One of the best how-to videos i have ever seen. Clear, concise, nothing left out, nothing overstated. Well done! This will save me at least $20 this week!
Enjoyed your video. Well done. It was easy to watch and not too long. Keep your explanations the same (not too technical) as I for one find some videos overboard technically.
Excellent coverage of how to tighten the locknut, and how tight the cone should be against the ball bearings. That was what I came here for, and I got all the info I needed. Thank you.
This guy is cool I like how he goes into in depth and he how he can see it in his mind like the back of his hand when he was drawing it out on the board.... those wheels are definately from early as the 1990s now upper end roadbike have essentially the same kind of bearings as you would see on skateboards but in different sizes... sweet vid man I know I'm like 8 yrs late
Excellent video! You covered all the details so well! If you aren't a teacher by trade, you'd be a great one! Lots of patience, and seeing things from the other guy's point of view! Thanks much!
Big THANK YOU! Very useful. The diagram is wonderful. I was smiling at explanations what a "cross-section" is, because I've got used to technical drawings, but I realize that many people can't read diagrams easily.
Great video! I just bought a bike and will be doing the assembly myself for the first time. Your tutorials have given me every confidence that everything will be just fine. Thanks!
Taken all the fear of this task away - my Brompton bike riding buddy set me this challenge when we were out on the 'big bikes' and he discerned the need to inspect the bearings. My vintage Peugeot has sat in the dining room waiting for the moment when I could pluck up enough courage to start the task. Thanks CJH. BSA
What a fantastic video! Now I finally understand what the internals of a hub look like, which helps me understand what I need to do to service it. Thanks.
You have the best bike videos on youtube. I love how you use really simple bikes and explain so well the mechanics, while there is a lot of video out there with top equipments that can't explain simple stuff like this. Keep up the great job
I love that your ride this POS bike, but keep it so well tuned. I have what i call my trash bike (i found it in the trash), and i love working on it, keeping it in pristine condition, and yet no one would ever steal it. :) Great videos, thanks a lot!
Great video - I need to service my rear hub, but i'm a bit of a bike noob and didn't really understand what goes on in there.. now I do so thanks! The diagram was just what I needed. Great work CJ
Best video tutorial on how to clean out the front wheel ball bearings. Great explanation and to the point. Wish you could have cover the rear bearings and explain how everything works, but hopefully on your next video. Thank you for taking the time to post this video. Learned a lot today.
If you watch my video titled: "How to Change a Freewheel/Cassette on a Bicycle" you'll learn how to remove the Freewheel, which will show you the part you are missing in this video. Thanks for watching.
Great video! Ridden over 50k miles and yet didn't have a very clear picture of how this worked nor how to make a repair. Will try this out on my noisy front wheel this weekend!
I tried to install a quick release system onto a bike it was too small for and had balll bearings everywhere, i was so stressed about it and this taught me exactly how to solve that problem!! I guess you can learn anything on TH-cam!!
I SO appreciate what a careful and caring teacher you are in your videos! Thanks for such a comprehensive, yet easy to understand, explanation of wheel bearings. VERY helpful, and I will quickly be putting this new knowledge to use. …and you’ve EARNED a new Subscriber, my Friend!
great tutorial i was changing my axle to a quick release and found your info on the whole tight but not to tight on to allow the wheel to spin really helped me thought i broke my bike lol, thanks bro real good teacher
Nicely done! Today I took a hub apart and to my surprise.....bearings all over! (I'm a noob) Then the moment of "what did I do??" After your vid, I'm confident I can get it back together and running freely again, which was my intent to begin with. Thanks for you concise and clear instruction!
Thank you for this fantastic explanation and diagram of the hub. It really helped me understand what each part is and what how it functions. The description of how to actually do it was superb as well. Thank you very much for your detailed explanation of the process as well. You are awesome!
Thanks a million, great video and you explain things so well. I now know so much more about bikes than I did 20 mins ago and I have been riding for 30 years!
excellent demonstration thank you very much for taking time and effort to help some one in need,i did all steps and fixed my bike .keep posting good stuff
Wow. Very nice video. What i liked is that you used for your video a real wheel instead a fancy new wheel and hub like other guys. Thanks for this beautiful tutorial.
Thank you for this instructive video. It's very clear and takes the stress out of dismantling and checking/servicing the hub. I am rejuvenating a bike I haven't ridden for 5 years. Pumped up the tyres and one burst. Replaced it and the next split! And so it goes.
Very clear thank you. I like the fact that you showed the diagram as well as the practical. That helped me understand what it was that I was doing and therefore made the job easier.
Thanks for the video. I just bought a 2nd hand mountain bike but the rear wheel kind of wiggles a bit.The guy I bought it from told me I might have to change the ball bearings. However, after watching this, just tightening it might solve the problem? Since you didn´t do this video on the rear wheel I have some questions:do I need special tools(different from the ones you used) for the rear wheel? My tools are seriously laking...
Pretty detailed video, very helpful Sir. Thank you very much. Please do more great bike assembling and disassembling videos for DIY bike people like us.
that was a good explanation of how the bearings work. I find it alot easier to adjust the bearings by using two cone and adjustable spanners at the same time, if there's too much play you carefully turn both lock nuts clockwise simultaneously and if its binding you carefully turn both cones anticlockwise simultaneously, so long as both sides start out moderately tight repeating the adjustment two or three times torques it up sufficiently enough. I've not come across anybody else that does it this way but if you haven't already tried it I've always found it to be less frustrating and more precise.
Thanks for this video. It helped me with the back wheel on my son's bike. The back wheel on the Schwinn bike was a little more complicated but I figured it out.
