@@VintageRiflesShootersClub cool, I got on the L96A1 wagon too quick back in the late 90's. I ordered one from their Oak Ridge Tennessee location, At that time they only provided rifles with US made Cooper match barrels, I still have it in all green.
I also came to know one of the employees of the plant, I got lucky and I bought one of Malcolm Cooper's personal Tikka target rifle which is still in my collection with beautiful walnut stock. That model is not available in U.S. , I believe I still have the email of the employee, in some way authenticating that rifle used to be in Malcolm Cooper's personal rifle collection.

Believe it or not, The British Army abandoned sniper training in the late 60s early 70s. When NI kicked off they went cap in hand to the Royal Marines to retrain and rebadge us Pongos. I was fortunate to be on one of the first courses held in Warminster around 1973!

Not too sure about that, I was sent on a Marksman's Course (same as the Infantry were doing on their Sniper Courses, but I was a tank soldier, so didn't do the sneaky-beaky stuff, just the shooting) It was run by the Infantry at Sennelager in 1975 and using a No.4T with a Springfield Sling (so nice to use).
Our unit had three guys trained with the No. 4T and did a refresher course at Ballykinler N.I., later that same year. So, yup I don't believe your comment.

In Northern Ireland, back in 1972, the British Army's winning sniper team, helped by the rows of flags hanging from all the street lampposts in the village of Coalisland, destroyed a unit of the Provisional IRA at ranges later measured at 1400 yards, using their L42A1 rifles.

In service the scope let the L42A1 down, but with better glass and quality ammo it's a sub MOA rifle - the Enfield Enforcer (Police Issue) actually arrived with a lighter trigger and Pecar 4 - 10x scope but either is a classic piece of history.

Great review. The L42A1 by any measure is dated, it was dated in the Falklands campaign, and that from a Para Sniper I know who was there. However, they are a rifle that in good hands can hit things. Importantly, hit things in all kinds of conditions and situations. Fast to do that too. Which can't be said of many a modern Police or Sniper rifle.
There were a good few spare barrels made, so not so long ago it was easy enough to put a copy together. Heck, build one even a little better.
7.62/308, 300m, with some better glass, then they make fine , reliable, hunting rifles still. A rifleman's rifle.

    • @muskett4108
      @muskett4108 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Paul-45-70 By all accounts everything has trouble with sand. I suspect there wasn't really a problem with the AIs, just not enough to go around; and what was needed was reach, so some L42s brought out of Battalion storage. Not too soon after the Designated Marksman Rifle was bought in reasonable numbers. These now make up a part of the Section replacing LSWs, Minimis, and even the GPMG is now relegated to Sustained Fire Support.
Basically, brought back the Bren to the Section, giving accurate fire to extended ranges to supplement/compliment the infantry rifle/assault rifles.
It might be fun to have a Bren do the Vintage Rifle Shoot, Designated Marksman Rifle too.
I left the military in 1999, so wasn't about for these events.

I suspect the S&B scopes were the old stock from the initial AI introduction. (They went for the x10 eventually, but there was a lot of reluctance to go large on magnification from the old school types. Thankfully, progress eventually made it through.
As said there was a real demand for reach over 5.56, and Designated Marksmen Rifles were on the drawing board/order.

