John, Use 2” Aluminum Tape over the rivets that are leaking. We use the tape on airplane fuselage. We call it Speed Tape. Use a plastic squeegee or a credit card to secure it to the boat. When you get near the rivet, work around it so as not to puncture the tape. The tape will act like an additional skin on the boat.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Additionally, to build up more thickness (to make the final layer go over the rivet better), take a paper hole puncher to make a hole in the aluminum tape. Two layers should be good enough, then place the final layer over the river to completely seal the rivet. Each layer use the squeegee to press the tape onto the boat. My daughter lives in Cutchogue and she’s visiting me on Friday. I have a roll of aluminum tape if you need some.
Not sure if you attacked the leaks yet……..I would suggest getting some UV adhesive and painting it around the seams with a toothpick. (It’s thick so it will stay in place.) Put a light on it and in about 120 seconds it will be sealed. The UV stuff is clear so it won’t be noticeable…….and it’s a really strong bond. Wont pop off in extreme temperature changes like epoxy……
Good luck with the new boat. Thanks for all your great information. Hopefully your home in Flordia didn’t get to much damage. Good luck with that. What made you go with the Hummingbird brand? Thanks again. David
about your leak problem , I was at a gas station behind guy with aluminum boat about 40 yrs OR older,a boat that a friend of the family had back before REAGAN was president , and I asked him "i know that boats old, How do keep it from leaking"? He told me, , He got a leak around couple of the rivets and that He painted the whole bottom with some kind of epoxy paint and never leaked again ,Then I said you just in fresh water , he answered NO I've USED IN THE BAY ( Chesapeake ) in rough weather ??????
Do yourself a favor get an aluminum welder and have him put a tech beat around all the rivets time-consuming but well worth it you’ll never have another leak
congrats on the boat find, grumman has been making great aluminum products for along time, I still have my 17' canoe from 1970 & have bebuilt or repaired many others the largest a 36' coty shea which is why i am offering help in repairing leaky rivet,s the first indication of a leak is the black stain it leaves, if you let it continue salt deposites will grow on the inside and in the bilge, this will destroy the aluminun.I have repaired many bad rivets by drilling out the old rivet& replacing it with a stainless round head bolt & nut if the area needs a larger fix add a fender washer, the preferred fastner has a allen type head
Best of luck with the new boat John! Are you in the ocean for this video? I have never caught bigger sea bass in the bay but maybe we just don’t have deep enough water. I fish out of Tuckerton NJ.
I was Wrong!!! The new boat is almost perfect. A working man’s fishing machine. Nice find on a classic hull in great shape from the fresh water. Maiden voyage bodes well for the future
I have always used pc-11 water proof epoxy putty on my aluminum boats just mix them up and cover the rivet. Have a 20 year old patch on my aluminum canoe still solid.
I got a 1985 Bluefin Aluminum 16' that takes on about a gallon or more an hour, it's kind of a pain. Watching your last video made me decide to buy a motorless boat and power with my old equipment. I worried a little about selling a leaking boat until I saw you have your boat crushed and you said you wouldn't sell a leaking boat. Made a lot of ethical sense and that's what I'm going to do. I was pulling for you to catch an Albie on your first outing with the Grumman. That's a really nice boat!
Wire brush and JB weld them bad boys very durable it's what I did to all the waterline rivets on my boat lasts years!! Use a clothes pin broke apart as the applicator work fast !!! Small batches!!
Hey John, you are spot on, on not being disappointed with the new boat, you got a year on my 1985 sea nymph 17' cc . Maxed out with 90hp mariner have never been able to open her up all the way. To do it again I think 75 would be ideal. Had my son with me on motor purchase looking over options
He says ok course get the 90. John if there is any chance would love an autographed copy of your new book. Good luck with the new baby, tight lines ....walt
Great, with all the media available today I still love the books. Looking forward with great anticipation to your new books, autographed will make it special. Thanks John. Love the boat !
John, what knots do you use for striper fishing etc? I have your books but I think I only remember a brief reference to one knot. What knot to use on a 50 lb mono leader with swivel and tactical angler clip on opposing ends? What about braid to swivel connections? Thank you John.
