything, though they'll probably steer clear of more recent reprints. Top-played EDH cards seem a fair bet👍
Considering the charity it makes sense they'll show off only female black women. Wouldn't doubt even more to come but TBA on other SL's celebrating BHM.
(Serious comment for once) That shalai art is sick. I think I will sit this one out. Only because of the virtue signaling. If WOTC wanted to support a charity I dont think it would be difficult to do for such a large company. Sincere donations are done quietly, not for publicity.
We know Kaya will be in the set in some form or fashion. The teaser art with her had her standing at the edge of a cliff and had very esoteric art. Full of browns. We’ll have to see what that is.
I did find in interesting that they used Shalai over Lyra dawnbringer. Don’t know what that’s suppose to mean when they talked about “the only angel of African descent”. I guess I missed something. Still very excited to see how this collection pans out, the artists they mentioned have some great material on twitter so seeing their takes on a magic card is gonna be neat to see

"Black Is Magic seeks to honor Blackness in its beautiful, global entirety, and to celebrate Black history and culture in both Magic: The Gathering and the real world." Yes it's shoved in our faces EVERYDAY, not just February. Replace "Black" with "White" , "Asian" , "Hispanic, Brown, red etc... Imagine putting another race/color above everyone else and labeling it "Excellence" or "Powerful" Artwork is great though.
