Kanpur Zoological Park or Allen Forest Zoo (Hindi: कानपुर चिड़ियाघर / कानपुर प्राणी उद्यान), also called the Kanpur Zoo is a 76.56-hectare (189.2-acre) zoo in Kanpur, a large city in Northern India. It is the largest open green space in Kanpur and the largest zoological park in North India. Originally a natural habitat for fauna, it is one of the few zoos in India created in a natural forest. The animals inhabited in the Zoological Park have been put in open and moated enclosures. The moated enclosures give the animal ample space for movement and help in expressing their biological and physiological expressions.
Zoological Park in Kanpur, (earlier Cawnpore) was the brainchild of a botanist Sir Allen, a member of the British Indian Civil Service. Sir Allen wanted to open the zoo in a natural forest, but his plans were stuck in bureaucratic red-tape and did not materialize. When the zoo at last opened in 1971 by the government of independent India, it was named after him.
Allen forest was developed during the British rule between the years 1913-1918 by George Berney Allen, a famous British industrialist of Kanpur on the banks of the river Ganga. The zoo was constructed from 1971-1973 under the supervision of then IFS officer RS Bhadauria. The first animal to arrive at the zoo was an otter caught by a fisherman from the Chambal River.
In 1975, the first appointed doctor of the zoo was Dr. Ashwani Kumar Tripathi, who graduated from the G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences. Dr. Tripathi contributed to efforts in introducing modern technology to keep the animals healthy. The enclosures for animals and birds were designed on the latest trends in the field of zoo building technology, well spread along the lake on either side of a semicircular arterial road of about 9 km. length
1971 में खुला यह चिड़ियाघर भारत के सर्वोत्तम चिड़ियाघरों में एक है। क्षेत्रफल की दृष्टि से यह भारत का तीसरा सबसे बड़ा चिड़ियाघर है। यह कानपुर शहर में स्थित है। यहाँ पर लगभग 1250 जीव-जंतु है। कुछ समय पिकनिट के तौर पर बिताने और जीव-जंतुओं को देखने के लिए यह चिड़ियाघर एक बेहतरीन जगह है।
क्षेत्रफल 77 हेक्टेयर
ब्रिटिश इंडियन सिविल सर्विस के सदस्य सर एलेन यहाँ पर फैले प्राकृतिक जंगलों में यह चिड़ियाघर खोलना चाहते थे पर ब्रिटिश काल में उनकी यह योजना जमीन पर नहीं उतर सकी। जब यह चिड़ियाघर भारत सरकार द्वारा 1971 में खोला गया तो इसका नाम उन्हीं के नाम पर रखा गया।
इसके निर्माण कार्य में २ वर्ष लगे और यह आम लोगो के लिए 4 फ़रवरी 1974 को खोला गया। यहाँ का पहला जानवर उद्बीलाव था जो की चम्बल घाटी से आया था। कानपुर में इस्थित मंधना (ब्लू वर्ल्ड) से पास में है। यह रजत बुक स्टाल के पास से भी जाया जा सकता है।
