--------
In this clip, Donell Jones spoke to Shawn Prez about putting together his first album, and he admitted that he knew he was going to have a successful project. Speaking about the album, “My Heart,” Donell revealed that he was nervous and scared to put out a solo project after only being in groups before. Donell then spoke about his “In the Hood” single off of the album, and he also detailed covering Stevie Wonder’s “Knocks Me Off My Feet.” Donell then revealed that he didn’t even know it was Stevie’s song, and he added that a producer he was working with asked him to sing it. From there, Donell detailed dropping his next album three years later, and he explained that the break between albums had to do with him being on LaFace with TLC and Usher and not wanting to come out at the same time as them. When speaking about the “Way I Want to Be” album, Donell detailed working with Left Eye on “U Know What’s Up.”

“U know what’s up” is a monument to the black community. The epitome of feel good music and embracing our black culture. 💪🏾
Facts
Yes hearing that song always puts me in a good mood!
In a real way
In a real way
FACTS my momma loved that song plus lefteye was her favorite
D. Jones should have won a grammy for his 'Where I Wanna Be' album. Absolutely zero skips on it, possibly my favorite R&B of all time up there with K-Ci & Jojo's 'Love Always'
Facts 🙌🏾 k ci and JoJo did they thang on you bring me up
I loooooooove both of those albums.
I agree, Speaker.
Donell's "Where I Wanna Be" should've had the similar recognition as Usher's "Confessions" album or maybe even Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" album (yes, I said it).
@@furiousstyles9662 It's 'Last Night's Letter' & K-Ci's cover of 'Love Ballad' for me!
I agree
Donnell is an under appreciated ARTIST when it comes to 90’s & early 2000’s R&B. Along with many others, I miss the those days 😞
I thought Donnell produced all that record and all his music, didn't know he was under baby, maybe things cud of been different for Donnell Jones if he hit with that music in 2021 persay who really knows.
I second this motion.
Left Eye's verse tho 🔥🔥🔥. Too see where female rap is at now and go back and listen to her verse on "U Know What's Up". Crazy man!
I loved her verse. I think it was the best verse for put down for a R&B song.
Left Eye’s verse on that track and her presence in the video is timeless and Dope AF
That's that Gemini ♊ shit. 🔥🔥🔥 and lets not forget the long walk down the hallway while killing the verse. Lol
Lefteye slayed that verse 💯👏👏👏
She wasn’t appreciated back then as she should of been
My Jam! When Left Eye comes in and struts down that hallway....🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Loved his remake of Stevie Wonders. 'Knocks me off my feet'. He really did a good job covering that song
He did, but how he never heard that song or didn’t know it was a Stevie Wonder song?!
@@len1975 lol I was thinking the same thing😂😂
U can let Donnell Jones first 2 albums ride front to back 🙌🏾 classics 🔥
Yes I still do!
FACTS 🎯💯
FRONT TO BACK!
The actual song that got me listening to him is "Shorty got her 👀 on me". The song is melodic and smooth! "You know what's up" is the song that get you up and dance and sometimes makes you want to recite Left Eye's verse. I loved the "Where I wanna be (99)" album but I have 3 favorites. 1Shorty got her eyes on me. 2 You know what's up. 3This Luv. Rip Left Eye!
Been listening to em but that song smooth
That song is so slept on!
Have you seen her .. ride to
@@fresha4561 gonna listen to it
Still to this day one of my most favorite songs of all time.
It's a shame we'll probably never hear another one like that again.

She would've been 51 years old 😔❤
Yes, rest on❤❤❤
Could listen to this song on repeat! Damn he was so talented! His Stevie Wonder remake was dope too
Donell Jones writing Get It Together for 702 always blew my mind. That record was incredible
As a Serbian kid, who just moved to kuwait, starting to learn english, getting introduced to rap & rnb (Blackstreet was my first tape☺️) this song will forever be my number 1. It’s been on every playlist of mine since. Throughout the years
Left Eye did very well with that remix.
U Know What's Up is a CLASSIC... love all the versions of the track - the orignal, the remix with Lefteye and the forgotten 'rap millennium remix' with Xzibit, 50 Cent, Pharoahe Monch, Fat Joe, Cuban Linx and Treach.
