  • Why would I live in a tent year round when I could just build a cabin? Why don't I have solar panels? Why don't I dig a well?
While running the chainsaw mill to make lumber for an upcoming gazebo, I take the time to answer some of the most commonly asked questions from the comments as well as some from Patreon.
Because I’ve gotten so many questions about the gear that I use on the channel, here are some of the most important pieces I use every day:
How I Keep the Mosquitoes Away! amzn.to/3frenvh
My Favorite Piece of Gear- Chainsaw Helmet amzn.to/3uuW5xB
    Granberg Chainsaw Mill amzn.to/3cdRXvn
    Big, Black Log-Peeling Knife - Becker BK9 amzn.to/3oZIeOH
The Trailer I Use Behind My 4 Wheeler- Yutrax amzn.to/3fvO8DK
Bug Net Rooms I Use amzn.to/3uwOK0l
Heaters in My Tent and the Deer Castle amzn.to/3frQ7Jh
Thank you all so much for supporting this crazy endeavor! Without you folks donating to Surviving Ringworm, I wouldn't be able to even consider staying out here in the wilderness a second year making videos. You seriously blow my mind!

Just don’t ever change!! We’re watching cause you’re so sincere and being ‘the boy’ even us older tomboys, wish we could be. Every day you’re still being the kid we wish we could all be. Yours is the most refreshing, candid, sincere vlog I watch! I love when you ‘talk’ to us, like “pick up our end of the board” to no avail 😩🤪. You brighten my day whenever I see you’ve posted.

Well put! I really like all this and how it's not commercial "influencer" thing trying to sell me something. I live in Finland and the forest and the climate is very similar here. That makes this even more awesome👍I also love how mr. Ringworm has made fully conscious choices between work, comfort, money, free time and responsibilities. That is the most important thing.

My wife and I enjoy watching your videos. My thinking has always been ,keep productive every day. Your doing a great job of that. We some how got old and we can't do what you are doing ,so where just going to watch you. We laugh alot to, which is always good 👍. Wondering if peanut butter sales have increased. We built a deer stand which turned out to be a dear stand. Then we built a tree house up there. 18 ft off the ground, with a handicap ramp to get my lawn mower up there. We go up on the dear stand every night for a year and a half with the four dogs to sleep. If I new how to send a picture I would ,but born to early. Don't want to waste my perfectly good brain to figure it out. Have fun!

Growing up I lived on an island , my parents had waterfront property. I loved to be outside and sleep outside so just started sleeping outside every night all summer. On rainy nights I pulled my sleeping bag under cover. I fell asleep watching shooting stars and ferry boats all summer for many many years . I totally understand your loving sleeping in a tent rather than in a building.

One of the best years of my life. Zero rent, Showered at my parents or work, Food was what i could cook and keep in a cooler. Thanks for the video; your efforts are appreciated and I think I'm beginning to get the drift of where you're "at". The only advice I can pass along is simply "DO IT" until it isn't fun any more. The dog is a good idea, I think. Just remember the Bernese don't live a long life so prepare mentally for a heartbreak. I don't mean don't get one. I'm on my seventh dog now (a ten year old Basset Hound) who is a rescue. I moved to the "sticks" thirty one years ago on an old run out farm and woodlot. I'm setting up a bandsaw mill mostly because I have a lot of dead standing and dead-fall spruce, but the chainsaw mill works good and is somehow satisfying just to see that board or timber happen. I'm 77 and if you think of it, let me know what I should do when I grow up.

    • @survivingringworm2202
      @survivingringworm2202  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ya know, I'd just suggest that you keep on doing things as you are. Eventually something will inspire you to grow up. I bet 40 or 50 years from now, you will be tired of having fun and acting however you currently like to act.
Yup. Just wait for a sign from the gods. Maybe it will come while you are milling up all that spruce.
      That's MY plan anyway.

    • @survivingringworm2202
      @survivingringworm2202  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

And yes, it's too bad Berners are so short-lived. By the numbers, one of the shortest of any breed. It's the only negative I can think of for them tho.

How about building a moving target for your range, is that possible? Also how about making a wish list of machines or chains that you want where we can buy it or put money towards it for you, kinda like a registry.

Ringworm, Amen! I think what your doing is really holistic! And I think your living an honest, and simple life. I do the very same thing, by reusing and recycling what I have. I live in a very rural town in virginia on top of a mountain and I'm doing alot of the things you are doing. It's really fun and I get up in the morning ready to get my day going. I learn alot from what your building and take some of your ideas. Im gonna build your deer blind next! I love the exercise, fun and the peaceful nature and animals around me while I'm on my land. I too live on very little, so I keep my costs down. It is, it's fun and a joy to do your own agenda and do it your way! So I'm watching and learning!

