    BF2 was definitely one of the best battlefield games they made. The vehicle combat was great, the teamwork and need for certain classes was great. the VOIP between commander and squad leaders, and squads was great. the whole game was amazing. it did have its annoying elements like claymores everywhere. but overall one of the best battlefields. not too long after that it turned into call of duty and it lost that spark that made it battlefield.

    Bf2 air duels were the best. Two helos, two pilots and two gunners - both gunners fire TV missile and the pilots do barrel rolls / normal roll to try and dodge the TV guided missile. The speeds, ranges and map sizes were so much better too.

    Bf2 was a pc game and therefore allowed powerful freedoms. Bf4 is a console game and therefore contains a million automated features to keep incompetent, unskilled players from messing up and getting confused. PC has always been full of fast, responsive simulations in various styles (helicopter flight, city management, etc) while consoles have always been more "user-friendly". There is a universal tradeoff at work here as well. The more potential something has, the more room there is to mess it up and the harder it is to understand. The less potential something has, the easier it is to get into right away. This is why I think every competitive (even non-competitive) game should have a "hardcore" and "casual" mode. Hardcore mode will have truly impressive potential while casual mode is full of easy and friendly interaction. Developers keep trying to merge the two, but there will always be a divide between the lower population of elite players and the much much higher population of new/casual players.
    P.S. - and Casual modes should have autohandicaps(in which the game auto-adjusts its difficulty to fit how well the player is doing. Yes, even in a competitive environment. If you want unfriendly, serious competition then you are looking for hardcore experience and should choose that mode.)
    P.P.S - The Wii U Smash bros. is the only game that I've seen to include a casual and hardcore mode as separate modes ("for fun" and "for glory", respectively)

    • @nemesisurvivorleon
      @nemesisurvivorleon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheGreatUtopiaCat melee will always be the true smash. It's not REALLY coming back though. Nintendo needs to re-add all of the techniques that make melee so competitively viable. Keep those hardcore features in "For Glory" mode and do whatever fun-focused design they want for "For Fun" mode. Everyone's happy.
      Especially if they can get great connections on a regular basis in "For Glory" mode after adding these features.

    I was a sky ninja in BF2 with the speed, maneuverability, and grace that allowed for some extremely skillful flying. 5 minutes into BF3/BF4 and those garbage excuse for helicopters don't even compare. Blades don't tend to break under high G manoeuvres, most of the stress is on hydraulic and main rotor head components. Rotor blades would probably stall before they broke.

    BF2 was so much more skill-based. Jets and helicopters with good pilots could turn the battle completely. Hellfires destroyed everything with one hit, and the jet bombs were also very effective. In BF2 helicopters were used more for destroying armor, but in BF4 at least I just obliterated infantry around flags. Additionally, in BF4, jet vs attack helicopter battles usually turned into a lock-on war, and it would takes minutes for the other to win. In BF2, a skilled jet pilot would down a spotted heli with one strafe, unless the gunner was extremely good with Hellfires.

    My problem with new helicopters started with bf3. It really felt like you were flying a giant bathtub rather than nimble attack helicopters. Bf2 felt far better and free with the looser controls. I generally avoid helicopters in bf4 for that reason. Even transport choppers felt much better in bf2. After getting the hang of it, it was a joy to fly any of them. Not so much in bf4. Bf3 is better in some ways, but i still much prefer 2.

    • @muratisteinkeks
      @muratisteinkeks 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +kibblewibble1 The helicopter shown in the video is in no way "nimble". It's a massive machine flying around. They call it "gunship" for a reason. In a real world scenario no AH-64 would be flying under bridges, between trees or anything like that. They sit somewhere in a safe airspace up to 2km away from anything they attack. Smaller helicopters like the AH-6 can be described as nimble, but even those helicopter wouldn't be able to do most of the maneuvers seen in any battlefield game.

    • @kibblewibble1
      @kibblewibble1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +muratisteinkeks Yeah it wouldn't be seen doing it, but it would definitely be capable of doing it. Even 747's are capable of doing stuff it never do in a real world scenario. I think if an Apache had to, it would pull out some pretty spectacular maneuvers. Besides, its a video game & i was speaking generally to choppers across all 3 games... not making a statement worthy of printing in Jane's.