Regarding attacking an enemy ship with a sniper rifle, if you haven't heard of Jack Hinson during the American Civil War you should read up on him. He was a farmer in what was known at the time as "the land between the rivers". His two teenage sons, hunting deer on their land during the time that the area was occupied by Union Forces, were apprehended by Union cavalry troops. They were immediately declared to be "Bushwackers" and were summarily tied to trees and executed. Their bodies were bound by ropes and were drug back to town, where they were cut loose and their heads cut off by sabres. The heads were then carried in a sack back to the Hinson farm and stuck on to the gate posts in front of the house.
Understandably, Jack Hinson was deeply offended by this.
Biding his time, he went to a gunsmith that he knew and had a .50 caliber "Kentucky rifle" built to his specification, and set out on a vendetta to kill as many Union Troops as he could, starting with the Lieutenant and the sergeant who ordered the execution and who carried it out.
Eventually he relocated his family out of the area, deeding his farm over to his faithful slaves, and writing out for them letters of manumission.
Jack Hinson himself moved into a cave on a bluff overlooking the Tennessee river, where there happened to be an island which funneled the river current through a narrow channel which had the effect of speeding the flow of the current and impeding the passage of steamboats coming up river to Union-held Nashville, Tennessee. From the mouth of this cave he would pick off mostly Union officers, sometimes waiting until two officers stood on deck in line in his sights, and killing them both with one shot. He would then light his pipe and enjoy a smoke, then reload his rifle and take another shot.
Note that the current was so rapid that it would take a steamer sometimes up to 45 minutes to pass by his cave, so he had plenty of time for a smoke between shots.
On one occasion a Yankee steamer was so impeded by the rapid current that it actually struck it's colors and ran up a white flag. Then it turned into the bank and tied up, waiting for Confederate cavalry to ride down to the river and accept their surrender. After waiting for some time for someone to surrender to, not knowing it was only Jack, that they eventually raised steam again and continued on their journey.
Jack Hinson's rifle is on display in a museum, and has 36 "kill" notches carved into the stock. It is thought that Hinson actually killed over 100 Union soldiers, but he only counted the officers.

What a curiously oddball yet still fascinating rifle?! I find poking out to longer extended ranges is pretty dang fun, one could even say it's 'addictive'... I was already sort of a natural at shooting since even before I could drive, but about 7 years ago I got a new rifle I specifically geared for long range work and took to it like a Duck to water. 🦆
Even with a d.o.p.e. chart as a "cheat sheet" it's not exactly easy. If you forget about important details things can start getting _complicated_ pretty quickly past 400+ yards. If the air temperature, barometric pressure, or your altitude from one shooting area to the next changes much from what the conditions were like when that chart was 'zeroed' for, it can throw your elevation adjustments WAY off!
Example: from one trip in Wyoming @ 65°F, to the next one in Eastern Washington a week later 1000ft lower in elevation @32°F and almost starting to snow, my ballistics at only 500 yards dropped 1 FOOT!

The scopes on the L42A1 were a bit crap. Four or five power ( ? ) with a moving reticle rather than moving image. Not great optics. They were left over from the No4T rifles of WW-2
You'd pay a huge amount of money for one nowadays, because of collectors. You used to be able to buy an almost identical optic without turrets that was used with field guns ( artillery ) and that could be mocked up into a nice replica for wallhangers or deacs, but once that became common knowledge the price of those went through the roof, considering what you were getting.
I can't remember what optic I had on my L42A1 ( replica converted from a 7.62 target rifle ) but I think it might have been a six power Meopta, because I actually wanted to shoot the damn thing and hit stuff :-)))

This is early 80s S&B scope. There is no grid in it, no Mil dots yet. Reticle is thin, hair like crosshair with tiny dot in the middle. Glass is good, just they didn't have their shit together with reticles yet at that time...Also, this field is not so calm as you think. You don't have wind on targets often, because past 450, everything is trapped in the zone with trees on the both sides, but right after the shooting platform, there is completely open field up to 300yds. Then wind just bounces back and swirls. One of the funniest shooting ranges wind wise I used and it's in very wind active area. Winds today are clocking 30mph but, on Monday we are shifting to 50mph...lol. Hard to work sometimes here...

@@VintageRiflesShootersClub Thank you, Rob! I found you gave a great overview of the optics near the end of the discussion. You can tell how spoiled we are these days with our illuminated, laser-etched reticles, thick tubes and internally adjusted, sealed, positive-click turrets when you look at scopes from the '70s and before!

Good content and shooting but it would be better if you showed the unique receiver markings that ID'd it as a true L42A1. These rifles have skyrocketed in appreciation and value. A newcomer to them should know the very basics of what a real vs. faux example is before attempting to look for one. Providing them a baseline ID could help them in avoiding an unpleasant experience.

Good Day, Ian's books are good but the book "The British Sniper: A Century of Evolution" by Steve Houghton is a better reference for a prospective L42A1 buyer.