Hey John, on the leaks, used a two part treatment called Gluvit, and used the 2 part epoxy I use on building rod to individually cover leaking rivits from below. Use a automatic bilge to take care the little bit of leakage. The Gluvit you put with a roller. Great find on the boat.
Drill out leaky rivet and put a new one in. "3/16 aluminum button head rivet steel mandrel" I use .063"-.125" diameter rivet for my starcraft. Not sure on the grip range but the head is like 5/8 that goes into boat. I bought a pneumatic rivet gun cheap at some tool outlet. Makes job easy. Lots of how to videos on TH-cam.
After the area around the leaky rivets is cleaned and well scuffed, heat the area with a propane torch to drive off moisture and warm the metal. Then fill around the rivets with G/flex 650 Epoxy. Apply heat with a heat gun until the epoxy has gelled.
Any reason why you always go with aluminum? I'm looking into a new boat for the sound and I'm kind of on the fence between glass and tin. I have glass now and it got real soft very quickly.
Hey John , on fixing aluminum boats, in which we do regularly on the reservoirs it's best to hammer the inside down with someone holding a mallet up to the leaking rivet. If you dont want to do that mix up some JB weld and smear it good on the bottom and or cabelas used to sell a epoxy stick that you could heat up and place on the rivet . I would suggest the JB weld stuff its 2 parts that you mix up
Thanks! I'm smiling because I think I've done all of those things at one time or another. I took a quick lazy approach for now - 5200. Will see how it goes.
Dude I love that boat. I would run that out 50 miles np. I'm restoring a 17ft Duo 1968. It's an newer then my 67 starcraft 16 now 😂😆😂. I'm sanding and painting hull in next month
Nice Boat John Glad you got it You were due As we all know the old boat caught alot of fish through the years Knowing you the new one will be even more successful Happy Lines
Congrats on your new boat and new book Mr. Skinner, your videos are as entertaining and insightful as your books. Please don't get me wrong but wouldn't be better to have the lithium battery further away form the gas deposit...just in case?
The thought has crossed my mind, but it's not enclosed and by going this route I was able to do the trolling motor install quickly by reusing all of the wiring. A lame excuse I know.
Rough up the surface of the rivet head and @3/4" around w/150 grit - Clean surface with acetone- use JB weld 2 part stick "metal"- with a putty knife taper back to hull from top of rivet - very waterproof!
John...I am already seeing indents in your hull on top of the rollers caused by impact while bouncing down the road. This will stretch the aluminum plate weakening it structurally and stressing the riveted joints. The weakend structure and stretching rivets will increase and exacerbate corrosion. Spend or make yourself bunks topped with teflon/PVC (NOT CARPET in contact with aluminum) to properly support the hull when travelling down the road. As you know, Evinrude and Johnson are no more. In my 38 years of handling marine claims there is only one engine in all that time that I never handled a claim on...Suzuki. Lots of claims on Hondas, Yamahas, and even more on Mercurys. But there are also more of them on the water. Just what I learned over almost 40 years of marine surveying.
What I ended up doing on my 14 ft aluminum boat 6 years ago when I had a few leaks and rusted out rivets I ended up flex sealing the whole boat and it works the boat is bone dry inside it will make it last longer in saltwater..
Skinner, i have no suggestion on how to fix the leak. but i am reading A Season on the Edge for the umpteenth time! and enjoying it as much as the 1st time. looking forward to your book! congratulation and best of luck with the new boat.

Two things i noticed immediately.. those 4 lug tires are notorious for burning up bearings.. if your not trailering it very far disregard.. also.. if you want to extend the life of your new aluminum boat.. a trick tbe do down here is paint over the bottom with barn paint.. also .. do yoy was your boat down inside and out with freshwater when you take it out of the water?

John, the lighter the line test the lighter the jig head you can use?
The thinner the line the lighter jig you can use.
Why is the lighter rod better for the Albies?
Very nice best of luck to you
If you can afford it have somebody tig weld around the bad rivets

Background language was local Chinese dialect from Fuzhou China. They said: we’re at destination 😂😂
Do you need to drift for this or can you anchor?
I’m a aluminum boat lover myself !!
I had the same hull and it's a monster with a 100HP.

How could you tell you needed to go up in weight to the 1 1/2 ounce jig?

U probably want 1/8 grip. That's same I use (up to .125") should grip the 2 thin pieces of aluminum(hull and stringer).
