- This video aims to be a compendium of the previous learnings, and a decisive breakthrough in realistic modeling.
To realistically model there are several phases that we must go through.
The first moments of modeling are exciting ... they are fascinating ...! We take something out of nothing with a life of its own. That's where the Impressionists stay. But other facets of the development of sculpture are also lost, such as the fusion between the rational and the intuitive parts.
In previous videos, we went through various stages, modeling techniques that have led us to a realistic figure with part of the character of our character, but without being a true portrait of "Rosendo". Now, we want to overcome the obstacles that we face.
We have developed the volume from a series of random photographs, often in different expressions and ages of the character. And now we review our work phases:
1 The generated volume already has a lot of it, but we have not yet reached the detail phase. We have made a bust a bit rough and without definition, with slight errors of "type" and character.
2. We have the correct measurements that we have verified with a digital photography program. The measures coincide, but there is still a lot of drawing.
3 We have the "Type: thin, chin tucked in the face, cheekbones marked, muscular jaw, eyebrows facing out, broad forehead, intense look, mouth with thin lips and not too wide, wrinkles on the cheekbones and marked features. And we got to lose weight in the neck and be athletic slim.
4- Today we want to go into the details
It is here when a greater concentration is required because a slip could spoil the general advance. We will try to fine-tune the detail, and try to portray from a single point of view, from a single photograph to the old Egyptian style.
This is difficult for a sculptor who always have that holistic view of the figure from all points of view.
With this video we will learn to model the nose and eyes in the detail phase.
I start by fixing the tip of the nose. The brush has to make circular movements around the ball.
The brush, being a soft element, costs more work to model with it. It's a matter of Technique and lever.
Step to do the wrinkles. We put a churro in each of them. But this has the danger that you can go over the volume. I do it with the wooden stick because it helps to do it in a more agile way.
We continue a little more with the polishing of this area that we have been working on.
We continue working in the mouth area to reach a work model that may interest us.
Sculpture is a continuous process of improvement, that's why art teachers always say: the work wins, by making certain strokes.
Now I am modeling the lower part of the nose, along with the upper jaw and along with the upper part of the lip. I model it with the brush to polish those areas and be able to reach certain parts that you would not reach easily, in another way.
With the brush you quickly approach polishing, and thus, you know if you have reached the model you are looking for.
As you can see, the brush has a white adhesive tape reinforcement. This is to be able to pry and move the material.
Now I am applying a little mass, because the smile is shaped like a hyperbolic paraboloid, that is, like a saddle seen from the inside. Two curves make up this surface.
Getting to the real representation of a person is complicated, we can fine-tune the detail, but we may not be getting the character. Little by little, we will be achieving the character, with the wrinkles and traits that we will be drawing, and we will go from an unreal to a more real model. It's complicated ... but we're going to try to make it look alike.
Now with the modeling stick, we sharpen the eye between lights and shadows.
We have found this photograph of Rosendo, which is much more interesting than the previous ones, it is a more mature Rosendo. In addition you can appreciate his look.
Previously I only sketched my eyes, half closed, so as not to complicate myself too much. Now, I am trying to work the figure together and from all points of view, so as not to get lost in the detail. Nor have I left the analytical modeling, measuring, and checking the measurements and proportions.
