I’ve got so much respect for pilots. Been a jet engine mechanic for 20 years but never learned to fly, much less off a carrier. You guys have to aviate, navigate and communicate all at once. I salute you and your brothers and sisters sir!
You could look into doing maintenance work for your local flying club with your A&P, in exchange for cheap hours. Our club's mechanic flies our planes too.
@@rickbrandon3635unrelated but how has being a jet mechanic treated you? I’m hoping to start as one to gain some experience and eventually become an aerospace engineer; want to go into the propulsion side of AE
@ honestly it spoiled me. I was an airframer for a long time before moving to propulsion. No more skydrol or toilet water. I travel for the job which has its highs and lows. Ultimately work is a 4-letter word and I think it comes down to finding something where you enjoy the actual job and can tolerate the BS. Good luck chasing down your dreams!
On large civil airliners the nosewheel can be a long way back behind the pilot seats. Doing a 180 degree turn on a smaller runway, particularly when there is a sheer drop or water can be really scary as you are actually over the edge of the runway as you turn! Also, there is no tug to push you back if you screw it up! Some modern aircraft actually have cameras so you can see where the nosewheel is, but on slightly older aircraft we had to eyeball it and trust to the geometry we were taught in training.
@@spacedock873 You know, I spent years working on the decks of carriers. I knew our pilots had to have tremendous courage to do what they do. But I never thought about that until you said that. They’re looking down at cat walk and water before they’re making the turn. Requires more courage and bravery than I had to be in the cockpit !
@ Yes they do ! Unfortunately I’ve seen a lot of shipmates get seriously hurt or even worse. The place I worked , the navy trains student pilots. I assure you there’s no other pucker factor I’ve experienced than the student pilot coming in for his or her first ever carrier landing. These ‘kids” for the most part are absolutely amazing. They look like they should be sitting in Mrs. Johnson’s math class but no, they’re flying multi million dollar aircraft onto a floating match box! The thing I enjoy most about your videos is that you show the stuff nobody else does and give us a play by play. Not in pilot speak, but typical language we all use. Truth be told, I literally say out loud while adjusting myself in my Tacoma, "signature move" and laugh out loud. Great jam my friend.
I said it before and I’ll say it again. “Pail you go skills.” Nobody can fly and explain all these moving parts as good as you do. Thanks brother. Stay safe.🥂🧢
My condolences to you also. I know first hand how it feels ! Even though we know you are doing what The Navy trained you to do and what you loved to do and you have given your life for your country it is still unbelievably hard and you never forget! May they Rest In Peace!
Absolutely. As someone who has never been in the Navy nor flown one of these planes, Growler's videos are like a masters level course on carrier flight ops.
That oh so soothing voice is in such contrast to the fear factor of what's actually going on. Glad that plane is in your capable hands, Pail. Fly NAVY!
