Thanks for making this video. I have been struggling with finding my purpose and looking for my "passion" and trying to make my job my passion. This also extends to the lack of motivation I feel when I work. After listening to you, I realize I have been looking at this all wrong. So, I am going to do an experiment. For 1 month starting tomorrow, I am going to put my nose to the grindstone and finish writing that book I have been putting off along with the code I need to finish for my current project. After each work day, I am going to reflect on what I learned and what I can do better tomorrow. Each time I find myself feeling miserable or complaining, I will instead ask what the current experience is teaching me. I wrote a note to give an update 1 month from now. I will let you all know what happened.

I'm old. Not 'Rudy old', I'm really old, 68. I never made more than $40,000 a year in my life. I've had more than 40 jobs in a number of different fields. I've lived on 3 continents in 5 different countries and visited many more. I'm from the US but I've been living in Europe for the last 25 years. I've also lived in Japan and Korea. I've lived in foreign countries for almost half of my life. I've seen and done amazing things and met amazing people. I currently live in a small but very nice house with an inground pool and a beautiful Japanese garden. I've been on the verge of being homeless more than once in my life but I always found a way to survive. I've lived life my way and I would do it all over again and not change a thing.
If you want to be like Rudy and think the only measure of success in life is having a lot of money then go for it. But in my opinion there is more to life than pursuing wealth. That comes with it's own problems.
Take a risk, follow your heart and your passions. Most of all don't be like Rudy who is always concerned about what others think about him. Grow a thick skin, develop some self confidence and be who you want to be not what other people want to be. You only get one life, why not make the most of it. If you crave comfort and security go for it. If you want a life of adventure then do that. Being what you need to be is the true key to a happy life. Relentless pursuit of money has been ruining the world. Don't let it ruin you.

    • @WormAteWords
      @WormAteWords หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Fair enough, but I don't think Rudy cares too much what people think of him. He has often produced some unorthodox statements about investing because he carved his own path outside of the standard investing world, despite his detractors.

I love to fish. I grew up on the Lake Erie shoreline and I fished in the lake, small local lakes and I di da lot of trout fishing in the streams south of the lake. I was on a charter boat trip on the Baltic sea a few years ago and caught a fish of a lifetime. A 44 pound, 48" Atlantic salmon. It took over 45 minutes to get it in the boat.
Rudy is a good example that money can't buy good taste. He lives in a big ugly McMansion full of tacky furniture and art. I've lived in Europe for the last 25 years now and I love art of all kinds. I've been to a lot of the major art museums all over Europe. Old art and antiques are everywhere here. Just because something is old doesn't necessarily make it beautiful or valuable. Having masses of tacky old oil paintings all over his walls is pretty pitiful. Rudy probably buys leather bound old books by the yard to fill his bookshelves too. 😂
      Keep a tight line!

Thanks for talking about the fallacy (phallus-y?) of passion. I was a cook and a chef for 27 years and had that shit shoved down my throat constantly. Don't like the pay? "Fuck you, where's your passion?" Got sick? "Fuck you, where's your passion?" That twelve hour shift on a stretch of a dozen twelve hour shifts got you down? "Fuck you, where's your passion?"

    • @Sourheart

Funnily enough I've found a lack of "passion" is common in those that excel in any endeavor. I focus on gaming mostly, anc even in that avenue the tier-1 players will tell you how passion simply doesn't matter and work ethic is what separates the 1% from the .01%

@@edstuff1198 Ahh...the lovely warm bath of a well reasoned, eloquent statement that captures the nuance and subtlety of the situation. Unfortunately you completely missed the mark here, bucko. I'm talking about a work culture that has weaponized Joseph Campbell's 'follow your bliss' and will gaslight you into feeling like shit wanting some basic workers rights because hey, this is your passion, don't you want this?
I've worked in twenty or so different cooking gigs in that 27 year period and it's endemic. The alcoholism, broken marriages, broken bodies, jail time, drug abuse, and violence I was witness to and was a part of - I'm telling you man, food service is rife with rot. You tell me to get the fuck out? Well I did. Never regretted that decision. But to try and slap some bumper-sticker philosophy on my experience and say, 'no job is perfect, move on', is coming from a place of immense privilege and egotism. I'll bet you were born in the fifties, when life was a pretty sweet fruit, and mommy and daddy told you that the world was your oyster, am I right?

Just wanted to say without going over every point/topic mentioned in video... (otherwise my comments and points of discussion would be 10x longer then your video) GREAT Video! Keep up the content and being TRUE to YOU.
My context - (I rarely if ever comment on anyone's video) this video I truly felt comment was warranted. Recently stumbled on your channel this year , binged many of your videos as former magic player that was hooked as a kid with old formats...Mirage being the new hyped set when I was grade 5 - was active until Innistrad set. Your passion for old school mtg resonated deeply + plus your true take on topics concepts for various videos. It's refreshing to hear concepts/themes, perspectives/real life examples for the majority analyzed and conceptually summarized to complete this epic rant. Segments of concepts/themes here I only get to discuss with close family/friends ...(being a small ant even worse than Fallen Empires as a TH-camr myself) It's rare to have these honest takes on social media...I appreciate the value of this video! You, and channel
On behalf of the 10% or less that watched whole thing and appreciate its contribution - THANK YOU!

Life is a good part luck and circumstance. But successful people can’t SAY that because it would mean being born on third base and thinking they did it through “passion” and “hard work” was only partly true.
You CAN succeed through hard work and passion, but it’s much easier to succeed when you have a huge head start.
Rudy is a smart guy. But he’s benefitted hugely from luck. It’s a lot easier to put in “20+ hours” a day when you aren’t behind the 8 ball of life.

I work for a living have my whole life. I am truly rich because I know Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. Second I have family surrounding me that I love and that love me. You cannot take anything with you when you inevitably die and meet your maker. The question is are you ready for that meeting?

(Unserious): Don't worry Rudy, we've seen "you" all over the internet. Also, nice letting us know the Taco-Rudy is going full hot sauce.
(Serious): 100% service-level jobs are critical. They're the backbone of the entire capitalist system. That UBER dude that delivered my food for $15 or w/e...he might not make a day's worth of minimum wage, but he's still doing great work.
I'm lucky enough to do what I love, but I look at Rudy...he's doing what he loves AND he has a full head of hair. Some of us are truly blessed.

@47:15 - I still struggle with this every day of my life. This mindset hits so hard. I am lucky to know that other people may not say it out loud at times but it is so hard to know what is right and suffering internally to do what I know is right.

What a great video. Hit on a ton of points that i dont hear in cultural lexicon i especially liked your point about normal jobs. I think the advent of social media allows constant comparison that is detrimental to the working peoples mental health.

The idea of a bad job comes from the high cost of everything, really. Everyone's pursuing the fast and easy money, the assumed easy way out of the struggle. People looking down on the jobs that just don't pay enough to survive, pretty much. It makes sense when you realise how damaging to your health those low paying jobs can be.