    Auto centering is more realistic? Someone doesn't know how helicopters actually work. There is a reason it takes a lot of skill and training to be good at flying choppers IRL. It's very easy to lose control of the airframe and enter an unrecoverable situation just due to the nature of how helicopters work.
    BF2>BF4, obviously, for "realism", as if that is a word that can be used for either. Except for the good point about being able to fly sideways.....that's just silly, but part of it being a combat game, and not a sim.

    BF2 heli physics FTW. I miss being able to do barrel rolls while flying under bridges!! And as everyone knows, showing off your mad skills is always more fun when someone is watching(compared to dead BF2 servers). I really don't care if they're realistic as long as it's fun. When they changed the heli physics it definitely made piloting less fun. In my mind, Battlefield has always been geared more toward fun than realism. For example, you wouldn't be able to revive someone with defibs right after they ate a tank shell. There's really no reason to try to make one aspect of the game(vehicles) adhere to aspects of realism if other aspects(infintry) obviously isn't going to. If someone thinks that everything needs to be purely realistic then they should be playing ARMA or a sim anyway. Plus, this is one of those things that and doesn't unbalance the game. Also, BF2 had way better hit registration than BF4. In BF2 when you tank shelled a heli, the heli would at least register it, the tank shell wouldn't impact merely making a *tink* sound to the pilot simply because the heli was moving at the wrong angle or speed! Granted, BF2 did have hitboxes that weren't necessarily on the vehicle models, but at least when you shot them it registered. Every single time.

  • @sackcheck
    @sackcheck 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My best gaming memories were from BF2. Going head to head with another chopper and once you were in T.V range your gunner would release the missile and you would do a barrel roll down into the canyons below, heading back to base for a safe reload. Or sniping the enemy team out of their chopper so that you could steal it from their spawn. Ah, Kubra Dam was a fun map.

  • @fergiy89

    It's incorrect to say that helicopter pilots use a sort of passive auto pilot during flight. Auto pilot is different than how you described it. Auto pilot is not a gyro effect during the pilots input as you seem to describe. Some helicopters have auto pilot but it is not activated with the pilot in physical control of the aircraft, instead, it's used to maintain a particular altitude or heading and to shoot ILS approaches. It's also wrong to say that the BF4 is more accurate to real life. Helicopters do not self right themselves unless an auto pilot is engaged which means the pilot is hands off at that point.

    • @ShadowSix
      @ShadowSix  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm sorry but you're quite wrong in many ways. There are many forms of auto pilot, including stability assist which is routinely activated for the duration of the flight. Please believe I know what I'm talking about.

    • @fergiy89
      @fergiy89 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +ShadowSix Films I'm fully aware there are probably some pilots floating around, you may be one, who knows. (There are others who know what they're talking about as well.) What I'm talking about are military helicopters like the ones portrayed in the game. For example the AH1 Cobra... The autopilot will operate in heading select, altitude hold, navigation (where it ties in with the LORAN long-range navigation system), and vertical trim modes, and can be tied to a slaved electronic horizontal situation indicator. If the pilot needs to take immediate control-for example, while taking suddenavoiding action-any movement of the cyclic control will automatically disconnect the autopilot. The Cobra has the ability during auto pilot to horizontally correct itself, but like I discussed, the auto pilot is overruled and disengaged as soon as the pilot touches the controls which is why I said the way it auto corrects in the game is not consistent with real world auto pilot functions. Therefore when the video said "The BF4 version is more realistic", I disagree based on those flight characteristics alone. The BF2 flight model is technically more accurate where a roll input is not automatically corrected upon control release, whereas the BF4 is simply easier to fly and isn't grounded in real helicopter characteristics. BF4 is another product heading the way of the ease of use model that many games seem to be going. If you'd like to point out my inconsistencies I'd like to know what it is in particular that is incorrect. Thanks for the response.