“All her love” is one of my all time favorite songs. I’ll NEVER get tired of that song.
Yesss and I hope it's you he has soo many chill songs OML 🥺💓💓
Donell jones one of the greatest of all time this guy a legend for real
🙌🏾
Donell Jones!!! Truly a legend in this RnB game! Put some respect on that man name!!
Donnell Jones gave us so many great R&B classics throughout the '90s and early 2000's. He needs to be mention more when we talk about great R&B talents from those eras. Where I wanna be album is such a gem its definitely one of the best R&B albums of the '90s. I wish him and Left-eye would have collab more they mesh so well together. This was a good interview.
Where I wanna be album is a certified classic. He’s a 🐐
That “Where I wanna be” album im still playing to this day! But “this love” on that album is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
"U Know What's Up", "Poison", "This Is How We Do It", & "Return Of The Mack" are the top 4 songs that as soon as that beat drops, I immediately gotta get up & move.
Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give Up" and Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk" is up there too.
But there's way too many R&B tracks that has the first note that gets people going.
That's a dope list.
Lmao. I’ve been blasting Donnell Jones all this love since the pandemic. Dudes a legend.
all this love is such a great record
One of my favorites
Where I wanna be in an RnB classic album. No skips . My favorite track was where I wanna be, that’s a grown man song right there
Nothing but RESPECT and LOVE and GRATITUDE for Donnell Jones ❤️ His contribution to R&B is INVALUABLE!!!!! Thank you for sharing your gifts and for all the hits! Still bump your music in 2022!!!
I just got chills when he said : "...your next album drops in 1999..."
He definitely made “Knock Me Off My Feet” HIS…so it makes sense that he never heard it…& “You Know What’s Up” is a top down in the Summertime ANTHEM!!🔥🔥
“Where I want to be” is beautiful song from a man’s perspective.
Within the first second of hearing ‘You Know What’s Up’ I knew it was a hit💯
Yes! S/O to the interviewer giving Donell his flowers well deserved 💐
I listen to his first 2 albums like they just came out . Classic r&b where you can listen to the albums straight through without skipping a song . Still my fav to this day
I’m a dj and anytime u play U Know What’s Up, u have to play the entire song. Its a perfect song.
I still bump that track till this day..
Till This Day
We need more Donell Jones in our lives! Keep making music.
D is one of my all time favorite artist's, but i dont know his face proper and I've never heard him speak until today, I've ONLY heard him sing. That is wild considering how much of his music... i practically grew up to his jams.
“Way I Want to Be” album I could not skip a track. That right there is a classic.
the most underrated artist EVER! ever song he drops is SOLID!!!
That album is 🔥
Still playing it in 2022
Had so much love making off of “Where I wanna be” album shout out too Donell Jones
Definitely the most underrated r&b singer ever this guys got countless classics and writes for everyone but never gets props my all time fave
I can played that album straight through without skipping any songs. I listen to the whole album. I was just playing this on my phone. while I was in the shower just vibing.
You know what is such a blessing universal song. Its love, lust, passion, cook out, clubs, riding around town. Ita a artistic song that expressed Attraction and magnetism On a profound scale. Alot of times people cant even express the feelings, vibes, and vivid visions that song manifest in our minds. Incredible song
I love Donnell! Where I wanna be album is a classic!! I miss 90’s music! 90’s music makes me happy!!!
Donell jones - My heart is an Rnb classic. So smooth and sensual
RIP LEFT EYE 🙏🏾
YOOO THAT ONE ALBUM IS MY FAVORITE ALBUM EVER “where I wanna be” should’ve won a Grammy!!!!!!
He is so underated. His first 3 albums were everything.
That was smart of Donnell to wait 3 years to drop that album. He def would have gotten lost in the shuffle with all those hot artists in the mid 90s. I'm glad to see he was still getting money during that break by writing.
I don't have the words to describe how good this song is.
I listen to Donell Jones on a regular basis
Nocap
Love what he has done for r&b thank you D.jones you have inspired so many with timeless records 🔥✍🏾
7:45 “We did a lot of things together “
Sounds and looks like he smashed it 😎
Man is definitely an underrated writer.
Where I wanna be is such a classic from Start to finish album
My Heart is a classic 🔥No interruptions & Natural thang are 2 dopes songs on it. The whole CD still slap til this day.
