  • There are people who can quickly memorize lists of thousands of numbers, the order of all the cards in a deck (or ten!), and much more. Science writer Joshua Foer describes the technique -- called the memory palace -- and shows off its most remarkable feature: anyone can learn how to use it, including him.

“It is forgetting, not remembering, that is the essence of what makes us human. To make sense of the world, we must filter it. "To think," Borges writes, "is to forget.”

Yeah, that make it even more interesting. He was not one of those "brain controllers" but was able to learn to be one of those, making that vessel part of the source itself.

Ha, that was awesome. When he revealed those pictures, I actually remembered things that made the pictures wrong--like those nudists were supposed to all be fat and that the gang from the Wizard of Oz were supposed to be coming out of the oven.
No, in seriousness, this talk was awesome for explaining to me why I did well in school even though I'm not all that smart--I do have great focus, I had fewer distractions than most, and I wanted to learn.

You, sir, just saved my ass. I have a huge Latin test, and I already have got the Active verb endings down with my mental image of me in exercise clothes...it's got Jesus for the perfect endings, a Time Lord for the future endings (bo and bow tie)...this is great!!

I use my smartphone and iPad to learn. Not sure I agree that it drains my brain. I did a memory seminar long ago and use these techniques and people think i am amazing. I find my memory has enhanced,

The following mnemonic technique [Vowels: Mathematical Operations] was devised as a memory compensation technique in coma recovery ('94 BA & BS Texas A&M). It is regularly purported to no avail at AAPT (American Association of Physics Teachers); however when speaking at Syracuse University, this author was televised (2:30) by WTVH mnemonicwriting.com It has educational potential for formula recollection to encourage further study thereof at a younger age to encourage further academic studies?
While in the Army, Mr. Schunicht was involved in a fatal mid-air collision being rendered unconscious for three weeks. Everything had to be relearned. A pragmatic discovery was made for memory compensation. The "a" (multiplication) =>"@", "o" (division) =>"over", "i" (subtraction) =>"minus", "u" (addition) =>"plus", & "e" => "equals". Most constants and variables are indeed consonants, e.g. "c" = "speed of light" & "z" = "altitude". ADDITIONAL CONSONANTS made be added to inhance a letter combination's intelligibility. Examples include an acronym for The Quadratic Theorem: exCePT i buiLD rabbiTS 4 caTS oN 2 HaTS. Everyone remembers Dr. Seuss (Theodore Seuss Giselle)?
***Note how remarkable this mnemonic technique is amongst any Western Language, whereas Eastern characters have yet to be explored. Regardless, its potential remains limitless as Delta X =>0 This mnemonic technique has been selected to Marquis' WORLD Who's Who ever since '01 -'19, and most recently selected to a Lifetime Achiever: ltachiever@marquisww.com

Agreed/understood the majority of his points, but how can one use visualization/context to remember the order of 14,000 binary numbers? Numbers with no significance or relevance.

Nick Talbot well... and I’m no expert , but in his book and in Dominic O’Brien’s book(Dominic is 8 times world memory champion) they usually translate numbers into letters , than add characters that fit those letters, so for example if 2 is b(second letter of the alphabet and 5 is s(5 looks like s) , than the character you add here is Brittany Spears: bs, you only need 9 letters that remind you of the 9 numbers, and than make the characters, if your too lazy , than just find something the number looks like or sounds like, and than add it in the memory palace , so 5 looks like a hook, so I add Captain Hook, 0 is a ball 2 is a snake, and this is far better than the regular way to memorize numbers used by average joes, however it’s not good enough for memory champions, numbers wise
