This style of rap is called ''cloud rap'' and Yung Lean is considered as one of the pioneers of it alongside other american rappers like Lil B, Black Kray, Lucki Ecks and more. Cloud rap and Yung Lean has influenced many modern rappers like Travis Scott, who does more of a psychadelic type of rap and also artists like Playboi Carti and XXXTentacion. I'm not totally sure about how he came up in the scene but i would guess that he was more famous worldwide than in Sweden but he was definitely also shown love in Sweden since his first show with his group was in Gothenburg and he also got nominated for ''hiphop artist of the year'' in Sweden in 2013.

He went to deep on the drugs and has amazing music after his stay at the mental hospital where he describes what his mind is hallucinating.

He is more underground as well and focuses more on an international carreer than other swedish artists since he caters to that underground hiphop scene, which is not only in sweden. I really like him but some people find him hard to listen to and don’t take him seriously. He isn’t super conventional/commercial.

You picked up really astutely on the nature of this genre, it is very atmospheric and focused on overal vibe than technical rapping ability or even lyrics. But, as he matured his lyrics got better, while maintaining an absurd and child-like quality

This is more for the sad youth, he did a lot of songs with sadboys. He did lots of drugs, maybe still does. My son is a fan, he made me watch the documentary of this artists life and it was really depressing. Not something I like listening to.

yung lean's music is definitively an acquired taste. To be honest i think he is more well known outside of Sweden.