I remember my RnB playlist was sick, I would play U Know What's Up, No More by Ruff Endz and Put Me Down by Donell Jones back to back and be hype haha
1 of the legends this generation never got to see
“Shorty got her Eyes on me”! 🔥 🔥
Glad he waited those 3 years. His 2nd album stuck like glue.
Joe, Donell Jones and Anthony Hamilton are my top 3 R&B soul male artists. I'm never disappointed with these men.
Anthony Hamilton??
When that album came out, I used to always listen to Quarter Past 3 and let it ride into Where I Wanna Be. Those 2 songs together was always just a brilliant track setup.
Yesss💓🥺
“Shorty got her eyes on me” was the first single off that album. Nobody remembers it because they pushed the album back like 6 months
How he didn’t that was a Stevie Wonder song is mind blowing!
especially since it’s off in the key of life
I love donell jones music every year i always listen to his albums. Because what i notice is each album represents the growth of him being a singer. The sad part about it is i never thought he got the respect he deserves. I feel like its a lot of people not all but a few after his second album come out and it was a huge hit. They really didnt take the time to pay close attention to the album life goes on. The only singles i hear on the radio was you know that i love u . And put me down. But that whole album was fire if u take the time to listen to each track. U can see the difference between this album. And the second album. he also made other albums that i felt again wasnt took seriously. I would love to see him get his flowers from some type of award show.
That song is timeless. Was in elementary when it came out.
Lol that smile he made when he said we did alot of things together donell hit that
Dude wrote "get it together"..Had no idea.I love that song fom 702....
You know what’s up still gets radio play today!
Shout out to Mt. Vernon NY. Played a big part in that 90's R&B and hip hop
His 1st single from the "Where I Wanna Be" album was actually "Shorty Got Her Eyes On Me." 😉
I could remember at 9 years old listening to that album cause I stole my aunt cd and that was his album
Salute to Mount Vernon!
Homie a whole legend
Where I wanna be .... TIMELESS
THIS LUV is his best song!
I still think his 1st album was slept on. My Heart was a classic!
That Knocks Me Off My Feet is an underrated song...I actually like his version better than Stevie's. It might've been good that he didn't hear it beforehand.
TLC’s Fanmail dropped in 99
Damn that’s wild… he didn’t even mention my cousin Felicia McKenzie from Paterson, New Jersey. She’s the one who WROTE THE DAMN RECORD! The hook, everything except Left Eyes verse! She even went and changed the beat around. The original beat was a lot slower and it was more of a ballad than a club dance track. She wrote a bunch of bangers back in the day and didn’t get her just due. They used her. She could sing most of these artists from then and now under a damn table and her writing chops are impeccable. She had to sue the damn label to get her credits on the track, which didn’t even come about until almost 2 years after the song came out. The industry is a grimey ass business man. Super Grimey.
She on the credits for that song when u google it
What other songs did she write?
I was in high school singing 'where I wanna be " going thru my rocky relationship.😂 had that on repeat.m
Where I wanna Be…from beginning to end classic
My favorite collaboration 🎉❤
True R & B dude 💯
Where i wanna be is one of the best RB albums ever,, All fire from 1 to done,,, Gotta lot of buns off that CD 💿 on the first Playstation the Grey joint 😂😂😂
Left Eye 6:45
Classic record
September Love💜
There is no way he never heard the Stevie Wonder song because he sung it just like he song it
Glad u said it lol
My thoughts exactly 💯👌
I still listen to this cd.
Low-key Donnell Jones was Neyo before Neyo
Yeah but way less corny/fruity.
Ooooooooooohhh say what say what say what...Straight up 2 stepping to that joint
That tune was electric and the video that was shot so well just turned out to be perfect combination, thought Donnell should got more light that he did, but I'm sure he happy with the bag lol
Wow not knowing that Knocks me off my feet was done by Stevie Wonder and he killed it I like D version better than the original.
Lol 😂 “…we need something, which is gonna pop this sh*t off”!
Such a handsome smile
that where I wanna be album was so good with no damn skips
No one sounds like Mr Jones he’s my fav RNB artist
To this day Shorty got her eyes on me is one of my favorite songs
I love Donnell he looks so fine ♥️❤️
