NEW Super Cub - What you should know before you buy !

- With the arrival of the 2024 Honda Super Cub C125 right around the corner, I felt it would be appropriate to make a video about 5 things you should know before buying one. As a Cub lover, these are things I think that I would have liked to have known before purchasing a brand new one.
It took a lot of effort to make this video and I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it! I appreciate and welcome any feedback in the comments.
**This is NOT a 2024 in the video, it is a 2023 with an aftermarket Yoshimura titanium exhaust**

You have no idea how much I appreciate it!

One year ago I bought a Honda XRM 125 in the Philippines. Basically the same platform but much more functional. I paid$1,300 USD out the door for the dual disc brake model. Now at 11,000 km, great little bike. Goes anywhere, up to 90 kph easily one up, 80 2 up, runs perfectly, 65 km/litre. Always makes me smile.
How in hell does a dealer turn a $3700 bike into $5700 rideaway? Robbery.
Thanks for the comment. This is normal dealer mark up! Taxes, tags, title, delivery, assembly, etc. I agree that it’s crazy!!! That’s why I wanted to let people know! :)
Edit: taxes, tag, registration and title alone was $500, I needed it delivered cause the only dealer that had one was really far, then of course the assembly and freight and all the other charges. That’s why many people pay MSRP used for these, because getting one new you pay all the dealer costs. I was willing to do this cause I’m obsessed :)
But this isnt really a negative of the cub since all bikes will have the same or more costs on the back end.
@@batterybuilding The old “you get what you pay for.”
I'm in Australia. It looks like dealer markups here aren't TOO bad, but there are "other fees and charges". Stamp duty, registration, compulsory insurance. Licencing is almost a government SCAM - it costs nearly $500 just to get a "learners permit" (4 hour practical training course), and almost as much again to get a full licence. That's for someone who already has a drivers licence. On top of that there's a combination of COMPULSORY and "recommended" protective gear. I could buy a bike for around $5k (AUD), but I wouldn't be allowed to even push it over the footpath before spending another couple of thousand :( (current AUD / USD exchange rate is about 0.65 - one Aussie dollar buys 65c USD. $5700 US would be $8770 AUD. For comparison, MSRP on the Honda XR150L is $2971 USD. Outright purchase in Australia is $4898 AUD, but then the government want your bank account to ride it on the road).
@@OhSoddit I’ve heard about stuff in Australia being unnecessarily expensive!!! That’s crazy!
There's a reason they've sold over 100 million of these sweet hearts. A Cub was my first motorcycle in the 1960's. Now that I'm in my 70's, it will be my last motorcycle.
Man when you say it like that it sounds so sad!😞
@@Yoshi-Mooch I have been lucky enough to own many more bikes in between, from enduros to standards to a multitude of crazy fast sport bikes to a wonderful Goldwing. Going back to a Super Cub is going to complete the circle. Happy, not sad.
@@RePete02 that is a beautiful way to look at things!
It's one of those ''This can be your first bike, but it's extremely well suited to be your last bike'' type of lightweight, extremely lithe driving experiences.
I own a 1969 (last year of the cast iron head OHV Supercub..) that I have resurrected with a 120 cc pitbike engine. The original engine is pretty worn out, but I tell you what, that new engine "dropped" right into the old mounts and with a change of countershaft to 16T, new electrics, wiring harness, a piece of radiator hose to connect the stock air-cleaner to the new engine's carb and a aftermarket muffler, this bike is entirely different. There are twinges of wistful remembering my old CT-200 and it's lethargic old lump and how well these new engines would have woken it up if available back in the 1970's. Also having 12 volts means the lighting is so much more brighter.
Switching between scenery made this so nice to watch, good sound, and articulate with out too much “in my opinion” or conjecture. 9/10. Would only ask for quick spec run down and top speed check. Great content keep going

