“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2:14
what's your point, that God wants a racist to help Christians bring about the end of the world, with all the suffering that would entail? You're ridiculous. Choose any line of scripture and you can make something out of it, who cares?
Her saying “I hope so” when talking about whether they take sex appeal into consideration with female tv hosts- not a good look for her. Most of us would rather get the job based on the work we put into it and the skills we bring to the table.
This is the main reason I stopped being a libertarian many years ago. The whole doctrine falls apart when you realize people aren't inherently good when left to their own devices.
I am not sure it has anything to do with whether people are inherently good. What is inherent is that "left to their own devices" people will get together with other people and create rules and make collective decisions.
+oldfriendofmine then you probably didn't know what a libertarian was 2 years ago (when you left this comment). Libertarian's acknowledge that folks need to be left the hell alone, but also acknowledge that the government is necessary in maintaining certain rules and an environment where each citizen is capable of being able to exercise their rights and pursuit of "happiness" (whatever that may be).
Dr. Dhoom ah. In regards to climate change, environmental awareness, and simply just being clean, there's been a lot of legislation that's being proposed to police how people live their lives, rather than paving a way or encouraging positive behavior. For example, folks didn't want to recycle in my neighborhood until the city provided recycling bins for free or very low costs. Now every house (as far as I've seen in the past 15 years) always has a recycle bin outside on Thursdays. Same goes for using green machinery and utilities. I think what Bill Maher said holds some water. People are inherently selfish and greedy and will only do things if they find that they don't have to sacrifice much at all and there's a reasonable payout. As a libertarian, I believe the government has no place to police my life so heavily that it works to my detriment. What do you think, Dr.?
Exactly. So we should give some of those awful people guns and let them boss around everyone else. That's sure to make all those awful people into angels.
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 1 Corinthians 1:10
Denominational Distinctions are DIVISION BY DEFINITION. Elders not found within one's own congregation, they are PRIMARILY brought in from other places and Seminaries and congregations do not know them. They bring in wrong traditions, every kind of doctrine under the sun and since most believers have little knowledge and understanding of God's breathed words, congregations seldom have men and women qualified to interview a man who is there to apply as a PASTOR for TEACHING THEM FOR YEARS. Unfortunately, only 1 elder in a congregation who is usually not confronted if and when he begins going against the plain language of the doctrines GIVEN in the EPISTLES ADDRESSED TO THE BODY OF CHRIST SPECIFICALLY in the New Testament. That HAS CAUSED UNMITIGATED DIVISION within the body of Christ. In the BODY OF CHRIST the teaching of the GOSPEL is all over the place, many so-called denominations have glaring differences on what the gospel teaches concerning Salvation! Emoting is catered to, that CAUSES DIVISION BY DEFINITION as believers and the UNSAVED, both, feel and can EASILY be misled by IGNORANCE that CAUSES a VACUUM that is filled by feelings instead of the clear LIGHT of TRUTH. The Apostle Paul predicts this by the Holy Spirit in his EPISTLES ADDRESSED TO THE BODY OF CHRIST SPECIFICALLY. This is usually not confronted by so- called leaders in seminaries and the congregations THEMSELVES and then almost no congregation contains people who are qualified for interviewing a man to be an elder/pastor, or deacon, etc. The CONGREGATIONS can only have music-meals-dramas-collect monies- have car washes-church size yard sales-prayer breakfast-read books in sunday school by anyone but GOD'S BREATHED WORDS CALLED THE BIBLE- this scenario is comfortable ground for believers and the UNSAVED and it would be nearly impossible to tell the difference between the two.
Although I love a good debate, atheists cussing like sailors around ministers always bothers me. Shows a lack of respect. Shows a persons character. Nuff said
I wouldn't call Jeffress a minister, he is an idealogue who wants to put his tribe in control of government and shove his ideas down our throats. Nuff said.
Jonathan Crossley The sword is a representation of having authority to judge. Biblically, Jesus took the laws to the cross with him and claimed that he came with a sword, not for peace. He also warned his followers that if they live by the sword they would die by the sword. It was metaphoric for telling them that they are not to bring the law against each other, or when the time comes for Jesus to judge them, they will be judged according to the laws they imposed on others. The laws were impossible to follow for anyone, hence why Jesus carried their burden and fulfilled them. Hebrews 7-8 talks about why the laws needed to go. I think near the end of 1 Corinthians 15, it points out that Jesus conquered sin/death/laws.
Aren't there better ways to express yourself then to condemn people who you don't agree with? While you wish hell fire on another at the same time you words are a product of demons. What path do you think you are on when you talk dirt like this about a servant of God? You are destroying your own life with hellish words like this. I would be more careful with what I let out of my mouth if I were you. This is abusive, hateful language that needs to stop for your own sake as well as others. No one needs to hear this kind of disrespectful, arrogant talk from anyone.
Marie N you just express the problem with religion. If he's "a man of God", nothing he does could be bad. Unearned moral superiority. I hope your "trolling". I feel bad for you ma'am.
"There are two things that are almost always true; the world keeps getting better, and people think its getting worse." Who is that a quote from? I've heard it many times, can't quite remember though.
Steven Pinker, a Harvard professor, has a book "The Better Angels of Our Nature: The Decline of Violence in History and Its Causes", which catalogues, with statistical rigor, the decrease in violence/suffering in society, which is at odds with our exaggerated sense that things are getting worse - a perception driven by media hype. This decline in violence and suffering demonstrates, despite what religious people say, that increasing secularization of a society DOES NOT lead to moral decline.
