Haha poor Shelly having to explain through some of these books again and again :D I'm also jumping past a few, just don't need to hear it again. Still appreciate all these uploads from you!

Martyr was one of the best books of 2024. Kaveh Akbar was unbelievably good.

Percival Everett's books are so quirky and odd (in a good way). Not for everyone. James is brilliant and heartbreaking and fascinating, but also he took a more straightforward approach to his writing and it worked so well. If you like books that are just this side of normal, after reading James dive into more Percival Everett.

I thought Beautyland was lovely. I teared up at the end. Martyr was…okay. Just okay for me. I can’t understand all the praise for it…but that’s just me.

    • @Shellyish

You and many other commenters have agreed on Martyr being over-hyped.

Reviews on YT have made me wonder whether I'd find Martyr! interesting. Then I see written reviews that say it is 'wildly entertaining' and a 'wonderfully strange delight' which isn't at all how I've been imagining it. I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I liked Martyr! a lot, but those are definitely not phrases I would use to describe it. I would say... tense, heartbreaking, contemplative, confusing, lovely, and frustrating 😂 It also made me seriously concerned for the author, but I've heard he's apparently doing fine 😅

Everyone seems to be listing All Fours as a fave. I truly disliked that book. It was my WORST read of 2024. It was my first Miranda July book, but I have a feeling that Miranda July will fall into the same category for me as Zadie Smith and Richard Powers… authors whose works are beloved by everybody but me.

TIME chose Trump as their person of the year TWICE - I’ll take their book suggestions with…..what’s tinier than a grain of a grain of salt?

A least it shows they still possess a modicum of integrity. After everything the liberal left put him through, and how he overcame all their lies and insanity, President Trump DESERVES to be named the person of the year. He has more than earned it! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

All Fours is my kind of book, but I did not enjoy it! It’s like hanging out with that friend that is over-the-top, only talks about themselves and tries way too hard to be relevant. They might be fun for a quick lunch but definitely not any longer. I don’t recommend it.