    • @ShadowSix
      @ShadowSix  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Greg Ferguson Let me first address the fact that your original comment was non type specific, you broadly stated that 'helicopters' don't used any sort of passive auto pilot stability function during hands on flight. That is categorically false, because most modern helicopters do.
      You've then gone on to state some very specific facts about the Cobra, including some higher mode functions, which has nothing to do with what we're talking about here. Now I'm not familiar with the finer details of Cobra autopilot systems, but I'd be amazed if being a modern (in it's latest itiration) military helicopter it didn't have some sort of SAS.
      But that's more or less irrelevant, because as helicopters in BF4 and other BF titles don't have individually modelled systems, we have to talk about them in broad terms, and talk about the general feel and handling characteristics in broad terms. So when you say the BF2 flight model is technically more accurate, I'm afraid you are wrong.

    • @fergiy89
      @fergiy89 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +ShadowSix Films Well in broad terms of military aircraft and more specifically Rotor-wings they have no system where an auto pilot takes over the moment the controls are released. It's the same way for all aircraft. So what I said originally is still true. For this to happen, a pilot would have to release the controls then immediately turn on an auto pilot. That switch is not automatic... If it was that would be a major safety concern.
      The only instance where an auto pilot is toggled on immediately after release of control is before landing or after take-off. So yes, as it stands, BF2 is still more accurate of a flight model than BF4. Under combat conditions a pilot will in no way whatsoever release full control or partial control to an autopilot. The thought of that is ridiculous and hinders the ability of the pilot to maneuver the aircraft as needed on very short notice. Again, it's depicted in this way in BF4 not as accurate, but as easy to use for the gamer. Nothing more, nothing less.
      I don't really know where you're basing your information from, but I applaud you for sticking to what you said in the video. You'd have to remake the video if you had changed your mind. Just so you know my information comes from my face to face contact with Army pilots on a daily basis who fly one of three aircraft; AH-64 Apache, AH-60 and/or HH-60 Blackhawk, and CH-47 Chinook. I've also had the privilege of flying in Army helicopters and know what they're capable of. I see these aircraft fly daily so when I see someone say something odd, I have to at least voice what goes on in the real world so the average user, or BF4 enthusiast isn't thrown off by nonsense.
      On what grounds can you say BF4 is more accurate? Based on the google search of auto pilot systems? From where I stand you either don't understand auto pilot systems and how they function, or you're just formulating an opinion behind a keyboard without real world experience. You've given no solid information on how you're correct, you've only stated that I am wrong, which is a mistake.

      +Greg Ferguson I think the problem here is that, and with the greatest respect, you have a fundamental misconception about the function of autopilots, which is not uncommon. More specifically, the function of autopilot stability augmentation, which is what we're talking about here. SAS works when hands are off, and more importantly, when hands are on. It's a system that's engaged throughout the flight of the aircraft, to reduce the inherent instability of helicopters, and thus reduce pilot workload. It's purpose is not to always to take on full control of the aircraft.
      If you take your hands off the cyclic in a helicopter without any sort of autopilot assistance, both in hover and forward flight, even if perfectly balanced at the point of release, it will stray from it's original position, and indeed accelerate until aerodynamic forces take effect. In forward flight this translates into an increasingly dramatic oscillation if left unchecked, and eventually, a fiery ball of death on the ground.
      Autopilots are there not only to provide hands free complete authority for alt, speed, approach profiles etc, but also to reduce this instability that would otherwise require a certain amount of concentration to overcome.
      Stop thinking of autopilots as purely an auto flying ability that has to be removed by the pilot before he can control the thing. It's much more complex than that.

      I don't see how older BF games were more complicated.
      Alright, there was no auto health regen, no 3D spotting and BF2's commander system was much better because all the commanders assets were actual objects on the Battlefield to sabotage and the commander was a player on the battlefield aswell so both teams could always have one at any time, but even if the modern BF's did that, it would still be "Simplified" in your point of view, right?