"If the constraints of society were lifted and I was all that was between you and a meal, you'd crack my skull open with a rock and eat my mating parts." I absolutely agree with Bill. Without our internal restraint or outside forces of suppression (e.g. the police), it would be utter, debased chaos.
What's wrong with his belief that people should choose what they put into their bodies? We do EXACTLY that with food, which more often than not kills us before cigarettes or drugs.
Dr. Jeffress seems to be on point when he's preaching, but appears to "cave" when he's in the (more) public eye. Don't claim that man is generally good when the Bible says that "the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it?" (Jer 17:9). Jesus said "Why do you call Me good? There is none good, but One, that is God" (Matt 19:17).
boywonder228 what happens is that people arent good in reality. People just appear better or good on the standards of man. Not exactly of God. He said the same thing just a little different.
Both things are always true Sometime Penn is a little bit too optimistic, sometime Bill is a little bit too cynical. One thing is even more true: They are both fuckin' awesome!
I love Penn, but now and then I have to remind myself he's a member of the Cato Institute, so sometimes he can talk in generalisations. He does hit the mark now and then, I'll give him that.
The first question was mine. Intention was to ask whether he confuses unintelligence with conservative's instinct to be mean when they are confronted with the illogic and hypocrisy of many of their positions.
American rule number one: I'm alright Jack, screw you. From that one rule all else follows; health care, foreign policy, personal wealth, or lack of it, religious and political affiliations, or lack of them, etc.
I sow the video about a debate with a person about same sex gender people, and really I'm very proud of Dr. Robert. I'm a real women born and race as it is. Is she a real woman? Shame of this religions that think that they have the right to change God's Word to their own personal desires.
@tomofnorthcal Absolutely. Certainly there would be some people that would be terrible without the law enforced. But think of how many people live in rural enough areas where you could literally do whatever the hell you wanted to you distant neighbor and likely not get caught for an extremely long time. Either that does happen and we just dont know or hear about it, or (much more likely) it's extremely rare that it happens.
Agree with Bill completely starting after 3:00. People are situational and if put in a situations and positions of power and control we will do things unimaginable in a normal society everybody has a threshold and a breaking point. some is higher, some is lower...but dont give me that morality play. EVERYONE HAS A BREAKING POINT.
Haha! Awesome! But Penn really should get his idea of how vicious humans are straight. I'am not saying that everyone would become murderers, it's just that everyones capable and it would happen for a LOT of us if there would be nothing to stop us.
I disagree with both Bill and Penn Jillette. First off, I definetly don't believe all people are naturally good. Both psychology and sociology disprove that. Morality is learned and yes, people do tend to be situational. Second, It's been proven that in a state of disasters people tend to either revert to most basic destructive instincts while others become almost saint like in their desire to help others. But Thom Hartmann said it best. In the game of life, we need referees to keep us in line.
The argument here was wrong. Society decides the rules that we want to live by. Our compassion and solidarity determines those rules. We have a social contract that we are signed up to (whether we want to or not). We have police to ensure that those who abuse the rules are brought to justice. However, if the rules were not opinion of the vast majority of society, then we would not be a social species. We are a social species, the majority want these rules and do not need police to live by them.
Penn has a point about people being good. But making the argument that people not having list of people to kill is rather weak. Most criminals doesn't have lists and there are random criminals. It's true that there are many people that are good against people that are bad. But I have to agree with Bill. It's either they are forced to commit a crime or they chose to, for some personal reason, given the situation. We can only hope that people are good but you cannot always expect them to be.
My Bro Atheist Penn is just wrong. I'm an atheist too, but I am inform, we need structure in order to be good with people that are different than us, like people that are our enemies.
I'm a good person. i think good about everybody. but i know that not everybody is like that some people are mean, some want to steal, some are all about money some want to cheat.. its hard to be away from things when things can really spoil you in a second. we all make a choice end of the day.good or bad, i pick good in all actions that i do being a philanthropist1
ALL talk shows are "scripted"...to a certain degree...Time constraints make editing a necessity...That said, one of the great attractions of Bill Mahers show is it's unscripted, no holds barred, feel...It feels "honest"...Shows like you see on Sunday mornings attract viewers for the same reason...Non-intellectuals need not tune in...It would just PISS them off...
I love Penn Jillette but I have to counter his Polio argument with one word, Cancer. When polio came about, there was an effort to actually cure it which succeeded but due to our corporate manipulated food system, stunted healthcare system and the massive money from "treatments" as opposed to "cure", I fear that we will see no actual cure in our current system even if one does exist. There's simply too much money in keeping the disease around.
@TreonZaden But there is a lot of money in curing a disease as well. The providers that offer only treatments lose money, but the ones that offer a cure can make money.
i completely agree with penn. ur'a saint man, i think people are nautrally good. it makes no sense not to be. if we werent, no progress would be made. there was once no reasonal authority in human time (cavemen and such)...and we made it out and better. its natural
Right. How dare somebody change their mind on something when somebody else makes a valid point, right?. Are you saying that he should stick to his original beliefs even when he's wrong? I fucking hope not.
Robert Jeffress in the bomb!