Hey duderino, riding a bike without a helmet is a big "no, no". I had 2 accidents, one in '93 where I broke my ankle and one in '94 where I broke almost everything except my head. About 1 year ago I tipped over on my CB750 which weighs 420 lbs and my head simply "tapped" the asphalt, no big deal but if I hadn't had my helmet on I would've cracked my head open. So it's your call but I wouldn't.
I am in 100% agreement with you, I appreciate the comment, and I understand that it is a mistake every time I jump on without one as I have been in accidents myself, I’m not being sarcastic at all. I was literally waiting for the comment when someone was going to call me out, it just took you to do it. :) edit: new pinned comment
A friend lost his son because the kid hadn't bothered to buckle his helmet and had a low speed minor accident coming into a traffic circle.
@@יונתןזנטון In Florida it is not required and it is a personal choice. Sometimes I wear it sometimes I don’t. It is up to the rider. I take responsibility for my own choices and I don’t necessarily endorse riding without a helmet.
I love my Super Cub. It makes me feel like a kid again. You know, when you saw those ads to "motorize" your bicycle, this is what the Super Cub feels like. @@Aka.Aka. They’re all over, but the odds of specifically finding a Cub are pretty rare, I would imagine.
@@Aka.Aka. Yeah, was pure luck as it was from a local real estate tax auction site that happened to have a couple vehicles for sale. Wild thing is that they had it on auction a year earlier and I went to $2800 but they didn’t let it go at that price. Seller has the right to refuse. Got it this time for $1k less!
@@elevenafter haha good work!
Can I ask a really basic question? How did one of the most famous examples of genuinely economic, low cost transportation turn into a $5700 purchase? 😮
@@tm502010 first, it’s not 1958, second there is a lot of technology in this that isn’t in the original super Cub (mainly electronics), third, this is the same engine as a DAX, Grom, and monkey. Those aren’t cheap either this just comes with a territory in 2024. The C125 was never meant to be a cheap commuter bike. If someone is looking for a cheap 125, China is the way to go…. But you get what you pay for.
@@Yoshi-Mooch Would consider Yamaha Zuma over this?

@@NoClutchPH dude! Thank you so much! There is no better compliment!!
I notice that you also own a mid 60's P50, which finding a nice one today is pretty rare, I expect that was expensive too.
The P50 was my first bike and I have a soft spot in my memory for that little true moped.
If you had a local Carter/SYM dealer back in the 20teens you could have picked up a SYM Symba 110 for less than half of that price, but it had a carb and was a little less Super Cub like. You know the funny thing is that San Yang Motors was an early licensee for building Taiwan and SE Asian market Honda Cub clones/C-100/C-50's.. So the Symba has a real Super Cub lineage, moreso than the Thailand Hondas.
You’re correct, P50 wasn’t super cheap either. When I find a new home to buy I’m going to do a full frame off restoration. Secondly, we can talk lineage all day, but at the end of the day it’s still not a Honda. Not trying to be an elitist but endless comments on the page about how I should have bought a knock off/clone or built one myself with a Lifan motor. I wanted a NEW Honda, full stop. Didn’t matter the price. Thanks for your comment. 🙏
@@Yoshi-Mooch Yup no problem, I do just want to say that the Thailand Honda is about as Honda as the SYM Symba..
Not tro be argumentative but because Honda had SYM build their last years of their step-through C-100 and C-50 that were sold here in the states. I own a 1969 C-102 that was made by San Yang, Taiwan isn't mainland China.
I worked 3 years at a Kymco, Genuine and SYM scooter dealer, I can really attest to the quality of these Taiwan made bikes and the Thailand Hondas were made under the same agreement. San Yang Motors was the first of the Honda licensee factories.
Why do you wiggle the ignition like that before you turn it? Why not do it correctly?
I’m just being playful for the video. Don’t read too much into it, friend. :) Thank you for the view and have a great day! 🙏
I'm actually heading towards a Honda XR 150L. Started off looking for a second hand AG-90 / CT-110 ("postie bike" - dual range gears set up for a farm), but they're OLD (need to be a mechanic to restore them?) and attract almost antique value pricing. Honda Trail 125 looked like an option. With further research, everything is screaming at me to go for the XR 150L. It'll do everything the "little" ones (Trail / Cub / Grom / etc) will do - and MORE - and is actually cheaper (MSRP under 3k). Oh, btw, I'm in my 50's, have NEVER ridden (let alone owned) a motorbike, but thinking of one for the farm.
THANK YOU for the vid, it's really helpful for any non-bikers looking at their entry options :)
I SO appreciate the comment. And yes, even if the cub isn’t for you, I hope the video helped with that!
@2:45 is a 1966 Honda P50! :D
If anyone is in driving distance of Ridersville Cycle in Berkeley Springs, WV, you don't get ripped off with fees on top of fees.
Bring it out to Tampa Joe’s on Tuesday night. I’m in Pasco with (7) Grom’s and a yellow 2019 Monkey. I need a Trail 125 next then a Super Cub.
BTW your license plate is epic!
Thanks man! Is it every Tuesday? And damn you have a collection to be jealous of! My next one is gonna be a Honda Dax!!!