      I like how you just listed a lot of things they simplified in the newer BF games and then go on to act like its not simplifying at all.
      Did it ever hit you that one can simplify mechanics too?
      Also infantry movement in BF2 is way more real than in BF3 or BF4 where you can run around like you are Sonic the Hedgehog despite having 25kg equipment on your ass and wielding a very heavy assault rifle.
      Yup, nothing wrong there amiright? And they still classify themselves as military shooters?
      I mean you can deny it all you want but this is reality, and we all know why they do it, its marketed towards kids, BF1942 and BF2 were generally not very popular with kids, but it was with teens and people in their 20s.
      Why you think games sell so much today as they do? Because of kids, why do you even think consoles still exist, well kids.
      There is a very good reason why cellphone 'games' if you can call them that, outnumbers console and PC gamers massively, because these games are designed to be dumb, and when they are dumb ordinary people can easily play them.
      You know I am right, otherwise Europa Universalis IV would be selling like hotcakes right now but its not, Civ VI is doing that instead despite them both being strategy games, but one is far simpler than the other to play. Not that Civ VI is a bad game, far from it.
      Battlefield 3 and 4 are not bad games, they are just bad Battlefield games.

    BF4 is "trying" to be more realistic with regard to taking damage whilst upside down, very few helicopters can actually do a full loop without ripping off the rotors outright (a lot when doing a loop you will notice don't actually go fully upside down they tilt a tad so they're not fully upside down) I know the british lynx can do it. It was a good idea but very poorly implemented e.g constant health damage personally think it would have been better warning came through on the avionics and then just ripping off the rotor if you ignored it (would have been interesting if they added helicopters that could pull that off and others that couldn't to mix it up a bit)

    I just wish helicopters be way more faster and response to the angles, i liked how they did it in Project Reality modification to BF2, it was really hard to fly these things but once you got it, then it was really fun to use and it looked good from ground. Also jets could be faster and change flying physics to avoid these stupid oval battles which two pilost trying to get each other making those circles... thats kinda stupid i didnt see that kind of crap in any other game. But most important thing is weapons? Make limited amunition, so we would have to go back to base to refill, also make this ammunition usefull, in BF3 i was able to kill an enemy troop on the ground with main cannon, in BF4 they made it nearly impossible, and even if you manage to hit someone it does really small damage.. i mean cmon its freaking JET wih BIG cannon, this thing shoots like 1000rpm or even more, with bullets size of a whole ak47? look at the bombs in bf4, what kind of bomb is that?

      ***** Oval battles happen because the planes are exactly the same with a different skin, play war thunder and the planes perform differently e.g Japanese zero excellent at turning, but much slower than most other nations planes, and performance drops off at higher alt. So in that situation you play to the zero's strengths stay low alt and try to catch the us planes out if they make a mistake with their boom and zoom tactics, in bf ALL the planes have the exact same stats so its like trying to fight someone with a plane with the exact same stats. If they were to have the planes behaving accurately the Russian planes should be FAR more agile than the US jets

    If you WANT to know why there is a limit to the degree rotation in helicopters, not all helicopters are able to do acrobatic flight. If you try to fly certain helicopters upside down irl, it will simply not do it (Namely semi-rigid rotor systems like the HUEY, the COBRA, and others). In fact, the dive that you can do in the cobra would likely kill you and the co-pilot by the full forward deflection and the hazards that would be put in because of that, but that's a video game and I don't think any developer besides full sim stuff would even worry about it.

    I felt like the controls felt less sluggish in BF2. I used to be able to put the chopper into a circular strafe pattern and let my gunner unload on the enemies. BF3/4 edition of the chopper tend to drift forward possibly because of that auto correction being done so it becomes more of an oval pattern where I constantly have to correct the chopper much more as she's auto drifting forward. I also remember the turning radius being tighter in BF2, if I pushed on the stick lightly it turned with the sluggish feel BF4 has at max stick. If I pushed the stick hard it would scream through that turn much faster.

    Interesting. Watching this I thought about flying a drone. many have a GPS assisted flight mode which like B4 returns the drone to normal when you let go of the sticks. you can also switch to manual mode which gives you complete control and like BF2 requires equal input in opposite direction to return to "normal". future BF games should consider giving the pilot the option of manual mode or assisted flight. this would help meet people's demand for a better or different flight experience.
