We're in South Jersey, too. But we're near Mauricetown, about an hour south of Egg Harbor City station. So when we have crossed the country to Sacramento and back via Amtrak, we left from and arrived at Wilmington. But we did the same thing: NEC to DC, DC to Chicago on Capitol Limited (love the trip), then Zephyr to Sacramento. A week later we returned via the same route. By the way, I found the Acela seats far less comfortable than the regular NEC trains. We also found the Acela to DC to have very poor roadbed a year ago. It was much better heading north when a few years ago I took the Acela to Boston and back. When we went to DC on business for a day, we made a point of taking the regular NEC train back - only 10 min. slower anyway, no big deal.

Thanks Rod, I really enjoyed your video! It took my better-half and I back to 13 months ago when we were enjoying the ride from Denver to SF on board the George Pullman. It took me back to my return on the CL, DC to Chicago back in 96 (lucked out and got a roomette in the transition sleeper then). 'Looking forward to your other videos! Jen
I took a train from Los Angeles to Tampa Florida, first leg to Chicago was in a sleeper car like you had and the trip down to Tampa in coaches. Nice video...I just got off my first Amtrak train at 7:30 this morning in DC from Orlando, and will be riding the 29 Capital Limited at 4:05 this afternoon heading to South Bend, Indiana. Should be fun!! 😆
Rod, this was just amazing! That Camcorder is second to none! I live in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. and watching you travel from Egg Harbor all the way to Seattle was outstanding! Great Video. Looking to go across to California as I havent done it in some time. Last trip was from Bayhead, to NE Corridor to Chicago and finished in Denver. Thank's for getting me ready to get going again!!
Rod, just amazing! I have not been west of Denver by train (the Zephyr anyway) and it was just great to get a preview of what lies ahead ;-) I noticed you had mentioned that you had flown back to Philadelphia and that gave me a great idea for the return trip. Of course I would love to round trip it like I did the last time but time might not allow that having 6 days of train travel. Again just great stuff and like someone else mentioned it felt like I was right with you especially watching on my 1080p 24" Hi Def HP Monitor lol. Rod I like your video, I used to live in Elwood,NJ from 12/14/1963 to 6/21/1969. Stargard you should travel the Cardinal from Washington, DC to Chicago. I rode on the Cardinal that runs Tri weekly between New York City & Chicago via Newark,NJ, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, DC, Charlottesville,VA, Charleston,WV, Cincinnati & Indianapolis. The best scenery on the Cardinal route is between Culpeper,VA & Charleston,WV during daylight hours going Westbound, it is one of the most scenic routes in the Eastern United States. There's the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle, a very scenic route along the California coast, in Oregon & Washington State.
This video involves the following trains: New Jersey Transit - Atlantic City Line: Egg Harbor City to Philadelphia 30th Street Station Amtrak - Northeast Regional: Philadelphia 30th Street Station to Washington, DC Union Station Amtrak - Capitol Limited: Washington, DC Union Station to Chicago Union Station

all those late departures is why this rail fan won't take the train anywhere. Amtrak deserves to lose ridership with that lousy service. I did like your video though.
All of the late departures on the board were because of a blocked mainline between Wilmington and Baltimore if my memory serves me correctly. To me, train travel isn't about punctuality, but enjoying the experience on the rails, particularly when your traveling coast to coast.

It is an absolute shame that the U.S.A., supposedly a world leader, super-power and 1st world country, cannot operate a passenger rail system ON TIME. It looks like almost every train was late, not just a few minutes, but an hour or more. How will we ever get people out of their cars and onto trains with that type of service? Shameful!
Whose ass(es) have to be kicked to fix this? (Actually, as long as we insist that every cow path, lane and street have a level crossing for every track, we won't)
Couple of reasons.
One: Other than the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak doesn't own the right of way: it rents it out from freight lines, and if CSX is hauling a load of perishables, Amtrak gets put on a siding and is told to wait for the freight. This actually happened to me while I was going from DC down to Richmond, so I know whereof I speak.
Two: Demand for passenger rail in the US, outside of the Northeast Corridor line, just isn't there. Sure, there are some passengers for whom the journey is part of the experience. But most Americans would rather fly from, say, New York to Los Angeles in a couple of hours, than spend a couple of DAYS dealing with Acela-Capitol Limited-Southwest Chief, and God help you if you miss your connection in Chicago because the Capitol Limited had to wait for the freight.
Three: I noticed the heavy rain as the train was pulling into DC. The route from Philadelphia to DC has a LOT more trees along it than you'd expect, and downed trees (or God-forbid wires!) anywhere along that route--all one hundred-plus miles of it--can snarl rail traffic all over the East Coast. It's not commonplace, but it does happen if the weather gets terrible.
Four: Rail travel means you're going to be coming into your destination without a car (the Auto Train is a lonesome exception.) Not a problem in Europe, where most cities have good (and safer!) mass transit than the US. Like the old commercial once said, it's not just a car, it's your freedom, and taking Amtrak means you'll be depending on someone else to get around once you get there. That's not practical in some parts of the country, and not SAFE in others.
As an aside, more American cities might have better transit if local politicians would use their tax revenue to build actual projects, not just divvy up the money to buy votes to get themselves re-elected, but you do NOT want to get me started on THAT one. Exhibit A is in this very video, in fact. See the Silver Spring Transit Center at 18:38? They started building that monstrosity in 2008, and thanks in very large part to the incompetence of the Montgomery County government, it is STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION as this is being typed. Locals joke that the new opening date is "God only knows, plus another six months of construction delays."
The short answer is that outside of the Northeast Corridor, most Americans--fairly or not--don't seem to consider passenger rail to be "serious" transportation in the jet age. Whether or not Amtrak's on-time performance is a cause of that, or simply a reflection of it, is a chicken-or-egg conundrum that may not have a solution.
Those trains were late because of an issue along the corridor south of Wilmington the block the corridor for hours.....

Oh, please. Been there, seen that. There's a REASON Pepco is one of the most hated companies in the US. Any strong thunderstorm can turn out the lights for half of Montgomery County for days on end. And you REALLY have to have chutzpah to take a week to get your customers' electricity back on, and then slap on a surcharge for the time the customers were without power, as happened after the 2012 derecho.
So, yeah...they definitely need to modernize the grid, especially if there's anything to the idea of an EMP attack.
No one will take the train if it's as much as 1 hour late not even a train enthusiast like me.
