We all feel like throwing in the towel from time to time, but there is a good reason why homeschool moms want to give up, and there's an easy remedy for it too!

As a history professor, I really appreciate homeschoolers. When they get to college, they are great students!! I have been so impressed that I share all my lectures as a free resource to help homeschoolers.

I highly agree with college. Neither my husband nor I have a college degree. I have been made feel less than by someone who her and her husband each have 2 degrees as if we are inferior/less intelligent. My husband is incredibly intelligent and has his own business and makes 4-5x as much as the person who has made me feel inferior. And no student debt. I know not everyone is cut out to have your own business, but I’ve seen over and over how useless a college degree is unless you are going for something specific that guarantees you a good job.

This hits so close to home right now. I just had our 5th baby and am still new to homeschooling so I have no idea what I’m doing. I feel like I haven’t hit my stride - we aren’t getting things done as quickly as possible and I’m struggling to prioritize homeschool and housekeeping. I know it is just a season but it’s stressful when you realize this season is impacting your child’s education. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

    • @Arkiegirl26
      @Arkiegirl26 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

If you just had a baby I would say that a period of grace for yourself and your kids (remember they are adjusting too) would be an acceptable response. I had one 3.5 years ago and while we did some school I didn't push it and we went almost a year before we could find our groove again. There is nothing wrong with an adjustment period.

I wholeheartedly agree! I have been homeschooling 27 years, with 4 more to go, and can I just say that high expectations & comparisons of other homeschooling families are the thieves of your joy & your confidence. Watching TH-cam videos of homeschooling families can either encourage you or discourage you. We need to be careful what we read, watch, & listen to. I'm talking to myself! 😂
Too many families talk about how wonderful their days are & not about the struggles that we all have. Homeschoolers need to be real. It is hard, some days more than others. Sometimes you think you're not making a difference, but you are! Remember, you are not alone. ❤

Oh lady, I'm there. I've been self- counting myself so much lately. I did your January Homeschool Reset. Life got busy (aka broken bones/ skin cancer recovery/LIFE) that I'm just now getting to the reset in our homeschool room/schedule. I have over-complicated everything the past few years and I was definitely driven by fear; fear of letting my husband down, my children down of having to confront the next conversation with my in-laws. They're both retired school teachers/principals/ college professors who l still to this day think we're not doing the right thing. It's so hard when you're a natural people-pleaser but are going against the crowd. I've got this! We've got this! It's all going to be fine. 😅

I'm struggling over here with my almost 11 year old boy. He's hyperactive ADHD and mixed with hormones starting to fluctuate, it's terrible 😭 This is our first year, along with my 7 and 9 year old, and it's a huge battle of wills to get him through the day of school. I'm determined to hold on. It has to get better, right?? 😭😭😭

My daughter is 13, she's a little more mellow now but the hormones are no joke. I have let go of a lot. Lessons are no more than 20 minutes. She can only concentrate for about an hour or hour and a half per day. It's going to take us 2 years to get through our math book. I completely let go of doing history. BUT I have had her in school and she just zoned out and didn't do her work at all. I can keep her on task (however short the time is) and whatever we get done is more than she would have retained at school. Hang in there! @@Fawn62312

I wanted to just offer a plug for her homeschooling course. I brought it two years ago I believe and actually watched it with my husband (we share homeschooling as we both work different schedules). We had very young children at the time, but the concepts about finding your joys in homeschooling, how you best teach as a parent, and practical help like looping were invaluable. We have gone on to find our own preferred philosophy (ish), but this was the foundation. I kinda think if it as a passport book and then you can explore more specific resources within the philosophies and curriculums that work best for you. Honestly, the fact that Angela was a little quirky and would make an off color joke on occasion on other videos (not homeschool related necessarily) is what sold my husband because she seemed real. I’ll say I don’t agree with her all the time but I get so much good here, and wouldn’t agreeing all the time be boring? Hope Christopher makes an appearance, homeschooling dads who don’t just wear bow ties and talk about classical conversations are few and far between.

Hi Angie, I've been watching you for years. I'm a big fan! I've been homeschooling my daughter since kindergarten. She is now 15 years old and considered 9th grade. She has epilepsy and autism. She's neither high functioning nor non-verbal just beautifully in the middle. I love what you said about imagining school has ended and she is successful and what would that look like. I honestly couldn't answer that question right now, but you definitely made me think. I know you have a daughter with special needs as well so I wanted to ask you what success for her would look like. Thanks again Angie for everything you do 💕

    Such great advice!!
So many people forget how important the younger years ( before high school) are in forming the people they will be, as friends, spouses, parents, etc., the things that really matter in a person lifetime. We focus on character building, emotional/social skills and wait until high school to focus on career building skills.

You have so much wisdom. I really love the concept of working backwards with what you should focus on teaching your kids. This is my 16th year of homeschooling. So far, my oldest two have graduated. It is sobering just how fleeting the years are with our children. I still have seven children to educate, and it has given me a renewed perspective having two graduates so far.

Regarding your comment about the accounting degree, you cannot become a CPA without having a college education. Each state is different, but some states require 150 credit hours. With that being said, being a CPA is highly desired and a CPA will be chosen over someone who is not a CPA for accounting positions.

I'm an inattentive ADHD mom homeschooling an almost 11 year old boy (hyperactive ADHD), a 9 year old boy (inattentive ADHD who had violent meltdowns in public school and the main reason we homeschool) and a 7 year old girl. This is our first year and I'm struggling really bad with my oldest. He's flat out refusing to do any work most of the day and it's causing my other two to struggle in the atmosphere. My husband works long hours, and has been working with him on weekends, but I really want to get away from that if possible. I think it's such a shame that school in the US is so expensive. Before I went to university, my favourite teacher said "you don't go to university to get a job" and that's really stuck with me. I took it as, you go to university because you love learning, it's learning for learning's sake and about the development of community, of learning to be part if a community.
Clearly, when school is so expensive, that isn't realistic anymore because you need to pay loans back, so you need a job, and I think that's such a shame. Attitudes in the UK, in Germany, in other places where uni is free - or, at least, affordable to the point that you can pay for the majority of the tuition with your summer job - are so different. I've never met people more passionate about what they were studying - because they love it, not because it will lead to a job - than the students I met in the UK. I wish the experience was more accessible...education shouldn't be a luxury, or a means to an end

I REALLY recommend for high schoolers, the Book “How to Fail at Almost Everything and still win Big.” - Scott Adams .it talks about building skill stacks & about systems iver goals. So many young and middle-age adults have said that this is the one book that changed their lives and was the primary source they refer to that helped make them successful.