Super cub and underbone motorcycles are very common type of motorbike you see here in South East Asia. Its the cheapest motorbike but very durable, efficient and probably will survive armageddon lol. But knowing how America market and culture are so much different, like the expensive entry price point for such small cc engine bike, or their love for big engines, big cities, long roads and highways (I mean look at 5:26 to see how big the highwat is) etc. mean that super cub will struggle there. But I think it's still a great bike for those who stay in small city and town, university town and it's a good bike for UberEat or Doordash food delivery
The funny thing is that isnt a highway or an interstate or anything that is just a normal road here in Florida in a populated area. Your point is well taken about the price point and the roads to drive it on. Some people like to take this bike on journeys but I keep it just on the city roads. Does it also come in Righthand drive ?
A right-hand drive motorcycle refers to a motorcycle where the controls, primarily the throttle and possibly other mechanisms, are positioned on the right side of the vehicle. However, in terms of conventional motorcycle design, most motorcycles have a standard setup with the throttle on the right handlebar and controls such as the clutch on the left, regardless of the country in which they are used.
The term "right-hand drive" (RHD) is typically used for cars in countries where vehicles drive on the left side of the road, like the UK, Japan, and India. It means the driver's seat is on the right side. In motorcycles, there isn't typically a "right-hand drive" or "left-hand drive" distinction like with cars, as motorcycles have a standardized layout for controls.
However, older British motorcycles, such as classic Triumphs, BSAs, and Nortons** built before the 1970s, had right-side gearshifts and left-side rear brake controls. This setup is often referred to as a "right-hand drive" motorcycle in casual conversation, though it's more about the placement of the gear lever than being a true right-hand drive vehicle. After the 1970s, international standardization led to most motorcycles having left-side gearshifts and right-side brake pedals.
This layout is uncommon in modern motorcycles, as almost all manufacturers now follow a standard left-side gearshift and right-side brake setup…. So the answer is “no.” But thanks for the troll 🙏
@@Yoshi-Mooch I actually ment the steering position, so is it also suitable for both left as right driving direction. Like for example the UK and USA

I can get the exact same bike here in Vietnam for about 2000.00 US dollars right off the showroom floor.
Crazy how much you pay in the US for them.
@@GenXoutofamerica Not saying I don’t believe you but the ones I have found in Vietnam new cost 88-89 million VND. Convert that to USD and it’s $3500. So besides our taxes and other fees. @@Yoshi-Mooch Go figure. You're correct. Shame on me for not doing my research.

