Thanks for posting this. 15 years ago I lived in Atago Towers in Tokyo and begged the attendant to let me sit in the car to see what it looked like inside. The days before camera phones were so easily available.
That's pretty neat! I never imagined the garage would basically have one robotic sled permanently assigned to each level. Seems like a good thing for efficiency reasons, at least.
I wonder how it handles snow melt & salt runoff from cars above. I noticed a lot of fastened girders with what looks like corrosion resistant coverings, but it's hard to tell. 1000's of cars a day in during winter dripping salt laden water onto vehicles below and the support systems.
Well, since Tokyo doesn't use road salt, that's not an issue. In reality, Tokyo doesn't treat the roads after a snowfall. The snow just packs down until it naturally melts, with the city restricting road traffic to vehicles with chains until it's melted. The city only gets 9.5 days of snow every year (in the past 75 years they've only had 9 or 10 days per year), with only a small accumulation over that entire period from November to March. There have only been 6 years in those 75 where snowfall totals have been more than 15 cm (6 inches), and so there really isn't much need for the city to pay out for clearing and treating the roads.
@@InuKun2008 here in the UK there are lot of cars driving around that have been imported from Japan, because they’ve been well looked after over there and are usually in a far better condition than their UK equivalents. The roads here are salted pretty much any time the temperature gets close to freezing, so unless you’re prepared to pay for corrosion protection, rust will always be an issue with UK cars. With the Japanese imports, you generally don’t have to worry about corrosion.
This is really mind-blowing! The thing that I am wondering is if this system can be sped up, because the cars are moving pretty slow on the track, probably due to new technology, but if this can be enhanced to have faster speed, this would be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Perhaps that is why these car-parks aren't (To my awareness) common in the UK or United States. There was an experimental garage of this type in Edinburgh many years ago but it failed financially, and I wonder how often they had to retrieve cars just so the owners could retrieve „accidentally“ forgotten bits 'n' bobs?
One question : what happens if you realize that you forget one tiny little thing in your car? You have to wait like an eternity to have your car going through all the process?
This leaves me with many questions. What if someone forgets to put the parking brake on or the owner never comes back, i would imagine its impossible to tow a car out of there
If the parking break is not applied the operator will not signal the car to be stored until the owner has done so. Also a computer program likely keeps track of all vehicles, if one is left for too long the computer will alert the operator to have it removed for towing.
Lock doors, get out of vehicle. Either that means you have to lock the doors & then get out (impossible) or lower your antenna from outside (either try to push the button & look stupid or do it manually & break your antenna). I can't bear to think how expensive it would be to park there.
There's an announcement that specifically says not to forget anything that you need. "Wasuremono naiyo go chuui kudasai" literally means forgotten items careful please.
If this loading and unloading system could be adapted for train cars, every train could be an auto train. Drive to the train station and board the train while your car is loaded. Get off at your destination and drive away in your own car a couple of minutes later.
Ever heard of an autorack train car? Many freight railroads use them to carry new cars from factories. Amtrak, America's passenger rail service, also uses these on the auto train. They have 2-3 levels and are loaded via an adjustable ramp.
Saying that, this could be the notion that might make Motorail work in the UK. We had that years ago (When taking the train was _much_ quicker and more reliable than driving) but a large aspect of inconvenience was the load/unload process, and once cars became more reliable people abandoned the service and it was ceased. The only hold-out was the Motorail cars on the Night Rivera (Which were loaded via forklift) but with the UKs very limited loading gauge making ramps and „drive-on“ facilities difficult to implement, this approach is probably the most practical which could be used! 👍
this is so cool. decking the cars like this uses the space very well. What if the parking algorithm jumbles up, is there any method to locate ur car manually :)
kirilltmo roblox no it didn't, it said "Kēdō kō kōshi mas, kōdō kada kasai." Which means "if you are still in your vehicle, honk and staff will rescue you soon."

well the government can subsidize this sort of thing. It might actually be beneficial to the economy because in Manhattan where they do not have any space they can build this sort of thing underneath a building and that means that you have more space to build on.
That's such a cool feature why have we not got that here in Britain or anywhere else in the world. In fact here's a good question is there anywhere else in the world that has this feature?

It's Japan, it does not get mixed up :) But if you loose your ticket, they naturally have cameras tracking where cars are so they can pint point yours and call it back.
It's interesting to see that the parking bays where the cars are stored are illuminated, you'd think they wouldn't need lighting down there because nobody should be in the parked vehicles. Unless of course the lighting is for security cameras, but if that's the case, wouldn't they use infrared cameras?
It looks like the structure and mechanics take up more space than simply making a multi-level parking garage, though... There's so much space that's unused.

yep. I bet you won't leave something again after the first time
Very impressive! We have few of these in London, maybe 2-3 in luxury apartment blocks in town where the parking is extortionately high.
Which is what Roppongi Hills is. A series of luxury offices and apartments, with a few public amenities to bring tourists in.
Imagine if self-driving cars and these car parks were linked it would be epic. Maybe in 10 years?

That was just absolutely amazing!!!

I even bet it was worth every penny to build it but if it were to break then it would probably take a few months to fix
this is Japan, would only take a few hours / days.
looks like umbrella corp. or aperture science.
Imagine in portal 2 where you would see cars be moved all around the place above you xD
It reminds me of The Matrix, with cars instead of people in slime baths.
Why does it remind you of the military group from resident evil?
What about car alarms?
What if you leave your wallet in your car and you need to get it?
The Japanese do not leave their wallet in the car lol.
You quickly learn not to leave your wallet in your car!

There are more simple ones, this one seems to be very complex
