We had a two British law enforcement officials come over to testify in a trial in federal court in the late 90s. When they first got here, they wanted to go to TGI Friday's for the great food. I do think their culinary scene has improved since then fortunately. LOL

Matthew is officially my spirit animal lol I'm a huge English history nerd myself. Him describing it being surreal seeing Wellington's tomb is a feeling I TOTALLY understand. When I was last in London I was lucky enough to see the Bacton Altar cloth, which is almost certainly the only surviving dress (or at least constructed of that dress) of Queen Elizabeth I. I probably spent close to two hours in that room looking at every detail, and actually got a little teary eyed. Historical sites and artifacts spark the imagination, and make you feel like you can almost touch the past. The story of Anne Boleyn and her daughter Queen Elizabeth I is one of the biggest feminist FUs in history, and I've been obsessed for years. That's the thing about England. You feel like you're walking through Disneyland or a movie set and have to remind yourself it's all actually real. Go in January. Weird? Yes. Worth it? 100% I ended up in the crypts of Canterbury Cathedral all by myself. It was unreal. A priest came up behind me to tell me they were closing to the public and nearly scared me out of my skin. I thought he would pee himself laughing at me :) One of my favorite memories. What sacred places those cathedrals are. If you can attend an Evensong at any of them, even if you aren't a bit religious, do it.

  • @DenaInWyo
    @DenaInWyo หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Hopefully my overkill in comments is helpful to the channel lol But anyway, couple more things. In the small building to the left of the Jewel Tower, St Peter Ad Vincula, Queen Anne Boleyn, her brother the Viscount Rochford, Queen Katherine Howard and many others who were victims of the Tower are buried. For tours in London, definitely check out Tours by Locals. They are walking tours that are "free" but it's expected to tip the guide. I've been on several there and other cities and they are just fantastic! The British Museum is incredible, but if you have time, don't miss the Museum of London. It takes you through the history of the city, all 2,000 years of it and is just incredible. Sigh, I need to get back there very soon, obviously!

Great video. I will be interested to see how you get to Southampton. We went to London first as well. We ended up taking a bus from Victoria Station which was a bit cheaper and easier to deal with luggage from what we heard versus taking a train. The cabs in London are awesome for handling luggage and the bus was great for that as well. Victoria station was not luxurious but had some reasonable food options. We paid a couple extra Pounds to pick two seats together up front. If I go again, I will probably spend an extra day in Southampton, what little I saw in transit looked like it had some neat local things to explore.

The guards you saw at the changeing of the guard were the one of the regiments of Gurkas who are from Nepal and the other was one of the five devisions of the foot guards, I can't really tell which one but the band was the one for the Irish guards which can be identified by the blue plume on their bearskin hats. The fur for the bearskin hats comes from brown Bears that are culled in Canada to control the wild population.

Glad to see you embracing your visit to the U.K taking in the sights and architecture of London. But treat London as an aperitif only because the main course is when you venture outside the Capital then you will really appreciate your visit at a more sedate pace, London is too much hustle & bustle trying to cram too much in and not having enough time to do it. Your money will go a lot further too as everything is overpriced in the Capital. As nice as London is it pails in comparison to many places in the U.K. You will visit many beautiful scenic iconic places too many to name that will stay forever in your memories, where people will have more time for you, i.e the real U.K.

Monarchs are King and Queen of Kingdoms and realms. England lost it's status as a Kingdom in 1707 during the reign of Queen Anne. As a result Anne was the last "Queen of England" (Queen Elizabeth II was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms. _Not_ 'England'.) I have heard many people talk about the English army at Waterloo. Wellesley and indeed most of the Army who fought under him at Waterloo were not English. Wellesley was Irish and most of his troops were Scottish, Irish, and Welsh. British, yes. English, no.

One thing is you cannot do London on day.
Should use HoHO buses. Shore excursions way too much for a day tour and expensive.
Been to London many times and always use HOHO bus and get a London transport card.
Always use the Underground app for trains and Google maps for above ground.
London tower beefeaters are called yeomen. The guards are Nepaleses(well done Matthew) also known as the Ghurkas and are amazing soldiers and love a fight but Uk govmnt. Pay them peanuts.
Apart from British Museum part thought the rest was pretty poor.

The Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, not only trounced Napoleon at Waterloo, he gave us the famous Wellington Boot - what we all know here, as our rubber and all purpose “Wellies” 😀
The Tower of London - the Beefeaters - that is just a nickname - their true name is a Yeoman Warder. The Guard was formed way back in 1485 by Henry VII.
Shocked and indeed surprised you were “underwhelmed” by His Majesty’s Crown Jewels! 😳🤔you have NEVER been able to take photos of them - it’s not a new thing! It’s to prevent any living relative of Colonel Thomas Blood trying to break in and nick them like Thomas Blood actually did in 1671! They have been under armed guard since that date. You cannot be too careful with His Majesty’s precious ornaments!! 😲😄
Sorry to be impersonal but your fish n chips looked “unpleasant”! The company might claim that they make “the best fish n chips” but I wouldn’t agree with that bold statement! You need to buy and eat them in a real and operational😢 “fish n chip - a chippie 😉” shop where they are cooked on the premises and served hot and fresh in a grease proofed paper roll (in the good old days, they used to be served in what was yesterday’s daily newspaper 😄)
Looks like you had a good but very tiring time - planning to see London in one day is an impossibility unless your ‘day” is a year long! I have lived in London all my life and there are places I have never been to! Are you hoping to return some time to continue your visit? You could go up the Shard and have an afternoon tea! (And look down on what we know as the River Thames not The Thames River…. I know! 🤷 )

Some don't have any kind of inexpensive plan so here are some recommendations if you google something like international traveling cell phone coverage you'll get a lot of places to research. Off the top of my head after checking with your carrier and coverage and they don't have international travel to where you are going or surrounding areas, sometimes, getting a local SIM card is your best option when traveling internationally, SIM data plans are another cost-effective option for using your cell phone abroad and if you do a lot of travel and need to get a new phone Google Pixel phones and Goggle Fi service has international coverage.
OR there are International Cell Phone rental companies you can research. Friend of mine uses something that she rents for travel abroad. That doesn't work on cruise ships though that just for land. Cruises generally, unless your cell company has a cruising plan coverage, you need to connect and get ship wifi.

I love how people who don’t live in London feel free to comment on how bad London is because they only visited the tourist traps in the centre - London is more than 606 square miles in size (just London, not the hinterland or metropolitan area surrounding it) and so most people only see less than 10% of it. Most of London is just like the rest of the country, and not like the central touristy parts. You might not think to visit outside the central tourist places, but like the rest of the country there are also places worth visiting whether you like historic market towns with Roman or pre-England (pre the year 927) Anglo-Saxon ruins, pretty villages and hamlets, farms and open countryside, historic houses and gardens, museums etc.)

While I agree that there is SO much more to England, I have enjoyed London too. But you're right. It's like saying you went to New York City and so you've been to the United States. Not sure how anyone who has been to ANY big city in the United States can say that London is "bad" after only seeing the center. For heaven's sake...I saw exactly ONE person "sleeping rough" and that was with a sleeping bag provided by the city. in 10 days I had exactly ONE situation where I secured my purse a little closer due to a somewhat sketchy character in Trafalgar Square. Have these people been to Seattle lately? That said, I don't discredit the amount of history, things to do and see, and culture of many nationalities to be experienced in London. It's my favorite city in the world. If you get to England though, it really is VERY worthwhile to get out to other places. I've made sure to do that in my travels and yes, I'm very glad I did. I adore England, from small village to big city. I know that it's a case of grass being greener, and lots of people there would swap me for the mountains of WY. If I could convince my whole family though, I'd gladly switch places with anyone who'd like to. While I realize not all places are wonderful and polite, I can sum it up in just a few experiences. At the Victoria and Albert Theater, my wine was served in a ...glass. Not a plastic cup. Because it's expected there that people won't act like rude idiots. The tube stations don't smell like piss, like the ones in NYC. Riding the escalator standing still on the left side will get you a smart tap on the shoulder and a curt "stand right!" But it's not cursing. It's not a shove. It's just someone annoyed because you are being an entitled jerk not following the rules that make everything operate more smoothly. The US is such a young country, and we have many struggles to endure before we become as civilized as England. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could.

They aren't proper fish n chips in London. You need to come up North for real fish n chips especially at the coast! No mushy peas or curry sauce?! 🫣