I still enjoyed the video.
@@GenXoutofamerica I appreciate the comment. I will be the first to admit the Cub is PRICEY. There are many alternatives that are much more capable. Unfortunately, as far as Hondas go in the US we are limited!
The Super Cub's classic style is on par with that of the retro Vespas. It's a beautiful bike. However, the same can be said of the Trail 125, which has a ton more functionality. Conversely, the NAVI undercuts the Super Cub by thousands, yet it offers better storage and MPG. It just doesn't look as cool parked in front of a Starbuck's. Yet another alternative is finding a Rebel 250 in excellent condition for half the cost of the Super Cub

@@SaffronWorldCR thank you for the comment! 🙏 You are completely right about the price thing. I haven’t thought about it that way before. I am going to use this sentiment when I make my video for 5 things you should know when buying USED.
I think you need to shop around man - I bought a 150 Honda Hero Cub in Goa India for $1550 US 2 years ago - stripped it for air freight - cost $180 to the UK - C&E and Rego cost $330 - Don't know what state you are in but I can't imagine it would cost you much more to the US - and the build quality in India is as good as Japan / Vietnam.
@@collyoung6017 So I actually work with importing. It would cost me a ton of time and aggravation. I would have to pay taxes in multiple countries, have it inspected by US customs and immigration as well as Division of motorist services and my local Tax Collectors office. It would be a tremendous amount of work to save not that much money. Some people would say I’m stupid, but if I can afford it and I can drive 2 miles, pay the money l and have it same day it’s worth the money. I have wanted to get a 110 cub from Japan and the shipping alone was worth more than the bike. Also, many people in other countries aren’t not willing to ship or assist with shipping without a tip, bribe or some other fee that they feel they can get out of an American. @@WebikeJapanChannel Well, specifically for the Cub, there were limited numbers given to licensed dealers. To get a one new, you had to pay a premium, which I did. In Japan, the Cub culture is massive with more choices, years and models. We only have the C125. To get a used one, you are most likely going to pay 3500-4000 in todays market, so in my opinion I would have rather paid the extra and have a new one. Neat bike, 25-30cc short of perfection. I feel it needs the extra cc and hp/torque to maintain a continuous, solid 60mph on two lane state highways.
I could not agree with you more! Thank you for pointing this out I’m going to include this in a future video!!!
@@Yoshi-Mooch I have a couple SC's in the area and w/ a 180 rider on board, they can only maintain a steady 55-57mph, hence a oversized diesel truck sitting on their rear. I think this bike with luggage rack and gear could be a great two lane tourer if it only had a couple more ponies. Perhaps a big bore kit might bring things into focus. :)
@@lorimcquinn3966 Big bore is the end game for this particular Cub in the video :)
It would really need a 5th gear, a wider spread of ratios and about 115cc more displacement to be something that could cruise for a distance at 60. 150 cc is going to be tapped for torque at anything above 55 mph.
So I bought my super cub, used it to 2020 and had 9 miles on it when I bought it and I bought it for $3300. No dealer fees just some sales tax and I went and picked it up myself, but I did have to run a truck so that did cost some, so the guy bought it for his girlfriend and his words she was petrified of it well now I have over 5000 miles on it since I bought it and I am not petrified of it buying a used. One might be good idea for me it has worked out awesome.
Oh, yeah!! I’m not against used AT ALL. My issue was when I bought mine, there weren’t a lot to be had and the used ones that were out there were still asking close to MSRP. Glad you got a great deal! Stay safe on your cub, it’s a jungle out there!
@@Yoshi-Mooch yeah I mean some of the ones I was looking at were pretty close to MSRP too and actually had more miles and I’m like no why would I get used one really close MSRP if I can get a new one but then I found the one I found I was like OK yup I think this one will work unfortunately I found out later that had gotten dumped over and somebody broke one of the rear blinkers and the guy use black electrical tape, and tape it back on there instead of fixing it and he did say that there was nothing wrong with it he lied about that one thing but luckily the wires were still attached so what I did was I gorilla glue the thing back on there and then I glued around it so it was waterproof stayed on and then I painted it black so it would pass inspection. Technically, I was not supposed to repair it that way I was supposed to replace it, but