Am I the only one who doesn't love Kurosawa's film "Dreams"?

  • I might upset a few film lovers with this review. Akira Kurosawa's 1990 film "Dreams" is a visually impressive classic but this film just didn't do it for me. I break down a few things that bothered me about this late entry in director Kurosawa's filmography. For a movie about dreams, it seems too structured and I wished that it was more abstract. To be honest all of the vignettes in the movie Dreams are great and the message of the film is fantastic, especially the messages about environmentalism. I personally just expected more from this great director.
I'd love to hear your opinion in the comments.

I love Kurosawa, so I pretended to like Dreams, but I don't and never really got it.

Kurosawa never made a bad film, but he did make a couple that I don’t really want to watch more than once

I'll have to rewatch, but do agree it's almost as if his old age maybe lead to some compromised decision making, as well as being a benefit to how unique it often looks in its colour. I also expected something a lot more mindblowing based on a lot of people I know's reactions, so I get the harsher tone of the review especially with it being Kurosawa. I think Japan alone has many examples of similar movies that tackle this kind of concept better, but again maybe I'm wrong and missing the point.

It is true though that the look of the film is very impressive and some of the images that he creates are extremely unique. In particular, I'm thinking of the soldier's ghosts all coming out of the tunnel.

I hated Scorsese cameo too! I hated the entire Van Gogh sketch. I just couldn't understand why this is here. If the film is about Kurosawa's dreams then I am sure there are more to choose from. Why this? Not everything surreal is interesting.
This film felt really long. I kept watching it in hopes that it will eventually make sense!

I find it to be visually very similar to Ran.

I agree that visually it’s fantastic, but I just wanted more from the story, I think Ran is close to a perfect film in many ways, so maybe because of the fact that the visuals are similar, I had a bit of an overly critical eye when watching Dreams