Dr. Dhoom ah. Dylan MacKinnon lol exactly, Penn is talking about normal middle class people and youtube comments is definitely not that lol
Dylan MacKinnon exactly! !!
One of my favorite Overtime episodes :)
Pastor Jeffries has an awesome perspective! I love his hilarious laughter!
jameswwindsor I’ll tell you what he is, he’s a nut!
One of the most fun, interesting discussions and it didn't have to be about common talking points.
I love how Penn always has this way of taking the issues he's talking about seriously but not taking himself too seriously.
Great panel. Just wish I could watch entire episodes.

That's for Christians only, not atheists.

I would love to sit next to both Penn and Teller and talk about this.
dudee wtfff?? that was the most funny ending i had seen of a show in a while.
Excellent conversation.
I agree with Penn. The stats also agree. 99.622% of the time nothing is going to happen.

David Topchiev Ever heard of separation of church and state?
samesies :) penn and bill are so rockin together
Cannot believe it, someone else almost word for word saying the same thing that I have known for decades. Bravo!!
"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
One of the funniest overtimes recently. :)

Oh, I completely agree about that.
Best panel ever!
Bill is 100% right.
I like the way Penn thinks.
Our my former pastor admitting to eating Jack Daniels ice cream. Priceless.
"It is getting meaner and dumber..." funny but true :)
Robert Jeffress is the most amazing religious person I've seen with Bill Maher
love the end
penn should come on the show more
God bless you Robert Jeffress for your faith in God!! You weren't given much opportunity to speak.
Marie N lol what?
He seems so nervous though!

Of course. He takes God very seriously as we all should.
