  • Why are both Toll Booths on the Wirral Side.
The Mersey Tunnel connects The Wirral with Liverpool and the rest of Merseyside. Ever since the Monks set up a ferry service a charge has been in place to cross the River. The tolls are for cars, buses, hgv but no toll for bikes.

Why are we paying tolls for the Bridges? The original bridge was always free and 4 lanes wide. Now it's two lanes wide and half pedestrianised/cycle lane, whilst the new one has/had stealth cameras on it (they ended up having to improve the signage regarding the tolls as so many people were being caught out!). Whilst in the North East, they got a brand new bridge and it's toll free!

when Queensway was built , the government paid half the cost . as long it remained free to use . on completion they asked the government if they could charge for one year to pay for the infostructure either side . the councils never stopped charging to this day .

Then when the time comes to refurbish the tunnels, who is going to pay for it? In New York City the states of New York and New Jersey are fighting a political war of who is going to pay for either refurbishing the railroad tunnels or build new tunnels? $10 billion is the present price tag, which is the annual budget for the US Department of Transportation. Amtrak's annual budget is $1 billion.... Tunnels are NOT cheap! Is Amtrak going to NOT spend a penny for ten years to build a new tunnel? Most likely the British will have a similar situation with these tunnels in the next fifty years too...

Lets be honest ... The Tunnels under The Mersey and The Bridges over The Mersey need to be constantly serviced and staffed ... that is the reason for The Tolls !!!

I have a couple of questions regarding the tolls. Firstly, does our road tax not contribute to the upkeep of the tunnels? They clearly are roads after all. Another point I must query is this, the current toll for a domestic vehicle,or a car to put it in other words is I believe £1.80. On many many occasions especially now during the pandemic with the staffed lanes not giving out change,I often pay £2 for my toll. I am surely one of many thousands of people to do so on a daily basis. My question is,where does the extra 20p I pay numerous times every month end up? If it goes to charity I have no problem donating. If it goes into the pocket of an already overpaid politician or councillor then I have a serious problem!!!

@@pleasantville4529 The Mersey Tunnels have separate entity status to the rest of the national road infrastructure, furthermore The Tunnel Police are separate to Merseyside Police, The Mersey Tunnels have separate by laws as well!.
What you have said in regard to over payment of the official fee (that happens on the buses as well) that is just the refusal of The Money Handling Exchange as you can pick up The Pandemic through handling change.
That excess money just goes into where the rest of the money goes ... in financing The Tunnels ... Your silly comment at the end, is just not worth any response.

@@merseydave1 If my silly comment isn't worth a response then why would you respond? The overpayment should go to charity. However, thank you for clearing up the public highway enquiry for me.