I totally agree with your comment on chainsaw milling vs. Band saw. I found your channel because of chainsaw milling. I've been doing chainsaw milling for a couple years now, and haven't sold or used a single plank...I just love to open up a log and see what's inside! (All my milling is on trees that have been cut or fallen already.) But I'll soon be building a picnic table based on yours, and will be using your "cut and skootch" method a lot.

Another great video. It is nice to hear a lot of your answers, even if the seem pretty obvious to me, but then I am not everyone else. I watch you and most of the folks I follow is because of your ideas and your outlook on life. I’m sorry that this is a why don’t you comment but… if you don’t have a wood chipper I would think some tree service in your area would be happy to drop off a load or two of chipping next to your gravel pile if you wanted to chip dress some of your trails. I mean, you obviously have plenty of free time on your hands so another task wouldn’t hurt, hell, who needs to sleep. I didn’t realize that you used to be in San Diego. I grew up in lower Michigan, my family were homesteaders in the U.P. So I know the challenges you face on a yearly basis. Tough winters. Being a wrestler I’ve survived ringworm more times that I can count. It’s just athletes foot of the body, goes away with cream. My point is I stumbled upon your channel and it’s amazing. I also bought property in 08 in a temperate rain forest in Washington state. What you are doing is showing me what is possible with little money but many resources. We have a river and a tree farm on the property. The trees are real big, spruce, Douglas fir, big leaf maple, western red alder. I wanna be like you but society seems to keep me from doing it. Any tips? I still live in mich, but spend summers out there.

Thanks for being who you are and not the conformist too many in the World expect too many of us to be. I'm (we're) not like them!!! I've watched so many bushcraft channels and every one does stuff a little different. One person chooses to use a knife when a hatchet would work much better as a tool and time saver. If it works for her, then more power to her because it makes her happy. I've learned so much from all I watch, some of which I follow, but you have struck a chord with me and I applaud you! As they say in the hood, Keep it real and continue to show us a way to do things that are slightly out of the box. I can't wait for your next vid!

Where I am building my cabin it is the same! 1 foot than Canadian Shield. A well is $10,000 to $15,000 so we couldn’t do it. Instead we dropped the height of water in our pond than dug a hole beside it. Put in two well tiles. Back filled with gravel and sand than returned the pond it its previous height. We pump the water from it to a cistern by the house. It’s not portable however but runs the house. We have to drive 30 mins to get potable water.
Our solar system cost is $20,000. However is bare bones system and couldn’t run a normal sized house. Solar systems are very expensive. It pays for it self here because hydro (power) deliver costs are outrageous. $25 a month electricity use cost will have a delivery cost of $75! 😳

I know I'm still a year out on videos 😂 but I don't like skipping ahead but I was wondering if you ever built you a pantry just for food storage that is up high enough for big animals not to get into. That way it would be almost like going to the store to get food but from your own stockpile. Then people could send you different kinds of food, from other countries too, maybe. Or a lifetime supply of peanut butter 😂. The build would be great even if you don't have a ton of food to store in it ☺️

Wonder if I could get a 5 gallon bucket of cheap wood sealer somewhere that doesn't have any tint and just slop the ends of everything I've put together so far.

Does your state have a clause where... you can have a well without a permit if its under like 20 feet or something like that? Many states require a permit to do wells... BuT there's a catch where they actually specify only needing a permit if its over a certain number of feet deep in. Your state should have a low water table (low as in close to surface).

On the subject of solar. idk if your interested in sponsorships. But the company jackery has some really nice stuff for off grid living. and they will sponsor smaller channels. i fallow a guy who has less subs then your channel and he got a sponsorship from them. And all he did was reach out to them and they sent him one of there kits for free and only wanted a review of there product. He didn’t think they would sponsor his small channel but they did. and he only tried because his subscribers suggested it.. and he thought the same thing about solar in the woods is pointless he’s up north in Canada. But the nice thing about jackerys products It’s portable so you can fold up the panels and take them anywhere and move them or charge the battery pack with ur generator. There not 100% reliant on sun light. Idk just a suggestion. Might be something to look into. I mean the worst they could say was no.

    • @survivingringworm2202

      Hey John.
I've been told that Jackery does ship a lot of free product to channels to test/review. I've considered it but I don't really want my viewers to have to watch product reviews on this channel when they can be found so readily on almost every other outdoor channel. Plus, like you said, I'm not sure how I'd even recharge the thing unless it charged really fast from the generator. Doesn't make much sense to run the thing for 8 hours just to charge up another battery. Maybe they do charge quickly?
      I'll do a little more digging/reading.
      Thanks for the ideas.

    • @johnrobinson8955

@@survivingringworm2202 it depends what battery and solar panels you have if your charging off straight solar it’s slower. The generator will charge it fast like a couple hours. even in low sunlight solar still works just not to it’s fullest. I get it not wanting to do a review i don’t know what they ask for on the review side. I do know the smaller channels just mention what kit there using and use it. It wasn’t much of a review it was more like hey jackery sent me this solar and battery kit for free to use in my videos. And they just used it..
