- My repair of a Saab SID display, which had lost pixels on the LCD screen. Ultimately, I discovered the ribbon cable had deteriorated beyond repair, and I purchased a replacement ribbon cable. A $400 unit was fixed for a little more than $40.

Saab makes the best Stereo units.. in 1980's when you brought the Saab 1/4 of the car's price was actually the sound system which included CD player.. Amazing.
I had read a number of online material, including forum postings, etc, before I started the job. I knew taking it out to look inside was not a big investment of time, and the display had been gradually deteriorating, so I had strong indications it was either the LCD itself or the connection to it. The display was already pretty useless, as you can see, so I saw no loss in taking the risk of taking it apart and looking at it. The car runs just fine without the unit in the dashboard at all.
There is a ribbon cable for each LCD display in the car, but yes, one for the whole display. You should definitely check your exhaust system if you are getting a strong smell in your car. That is potentially very dangerous. You are probably overdue for a cabin air filter replacement, too, but that is separate from smelling exhaust in the car. Fix the exhaust first.
I drove the car to work today and the display remains as good as new. My wife and I were really sad without a clock in the car. For that alone, it was worth it, but not for the cost of a whole replacement unit.
@frazzenr1 It is the On star system that does not work any more due to digital change in Onstar.
@frazzenr1 It is the Onstar button. Onstar went digital a couple of years ago, and since this was a factory installation of the earlier analog service, it no longer works in the vehicle.
I believe a replacement switch is available; there are certainly some listings on e-bay, for example. If you want to devise a better replacement solution, it does seem that there would be a market for it. Many people have complained of this problem.
@z0fty I hope it goes as well for you as it did for me. I worried a lot about getting the replacement ribbon just right on the LCD side, but the circuit board side was very easy. If you just use cellophane tape as they suggest in the instructions, you can always adust it if the results aren't immediately improved. I was able to get it done in just one shot, but the replacement does allow for re-adjustment.
The plastic ring surrounding the hazard lights button is broken in the exact same way in my '01 9-5 as well.
@frazzenr1 I should add this car is in the USA, and it might not have had this feature in other markets.
The "service theft alarm" came up on my SID a few weeks ago. You need to change the backup batteries in the alarm siren wich is located at the back of the washer fluid tank. I dont know how it is on a 2001 9-5 but my 2003 i had to use a dreml to open it up. But if it is like the older 9-5 yours should have 6 torx screws and a simply glue so it will open up with the use of a heat gun. Then just remove the old batteries and solder the new on to it. :) That will fix the problem most likely! :)
If the climate control actually works when you change settings, and only the display is bad, then there is a replacement ribbon available from the same manufacturer for this display screen, too. I have not done anything with that unit myself, but it probably is similar in how it comes apart and fixed.
@WaltersMama Yes, the dashboard looks much nicer back to normal. I know the "missing" clock was annoying, and for the first time in over a year I checked the mpg!
Hi, I tried that, replaced with fresh batteries, but still no joy for me. However, I did understand that to be the problem for most people with that message.
The stereo is holding up well in my car, and in my case has been trouble free since the car was new.
I don't have cassette tapes to play in it anymore, though.
@wil48823 It appears as a replacement part on at least one of the Saab enthusiast parts sites. The price of the entire switch is about $30 USD. I haven't seen just the plastic outer part available by itself. The one on my car crumbled apart, I was guessing due to heat/sunlight breaking down the plastic. A non-OEM possibility would be to machine a replacement from a piece of aluminum if you have access to such equipment. I was thinking of talking to a friend about it at some point.
That's fine. He can look up a video that shows the dis-assembly and re-assembly of the unit, then. Would have taken less time than it did to write a snarky comment.
You appear to be asking, "Where can I buy a new SID panel?" in Swedish. Ironic, given the car's origin.
As I am located in the United States, the best advice I can offer is search an auto junkyard for a used one. If you can test the display before purchasing, all the better. Alternatively, look for a refurbished unit if need a complete replacement.
I don't know if any new models are coming into the US since their bankruptcy, last I had heard.
I think people who want to keep these cars a while longer will have to get creative if they don't want to pay extraordinary money from a place that will still service them. My repair of the climate control system is another example of something that would cost a lot from a shop, that can be done for a fraction of the cost, and makes a big difference in the enjoyment of the car.
If you mean I don't show everything I did, sure, that is true. I am only one person with only 2 hands. The things I did off-screen were simple, but not to do and capture on video at the same time. The video discusses what I did and shows the before and after. I mention a product I used (that I have no affiliation with or responsibility for selling or promoting), as that is ultimately what worked.
Beyond that, what do you want for free, anyway?
that good ok did you find the repair for the theaf auto service?if not is the replacement of the cells on the siren.its location is on driver side front. under wind shield bottle.
I think it was Siemens, who made them for several car brands.
@Lavioso723 I have replaced the 3V lithium batteries in the alarm, but the message persists. I have also cleared the message a couple of times by removing the fuse for the alarm, but still no joy. I think I have a more complicated problem, fix still pending.
Hi, thanks for the video it was very informative! Also, I was wondering if you had fixed your security system yet and if so, was that something rather simple as well?
If that worked that's great. When I looked at mine, the contact points were transparent, so I didn't see how it would ever work again. That said, it wouldn't have hurt to try it first.
Not fully, I think the person's point is the fact that most people look up youtube videos for an easy walk through of disassembling and assembling of the unit otherwise a normal forum explanation of the issue would be enough.
@wil48823 I've never looked into having mine repaired. I don't even know how it got broken in the first place. I just noticed that it was one day. Have you had an estimate on what it would cost?
I replaced the 3V lithium batteries in the alarm unit, but no joy. I still get the error message, but that said, I don't seem to have any actual problems with the alarm system itself. Short of a new alarm unit and/or reprogramming it, I suppose it could be a defunct alarm sensor, but I am not going to spend $90 min. at the dealer to find out.
If the radio doesn't turn on at all, then you probably have a blown fuse, or possibly a problem with the radio unit itself. Possibly the on/off switch.
It's possible to fix it with hot iron... No need to replace it... Done this to my saab, 2 years ago...
Wow cool. Just bought a Saab two days ago. Same issue of course. So there's just the one cable for that unit? Do you happen to have an exhaust smell inside the car ever?
It is hard to say, possibly a fuse. I have found that various seemingly unrelated functions share fuses on this system.
I don't know where is the left motor arm . Can you please show me ?
Got damn i shouldnt had wrote that. :( Now the message is back and i checked the batteries and they are fine. :S And the message isnt always there so i cant just take it to a workshop. :/

Hi, that must be something that is newer than the model year I own. I have a service reminder that I can re-set in my VW via the console controls on the steering wheel, but no such thing in the Saab. Does the "reset" button on the LCD display do it? I don't know, just guessing, sorry.
i don't have an a/c button!
I am no expert on all of the model variations, but I have never seen a 9-5 without a/c. My condolences. The automatic climate control on these cars is really nice where I live, where you can go from requiring heat in the AM to a/c in afternoon.
