For my mum the song i sang silently in my head as i watched her face for the last time as she slowly dwindled away. She smiled at me. The kind of smile you don't forget.
Kate lives in Pennistone Barnsley, I took my ex and our daughter to the Halifax gig last night 14.09.12 and it was a pleasure to be there. There is no comparison with any other artist, she is just an incredibly down to earth yorkshire girl who has the gift of making songs in her own way with passion and pride and reworking old songs in a very individual way. Her next album has a track featuring Paul Weller, how cool is that.
Pure, sincere and with proud Northern roots evident in her diction, this simple song epitomises the passion and emotion she engenders in her audience. A beautiful and talented lady; The true Angel of The North. Yeah, okay, so I like her a lot.
My mum used to sing me this when I was about five years old - she had a soft South Yorkshire accent, and I felt the love. . . I’m now 74, and Kate has a similar quality to her voice. . .
Ohhh man. An artist tranforms a song by her loving accuracy and sharp sensitivity. Not one note is oversung, no word delivered without all of its edges. The idea one of brilliance and painful straightforwardness. The effect - devastating and transformative. Thank you so much for this.
A song sung to a sailor who had headed off to distant shores.....before the internet this is how we kept love and memories fresh in each others minds. I know, I was there across the wild blue yonder.. Love the Yorkshire in her voice. Truly great track mastered by Kate
Kate is just brilliant I have not listened to folk music for many years but this song and Who will sing me lullabies brought me back. I have the Leeds DVD and I am off to see Kate in Halifax I will be in heaven listening live to these songs.
It's qite humbling to listen to someone so talented from someone not only from your own town but your own village... Kate is not only so talented that she makes the village of Cawthorne so proud, I speak as one who has moved from her home village to live in France but export and promote Kates music to the masses. Fantastic
There have been so many covers of this song but Kate manages to bring a sincerity to it which is lacking in many of the others. So good, could make a grown man cry.
Gorgeous. Kate Rusby could bring a tear to an eye and a lump to a throat singing her weekly shopping list. Throw in her typically beautiful lyrics and you’ve got no chance of resisting.
She just plain nailed the emotion of this lyric. I wonder what Dean Martin would have thought of this performance? The folksy sound lends itself to the "dreamy longing" of the lyric. The drone adds the sadness....the bright strings....hope. The sweetness of her voice,,,,,vulnerable. Brilliant!
I like every single version of this song that I've ever heard. There are many versions and it's not often I can say i like all versions of one single song. This one is great. In my humble opinion.
We saw her in Liverpool, Phillharmonic Hall, my sceptic brother and I. When he shuts up and listens I know he's impressed. What a talent, what a voice.
Einfach unfassbar schön, ich habe mich in dieses Lied unsterblich verliebt und es ist wirklich die beste Version, die ich bis jetzt gehört habe. Kate ist einzigartig!
Thank you to the person that posted this Discovered this tonight. Was watching a documentary on TVO and decided to find out what the song was on the closing credits which led me to a name and then here to all these songs. How in Gods name did I never hear of her before. I'm just floored. What a find and it's been going on for so many years. Wow. I realy have my musical head up my Country Music ass... The beauty in this music is stunning and she is a great beauty as well. A total combination of... Being, music and voice that only comes along once in a lifetime. Whoever you are lady, you are awsome. I'll be checking out her website and Bio.
My Dad used to sing this to me when I was little..he is passed now but when I hear this it makes me think of you Steven. We have had the best year ......I will miss you dearly.
Magically romantic version of a great song.. Myself and my wife had this played at our marriage ceromony last Friday only!!!! We had it played after our wedding rings were being exchanged.
Not for her, like horse and carriage, sun and sea, love and life. I don't know what you're listening to but you're not hearing anything. This song and her rendering of it are sublime.
I am so looking forward to my vist to the Victoria in Halifax to see Kate, I used to live in Clayton, Bradford, which was in easy reach of Halifax but I live in Rotherham now which is a little more demanding but to hear Kate sing will be brilliant and no chore at all.
Jo Stafford did a superb version in the very early 1950s (and it's probably remembered by her parents) but, Kate nails it here... a sublime arrangement by the musicians. Well done ...
its such a shame she hasnt recieved more recognition shes probably my favourite female singer... and barring maybe louis armstrong i think she has the most emotive voice ive ever heard or will ever heard
Kate is a brilliant musician, I have just seen her Chritmas special in Chesterfield and it was wonderful. She finds songs that are not well known and gets them back into use, She is brilliant, love her to bits
Came across Kate by accident just afew mins ago. all i can say is wow what a voice and what a talent! Just found out she is playing in my town next month, so had to get a ticket! Can't wait to see her live now!
Respect to you Kate. What beautiful music of life and working class people. Respect from the Celtic Pagans of Eire. If you ever need a Bodhran session, give me a shout. Slainte agus Saoirse
Kate just beautiful. You’ve made that song your own and caressed it with you’re lovely voice. You haven’t tried to hide your accent and it’s so warm. My family are from Lancashire and when I hear your voice and that song I’m transported to Swinton to see my Grandad and Grandmother who by the way took no prisoners 😊 Very very well done. ❣️
I love this song.Totally adore how Kate sings it.I searched out other versions of it but return again and again to this one.Its just superb. The total best.Wistfull and longing and captivating.Thank you Elfman for posting this.
My dad bough this song back in the 50's on a 78 by Jo Stafford, I liked it then and still do. Jo's version was Jazzier as was the fashion at the time. I love Kate's version one of her best.
On the strength of this video and a couple of others I went to see Kate play in Sheffield last night and was well impressed. She has a shedload of backing musicians but her singing comes through clearly and it's right what they say about her: she draws the audience in and is so natural in the spotlight you feel as if you're in her front room having a chat. I imagine she's the modern equivalent of someone like Gracie Fields.
What an imaginative and artistic interpretation of this song, much more introspective & whimsical than the manor in which it has typically been presented.
Lovely Kate. So beautiful and talented. Make sure you enjoy your success. An 88 year old fan and a long term supporter. March, 2024.
For my mum the song i sang silently in my head as i watched her face for the last time as she slowly dwindled away. She smiled at me. The kind of smile you don't forget.

Heart piercing music, has an effect on me that I just can't put in words. But it melts me.
My Mum used to sing this. Makes me cry, even now. Damn you, girl!
This song and Miss Rusby were made for each other ... and we get to enjoy the match. GOD Bless her and us all.
Pure, sincere and with proud Northern roots evident in her diction, this simple song epitomises

Truer words never spoken with regards to the lovely Miss Rusby!

I wish my Mum was alive to hear this. She used to sing this all the time. Thank you Kate, you never cease to amaze me with your wonderful talent.
What a gold mine. In America I guess Kate is "just an artists' artist." Who knows why? She is so splendid and could listen all day...
A song sung to a sailor who had headed off to distant shores.....before the internet this is how we kept love and memories fresh in each others minds. I know, I was there across the wild blue yonder..

Can a broken heart be tended by angels voice and sweet lament. Fix my loss dear Kate. Stay close and nurse my soul with peace and beauty. x

Best version of this song. I first heard it years ago and Kate's singing was of great comfort for me... thumbs up Kate.
Brilliant!
