    The flower design on the metal plate covering the knot is of course the Japanes national flower, the Carnation. It is good to have that little strip of wood or leather at the front to prevent wear otherwise the front end will wear to a sharp edge and start to split long before the Ha are worn down.

      The Japanese national flower is the Chrysanthemum. :/

    Theres nothing like the clatter of two tooth geta on a stone road. The Japanese are so refined, beautiful.
    Thanks for the review.

      The Japanese have an onomatopoeic word for the sound... karan karon (garan goron).

    Geta are not supposed to last a long time. They are meant to be used and abused. It's OK to wear them for about two or three years and throw them away. The wood is called "Kiri"... something like balsa wood only harder.

    • @rosenyne
      @rosenyne 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kiri (Paulownia wood) is used in geta because it has a very tight grain, doesn't splinter, and is extremely light. It also doesn't warp as much as other types of wood. It's not actually very durable, but easier to cut, shape, and wear than denser woods.

      @@rosenyne it is also a very fast growing tree, straight and not much branching of the lower trunk. Not native in many countries.

    I'm just thinking that back in the day they would walk mainly on dirt roads. Now it's mainly tarmac; that wears the geta down much faster, of course.

    I bought geta today in Kyoto and walked around in them with my yukata for 7 hours (my first time wearing geta). I was worried about the wear and tear, but you've helped put my mind at ease. I wish I was as lucky as you, because somehow I managed to have a two centimeter sized chunk taken out of the side of one of mine. Overall, it took a few hours to get used to the gait, but those acupressure points being stimulated were well worth it. I wish I could wear them to work!

      I'm glad you were able to enjoy them! Personally I don't mind the dint and scratches, as that gives them character and shows they're actually being used instead of just bought for display.
      Thanks for watching!

    can anyone get a hold of a diagram that shows proper placement of the teeth for sandals of different sizes? I'm trying to build a pair from scratch because I'm an american size 13.

    I love wearing mine. I love walking bear footed. The geta let me wear nice shoes with a beautiful sound and get the feeling of walking bear foot on a wooden floor.

    I'd like to know exactly where does your feet go on top of them, I need to make one for a theatrical play and I didn't know the heel position. Also, how are the teeth connected to the wood, is it glue or screws?

    • @wageofsins
      @wageofsins  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sure no problem. This video is a great example of the start to finish process of how they're made, from a single block of wood th-cam.com/video/e43-aZXJBXI/w-d-xo.html and this diagram shows you the heel position wafuku.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/getawear.jpg?w=620
      Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

    It's super to see people making geta but not wearing kimono-like a vegan making real cheese lol

    • @wageofsins
      @wageofsins  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      night time hermit Traditionally geta could be worn with many things, not just kimono. Of course they were paired with yukata, but also worn by farmers, shop keepers, and as Japanese culture started to mix more with Europe and the West, even suits. They're very versatile.

    Lots of good information here. I am curious as to whether one's feet ache after wearing them for prolonged periods, especially walking on pavement and other hard surfaces. I'm remembering some wooden platforms I had back in middle school that were just fine until the end of the day, and then it felt like I'd been jumping up and down on concrete barefoot!

    • @wageofsins
      @wageofsins  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, after walking in them all day it was surprisingly comfortable. I think you just have to make sure you have a good quality pair with proper straps, that way they don't dig into your toes. The bottoms of my feet were surprisingly soft feeling after actually. I'm not exactly sure how to explain it, but I guess it's like walking barefoot in your house all day.

    Why do the put dowels in the rear tooth?

    • @thomaseland3136
      @thomaseland3136 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the paulownia wood is quite soft and the traditional Japanese method of cutting them with a bandsaw from a single block of wood means that the grain runs horizontally. Therefore the 'Ha' can snap off. The dowel gives a bit of extra strength. I make mine with the Ha being a seperate block of wood (I use pine) and glue the Ha on so the grain runs vertically which is stronger and lasts much longer before wearing down.The glue is stronger than the wood so will not break easily.