I didn’t feel like it and as far as I know it’s still works. I really don’t understand why people think they can sell their stuff for close to MSRP. I mean I get you save the taxes but no thank you I figured with this one. It had sold a few miles on it that you couldn’t screwed up from lack of maintenance, so that was good and, the table light was the only thing that was actually broken. There were no other scuffs or scratches. I don’t know how the man that one. And I recently had to replace the battery in it. He said it was new, but I’m not so sure that it was. I was thinking about getting the trail version of this, but it was like a little more than 1000 more dollars and it didn’t have the gear in the cater. I really really wanted the gear indicator and I’m glad I got it.
@@charleshunt3806 Hey, that is part of the journey of owning a motorcycle! You still got an amazing deal. Enjoy it and treat it good so that if you ever sell it you can be HONEST unlike the person you dealt with! Thank you again for the comments.
@@Yoshi-Mooch so I have done all the maintenance so far except for one thing I had to have the dealer put the new tire on the rim. But other than that, I’ve done everything I replace the chain the front brake pads I put a 65 L locking box and a rack on the back of the motorcycle in the box is waterproof I added side kickstand, I’ve changed the oil quite a few times. I have done the valve adjustment. I have cut the oil change intervals in half because Honda says 4000 but I’ll do it every two at 8000. I’m gonna clean out the oil spinner. So I bought it at the beginning of October of last year and now I have a little over 5000 miles on it over the winter. I ride it all the time 90 to 95% of my travel is on that thing. A change the sprocket out in the front to change the gearing ratio a little bit it turned fourth gear into overdrive and the lower gear so you can stay in longer. I have back up front brakes rear drum brakes two extra rims with new tires on them for when I swap them out so then I can just change the tire and not have to worry about getting another one on the rim immediately. I’m trying to figure out when I need to adjust the timing chain and change that out at some point because I guess with this it’s not like a car at a certain point you have to adjust that change it out every once in a while and change the tensioner along with it, I also have the service manual so that’s been very helpful. I forgot I know I’ve done a few other things to it. so I’m really curious to see how many miles I can get out of the thing while doing all of the maintenance that is necessary and a little bit more but yeah I’m never selling this thing by the time I’m done with it. It’s going to be completely used up. my goal is at least 100 to 150,000 miles. The service manual was pretty awesome. It even has a map of the whole electrical system, but I don’t really think I can do much with that. Soon one of my goals is to put a small front rack on it with another smaller locking waterproof box for the tools that I carry around. I’m also going to run a quad lock cord up from the battery so then I can put power into the battery or charge your phone from the battery but that requires me to take some of the Baker plastic panels off and I just haven’t had chance to do that yet because I cannot have the bike down for too long because except for the few days that I get off I need to ride it every day so projects have to wait until I have time to do themexcept for me, of course that has to be done

But you can import vehicles over 10 years old right?
Just import a used one from japan, they all look the same anyways no matter the age
Infact if you're crazy enough, there's an 190cc crate engine called daytona anima that makes 24hp w/ 5 speed.
They cost about $1200 brand new and is a straight plug and play into the older super cubs (old carburated ones, FI versions have different engine mounts)
@@tristan6509 So just by coincidence, this is related to what I do for a living. Importing as a private citizen is more difficult than you think in Florida. Sure, you’ll pay $1200 for the bike, then you’ll pay $1200 in taxes and import fees then another $1000 to do tags, title, and everything else. Not to mention it has to be inspected by US customs in addition to Florida Division of Motorist services. This process takes months and your bike can be rejected. There’s a reason you don’t see a ton of Cubs on US streets that aren’t sold in America… Because it’s a hassle and almost more hassle than what it’s worth. I could get one that had been imported to another state and bring it here, the problem is, the person who has undergone the import process is going to pass that cost on to the buyer. I know the Cub is pricey in the US. I won’t argue with you. But if one can afford it, then that simply isn’t a factor. :) Have a great day.
