I coveted a hori hori knife for years until my son gifted me the tool a few christmases ago. They are a bit pricy but will last a lifetime and can be passed on. Its a substantial and sharp tool so you'll need to wear the sheath and holster it when not in use. It cuts twine, measures planting depth, can be used as a digging trowel for setting in plants and bulbs, has a blade for cutting tender shoots and stems and the serrated edge is a mini saw blade for pruning small branches and woody stems.

This knife is pricey but I snapped 2 of them. Ended up going with a nisaku and it’s great

I don't cut asparagus spears below the surface. I just snap them off. Where they break is the tender point.

Just a note, hoes and shovels should be sharpened! I think about 35 degree angle. But go 25 degrees, it'll cut better. Just use a file. Like if there's roots, a sharp shovel works so much better. A regular hoe, it cuts through any type weed easier.

    • @TrueFoodTV

Fortunately with no dig veg gardening, I rarely need to cut out any big roots.

I use a drip irrigation. Never need a shovel for no-dig gardening. Pruners, yes, but only for tomato leaves. I can do everything else with the hori hori.

As a tool connoisseur, I'm surprised I've never heard of an asparagus knife. But now I have FOMO and will order one. But WHY are we supposed to cut them below the surface? I cut mine pretty flush. But is this why I'm getting more spears on the perimeter of last year's harvest rather than the middle? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks for the great content!

I have never heard that you are supposed to cut asparagus below the soil line, do you know why it is that you are supposed to? I was taught to just snap it off where it naturally breaks so that you don't get any of the woody part, if it has started to become woody.

I guess that I'm probably called a well seasoned gardner and I agree that you did highlight some very useful tools. The following is just what I like . No use for a holster, I have a stirrup hoe which I use on occasion .Not big on it but it's useful and nice to have in the toolbox. I have 4 different hoes and I use them all just depending on what I'm doing. The same with 4 different rakes, and 4 different shovels, 4 different trowels and I use them all depending on the activity and soil conditions ect. The twine is a staple here and the hori hori knife I hardly ever use. A scissor works much better to cut the twine and is safer. I'm not excited about the raised garden beds. I am using repurposed concrete that has been broken up into pieces from a driveway removal. I have many garden beds and I probably have 180' or more of bed edging. The beds I have are 4"-5" high and I image they retain soil moisture much better than taller beds. For this gardener your best recommendation is the asparagus knife and I'm scratching my head why I have never bought one. Just never knew about it which is amazing to me so thank you for showing the old dog a tool he will be purchasing soon. The right tool for the right job makes so much differenence so not a fan of one tool for all purpose. For sure I could make a go of it with one hoe, one shovel, one trowel and one rake.
When did you go to no dig gardening? I just got done last week transitioning to the no dig gardening method. Will see how that works out. Charles Dowding in the UK who is on TH-cam lit the match for me on no dig. He also showed me what and how a dibble is used. An indispensable tool especially for no dig. I made my own similar to the one he uses but they can also be purchased online. I'm fired up here in central Iowa, USA to get growing.
Many Thanks Nichole! I love your presentations and the diversity of subjects that you cover.

That metal is going to leach into your soil. Probably won't kill you and your plants look terrific but still not for me. I farm in a very hot and pretty dry location and raised beds take more water. I just make raised beds with compost and wood chips in between. I can see advantages to using raised beds if you are in a very wet climate or your soil is contaminated in some way. I have a spot I use large fabric pots with the bottoms cut out as raised beds, over a former rock driveway from previous owners

Initially I started watching, where I'm thinking such a pretty lovely lady. But, consider the chest like the engine compartment. Then the abdomen, that's the fuel tank, lubrication system that supplies the engine with fuel, then all the components to supply the chassis. Which the head is the CPU system. But, what can't be seen is the Soul which gives the vessel life. Without the soul, the vessel doesn't operate. If you do not use good fuel, lubricants, nutrients, etc., the chasis squeaks, the engine runs rough until it doesn't run any more. So one needs high quality fuels. But, got to look after the soul so it can live longer and still capable of getting a new vessel in later times as resurrection, 😃 😊 😀 😄 😁 😆
