Mandy Harvey was in my church’s worship band. I’ve spoken to her on multiple occasions and she is an absolutely amazing human being. She deserves all the praise

This woman is amazing and the fact that she doesn't know how good she is makes it that much better

I haven't owned a TV since 2014 nor have I subscribed to any streaming services so I didn't see that video until I stumbled upon it one day in 2018 - a full year after it aired. I was floored by it... obviously. I've rewatched it numerous times during the 5 years since I first saw it and I still react to it just as you did every time - as if it's the first time I've ever seen it. The sympathy I feel for her even having to be in that situation to begin with is one thing but the joy of hearing her so defiantly triumph over all the shit she's had to endure is so overwhelming - not just emotionally but conceptually. I'm 57 and, like her, I've been addicted to music since I was 4. I used to think I'd seen and heard in my life the best of what was humanly possible... before I saw Mandy's audition. Nothing else even comes close to the way she moved me and has always affected her audience. She's something completely different in music. Her grace, her beauty and her uncompromising tenacity are simply unmatched.
I finally made it a point to buy all 5 of her physical CDs via her web site last month. They arrived last week and now I've heard them all. There are no words to describe...

Update: Mandy was invited to compete on AGT: All-Stars 2023 just a few months ago. She sang an original song from her "Paper Cuts" album.

This is the only reaction I can find online that includes the package video intro and the conclusion. I have to compliment the person who sent it. A lot of the stories about contestants differ from Mandy's in one important aspect. It wasn't that she was poor, or blind, or unable to walk, or any number of things. Her deafness directly affected her ability to gather feedback by hearing her own singing; she's hitting notes her brain is saying are the right ones. And she's right on-pitch. A lot of hearing singers can't do that; many pop singers are flat.
After she had to drop out of school, she was not in a good place for a while. One day, her father told her to try singing, so she said she would work on a song all day and sing it for him so he'd get off her case when he heard how bad it was. She worked for hours that day, using a tuner to get all the pitches where she thought they should be. When he came home that day, she sang it for him, not knowing what to expect. She said he was crying and mentioned it was beautiful. They took the tape of her doing this to her vocal coach, who remarked they could work on getting her current capabilities up to what was on the tape, obviously thinking the tape was made when she was able to hear.
I know the backstory because I bought her book. I adore Mandy. She's not only a one-of-a-kind inspiration, but she's incredibly pleasant and positive. I once responded to a bot sending me a birthday greeting because I'm on an e-mail list. Knowing it was an automated message, I wrote, "Tell Mandy I love her." A couple days later I got an e-mail actually from Mandy, in response.
She didn't win that year, but that didn't matter because the world now knew who she was. Besides her book and three CDs of covers, she's come out with two CDs of all-original songs. The first was called "Nice to Meet You" and the second is called "Paper Cuts." Several are online at her VEVO account.

Your reply here is great to read. I've been a Mandite for 5 years now (I just made up that term to describe me). I bought her book when it was new. I just bought all 5 of her CDs last month. I've found and saved offline countless videos from TH-cam of her performances and interviews dating all the way back to 2011 so far. What I cannot find, however, are any recordings of her from before all of this began. I'm told she was voted "Top Vocal Talent" by her peers during her senior year of high school. Surely somebody somewhere has recordings of her from those days as well. They too would be fascinating to hear, if any exist.

Wow...what a pleasant surprise to get this reply in my in-box. I keep trying to get reactors to play some of her videos. Various ones will do AGT stuff, but it's generally newer stuff or older stuff that isn't Mandy. I actually wrote her webmaster and suggested some of the full-package AGT videos because they just had the edited ones at her site. I think they may have updated one or two. A big loss was when this really zealous TH-camr had every single full-package AGT video at his site, so I bookmarked them. Unfortunately, he took them private. Oh well. It's really nice to know there's someone out there who really appreciates her. Really nice reply I enjoyed a lot. :) @@LordHasenpfeffer

I have just spent the past week solid trying to locate and save every video of Mandy available online. I have found more than I ever knew were available, going all the way back to 2010. I am wondering now if there are any videos of her singing in high school before she lost her ability to hear. I understand she was voted Top Vocal Talent by her peers even then. Surely there's something but I just haven't found it yet. I did make it a point last month to buy all 5 of her CDs from her web site... plus "Paper Cuts" on vinyl even though I don't have a working turntable right now. I *love* supporting her work however I can. I may have a local copy of the videos you say have been turned private. I saved quite a few back in 2018 too when I first discovered her that way.@@christopheryochum3602

I just don't think there's anything out there from high school. If they did record a concert, they certainly didn't post it anywhere. I looked, but everything is more current. And I'm thinking she may have just been a voice in the choir. You know, the guy who posted the full-package AGT videos used his name on his channel, and I could swear his last name started with a "Z." I looked later, and he'd changed his channel name to something more generic. So they were still watchable. But later, he took everything private, which is OK. I can watch the more recent original stuff from her two most-recent albums. My turntable isn't working either. I have to send it up to Canada because there's a really good technician who loves Dual turntables. My automated tonearm doesn't set down or pick up right. I'll get around to it, but it's low on the list.@@LordHasenpfeffer

      Have you seen this? th-cam.com/video/-KGw8K0uPqM/w-d-xo.html
That is by far the *best* live concert performance of Mandy's I've found yet.
It's visually impressive and the audio mix is well-done, too. And her dad joins her onstage for one tune!

9:30 She might have been nervous. That was actually called a vibrato. It's a singing technique where you roll the pitch.

    • @LordHasenpfeffer
      @LordHasenpfeffer 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't think it was nervousness. She does it quite often and I love that. I call them "trills" because they're faster than what I consider to be vibrato. Whatever they're called, they're so beautiful and emotive. I cannot get enough of Mandy's music in my life.

Just checked on a music streaming service, she has several albums out. A later video in the finals she sings a duet with Shania Twain, and even Shania was in awe.

I used to watch this show occasionally and was watching this particular year. Hers is a great story and she did well but didn't win nor did someone else whom I thought should have. I watched the following year but it became more about the interaction of the judges and less about the talent and started to feel more than a bit scripted so I quit watching this show and the others like it. But Mandy's story was special and yes, I did tear up then, and again now. I wish her great success in everything she does and with an attitude like hers I can't see her failing at anything she puts her mind to.
