Interesting commentary.. I have been shooting for 61 years and have always used the split finger draw and it is my preference.. I am an instinctive shooter and use to practice so much and at unknown distances to develop my skills.. I do not aim.. I feel it.. My brain knows where my hand is in relation to a target at any shooting distance.. Its a very zen like experience.. When I shot field archery guys were always checking my looking for some kind of reference marks I could consistently hit a 60 yd target.. I was able to place second in Maryland state competition bowhunter group..

The purpose of 3 under is to raise the arrow up closer to the eye. You can get as high/higher with split finger by anchoring a finger or two higher (that's what Fred Bear did). That messes less with your bow's tiller too. Another way is to use a thumb draw/release and one of the higher Turkish anchors. More than one way to skin a cat and bend a bow.

Yep. It can definitely affect tiller. So can fixed crawl etc. The extent of the affect is also dependent on bow length.

3 fingers imo is better for aiming and split is better for instinctive . I switched to split finger and instinctive when I started playing with heavy arrows as I feel split finger is also better for longer ranges unless your doing stuff like string walking

Great vid thank you! PS. Curious why you use a split tab upside down when you shoot 3 under? Is it a comfort or practical thing? Or you just happened to own a split tab, so you keep using it?

Funny you ask that lol! Actually I screwed up one time while cutting a slit for a split finger tab from an existing split finger tab. I put them face to face instead of back to face. I ended up cutting the slit between the middle finger and ring finger instead of middle finger and index finger. I ended up liking it so no I do that to all my tabs. So yes, it’s a “feel” thing but I did it by accident lol

I like that, split finger more used by old timers, tell that to almost every Olympic bow shooter in the world, apart from the barebow shooters obviously 😎🏹🙏

I have shot both ways, shoot instinctive and snap shoot when the need arises. I prefer the split finger for better control. I anchor to the corner of my mouth with my middle finger. I have shot a ton of fish and game this way and it just feels the best and I just prefer it. Whatever works best for you is what you should do. I also shoot some shorter bows like my 58" Bear split finger. Have used tabs and gloves but use mainly gloves because I can and do shoot barefinger at times. The native Americans of which I am, shot a lot differently and were very successful. Regardless of style of bow or finger hold, as so many successful people in history and even now could attest to, anyone can master any style and be very very proficient with it with enough practice. The Comanches shot from horses from any angle, any position and were deadly with their short bows. It is always about focusing on the spot meant to hit and just doing it. Like throwing a baseball or a football, you just do it enough and never argue with the brain's ability as you gain experience. learn how to focus on tiny targets and then a squirrel becomes a bigger target. shoot each arrow like your life depended on it, something unknown to the average modern electrified person.

I have been shooting for 61 years as a split finger archer and discovered in my 40’s, due to lots of practice, I do not aim.. I am an instinctive shooter and believe that my brain recognizes the position of my hand in relation to the target.. I practiced ant mostly unknown distance and could hit a 12” circle at 60 yards.. I competed in our state shoot to have fun and took 2nd place in the bowhunter division.. sighting down the shaft or estimating the gap never made any sense to me..,I could usually tell as soon as I leased if the arrow was on.. Its sort of a Zen experience.. ..

That’s pretty cool. I’ve never been able to get there with pure instinctive.

You should try anchoring with your ring finger or middle finger in the corner of your mouth it should bring your shot down

Split shooting will always be quieter I think 3 under is a bit more accurate 15 and in barely ...split will always be more accurate 20 and out or Olympic shooters would all be 3 under 😉😎
3 under become popular when string walking and fixed crawl came into Forte via TH-cam influencers

    • @bowhuntingsoul2149
      @bowhuntingsoul2149  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep. Split always sounds quieter to me but it “feels” weird with the arrow squishing between your fingers. And I’d shoot 3 feet high if I did split lol

@@bowhuntingsoul2149 I've had a couple buddies go from 3 under to split they will never go back because of how much smoother and quiet the shot is took them maybe a couple weeks

So far I’m still a split but I will never say never, now I know why you went to 3 under LOL.

One IS better than the other! Just ask people. :)
Serious for the new archer.... try them both..... and find out which works best for you, but be prepared to shoot a lot of arrows.
I could never get split to work for me.
I know Byron Ferguson who split shoots said that if he was younger and starting out he would shoot 3 under.
Is that an outdoor range with a (nice) elevated (tree stand) platform to shoot from?

Yep I went to three under because when I moved that arrow closer to my cheekbone my point on moved drastically and made gap shooting for me much easier. For me as I relearned how to shoot trad this adjustment paid off. Thanks cool stuff

I shoot split finger and actually use finger savers so I really don't make much "pinch contact" with my fingers on the arrow ... I have tried three under using a tab, but really didn't care much for it. But very good video & thanks for sharing.

  • @eduardorodriguez6479

If you are shopping instinctive archery you don't aim. I respect if you prefer the 3 under, but if you are going to aim you are not shooting instinctive.

... vs four fingers, vs two fingers, vs thumb draw, vs pinch., vs many others... Why only the two?

Because split and 3 under are the two most common. Also I have no experience with the other styles.

Thanks for sharing! I switched to split finger just before buying a 52" Bear Kodiak Magnum. No matter what my bare shafts would be nock high. Changed to 3 under and problem fixed. I have a hug calloused point on my index finger knuckle from pinching the nock of the arrow shooting split finger. 3 under it is.

I shot split for 25 yrs. and tried 3 under a few times but never really gave it a honest chance. About a year ago I was determined to give it another try and stuck with it. I will never go back to split finger. It gets the arrow closer to my eye which gives me better alignment. When you first try it you will shoot low until you make the adjustment. It's all good!
