Great Video Catherine! Aside from highlighting the importance of historiography, your editing and creativity add a lot - the tight angle closeup on the opening shot, emulating old submarine films, adding that feeling of claustrophobia!

Great video, and good to see a well researched story on TH-cam. It's as rare as sinking a U-Boat by a merchant ship 😉

Fish and chips! Coming from Grimsby that is dear to my heart. But also, coming from there has meant that for many of us here, the dedication, the courage and the determination of the Merchant Navy. and the armed merchantman, and the trawlers is not forgotten here nor are their losses, in both World Wars. My uncles father in law was lost in an E Boat attack on one of the East coast convoys close to the UK and theirs is a story which seems more forgotten even than the Atlantic or Russian Convoys. Your videos are so valuable and excellently researched and presented.

Very interesting thank you Catherine. My great uncle was in the Merchant Navy in ww2 and was one of the survivors of the Temple Mead

The Merchant Navy's losses included women and boys as young as 14.
As for war movies, I would recommend "San Demetrio, London" from 1944 which is about the crew of a tanker and is based on a true story from 1940.

Another great one, and rightly drawing much deserved attention to the merchant navy and the essential role they played. I had heard that merchant sailors lost pay privileges from the point of the ship's loss, so the sometimes weeks still at sea in desperate conditions awaiting possible rescue was "unpaid overtime". I had a great uncle who was a conscientious objecter who joined the merchant navy and was torpedoed 3 times, twice spending (once more particularly) extensive time before getting picked up.

Below is the original information in German based on the War Diary of the Commander of the U-Boats. They have the opinion that indeed a US warship sunk U 633. They also report that U 633 did NOT sink or damage any ship. The Germans did listen to British and American radio messages. They also had code breakers decoding when possible, and other U-boats in that area. It is nteresting to hear the submariners opinion on that attack as well.

Great deep dive (no pun intended) and analysis of the story. Just reading up on the topic as a result. Apparently, there's a third theory: "Previously in The Post War assessment it was assumed U-633 was lost on 07 March 1943 in The North Atlantic, in position 57 14N 026 30W by depth charges from a British Fortress aircraft of Squadron 220/J."
I guess the Scorton story ties into the British SWW 'legend' of the plucky individual, alone, but succeeding against the odds (like the Barnes Wallis or David Sterling stories), that's become such a part of our identity.

A'reyt Catherine. Very interesting. No amount of operational research done to help beat the submarines would have made any difference without the bravery of those who sailed in the merchant ships.

Damage to the conning tower could only sink a submarine if the damage prevented the rest of the submarine from being water tight.

@@michaelsommers2356 to make the pressure hull water tight you have to be able to close and seal all hatches. So, yes it does.