Something I've found to be helpful, is that after I've greased the bearings and put everything back together I'll tighten the cone to the locknut just snug so that I can nudge the cone to loosen or nudge the locknut to tighten till I get the tension perfect then tighten cone to locknut to set the adjustment. This has worked pretty good.
Thanks a lot man this helped me to figure out what my problem with my bike was, it sounds horrible so probably is kinda rusty inside i hope that i won´t be needing to replace the whole thing thanks again! God bless you!
This tutorial was very informative and detailed. More tutorials need to be done like yours. Thank you and I look forward to watching the rest of your tutorials.
I'm really liking your instructional videos. I am wondering if you have one to help with this situation: I want to replace my wheels, so I got a pair of 2nd hand wheels. The problem is with the "over lock nut spacing". The 2nd hand wheel was in a bike with dropouts spaced farther out. There is a spacer that I can remove from one side, but will this effect the way the chain moves over the cassette (a 9-sp). Do I only have to worry about centering the wheel?
I'm not exactly sure what the conical washer you are describing is. On some axles there is a thin metal ring which goes on the outside of the cones which keeps dust and dirt from getting into the bearings. Does the washer you are describing have a larger inner diameter than the rest of the hardware?
Hey Chris, I really like your vids. You really dumb it down for the ambitious everyman wanna-be-bike mechanic. Several questions and comments: Where do you buy parts and tools when you need them? Can you recommend an online site? What is that plastic disc that backs up the derailleur called? What's your story? Are you an engineer or a mechanic? You really seem to have a wealth of knowledge for a young man. Love your music, too. Peace brother.
Great vid! I'm having trouble with the rear wheel. I have a conical washer inside the hub but I don't remember if it goes on top of the ball bearings or below them. Help?
One more thing, you're right that put wrenches on both lock nuts won't help me unlock the cones. But IMO, they should work to loosen/unlock the lock nuts, right ? Btw, thanks for the reply.
hey, nice video - I will try this on an old MTB wheel... Another question for the guy in the video - what exact tools do you recomend for a diy to replace cartridge bearings in the suspension? (horst link, seat stay and pivot). I´d like to know how to do it without spending a fortune on tools.. thanks
thanks for the explaining step by step on how its done, just like a haynes Manuel shows, been season after season wondered why the front wheel always clicked every time i roll down the road, took it all apart and grease was dryed out of bearings, least all 10 balls/each side was still intaked
thank you, 11 years ago you made this vide, 2023 and it helped me - history is important - thank you again :)
The cross sectional drawing made this better than any other tutorial ive seen. Nice work man
One of the best how-to videos i have ever seen. Clear, concise, nothing left out, nothing overstated. Well done! This will save me at least $20 this week!
Enjoyed your video. Well done. It was easy to watch and not too long. Keep your explanations the same (not too technical) as I for one find some videos overboard technically.
Best explanation for repairing/replacing wheel bearings on TH-cam!
Thanks CJHoyle! Really helpful guide to repairing the bearings! Love that cross-section view!
❤
A decade later and this video is still helping people. Thanks!
No problem, glad to hear.
Excellent coverage of how to tighten the locknut, and how tight the cone should be against the ball bearings. That was what I came here for, and I got all the info I needed. Thank you.
Excellent video, going beyond the call of duty with the diagram. I wish more tutorial videos on YT were like this.
thumbs up!
Today (with your video help) I switched out a front axle for cost of parts, grease and two new ballbearings (8,70€). THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Jessica R Brown hi
I watched a lot of you tube vidios on hub repair, and yours was the most informative!
This guy is cool I like how he goes into in depth and he how he can see it in his mind like the back of his hand when he was drawing it out on the board.... those wheels are definately from early as the 1990s
now upper end roadbike have essentially the same kind of bearings as you would see on skateboards but in different sizes... sweet vid man I know I'm like 8 yrs late
You're right about the vintage of those wheels, but low to mid end bikes actually still use this style of bearings!
Thank you for drawing a diagram! That makes everything so much clearer!
Excellent video! You covered all the details so well! If you aren't a teacher by trade, you'd be a great one! Lots of patience, and seeing things from the other guy's point of view!
Thanks much!
Big THANK YOU! Very useful. The diagram is wonderful. I was smiling at explanations what a "cross-section" is, because I've got used to technical drawings, but I realize that many people can't read diagrams easily.
great video - thanks! Finally someone working on a bike that's not brand new and shiney. Mine never is. :)
Great video! I just bought a bike and will be doing the assembly myself for the first time. Your tutorials have given me every confidence that everything will be just fine. Thanks!
Thanks..very nice explanation on cycle bearing operation and how cycle wheel rotates on bearings smoothly. you are very good at explaining things.
Dude. Your the Man. I was lost on what to do. . my first mechanic job. You were so helpful. Two thumbs up for you
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
Lifesaver. The diagram was a huge help. Thanks for helping out this budding bike mechanic!
Thanks CJH. BSA
Absolutely excellent tutorial. I fixed my bike thanks to your video and will use what I learned for the rest of my life. Thanks a lot.
Wow!! Loved the detailed info. Very well explained thanks!
Drawing was very helpful too👍👍
Now I finally understand how those hubs work. Thank you for such a great video!

What a fantastic video.. Well done man! Best explanation seen so far. Thanks for your efforts!! Cheers
Text book. If you cant sort your bearings after watching this, then give up. Great vid!!!!!
I love that your ride this POS bike, but keep it so well tuned. I have what i call my trash bike (i found it in the trash), and i love working on it, keeping it in pristine condition, and yet no one would ever steal it. :) Great videos, thanks a lot!
akzorz I've got a POS bike as well, I've grown too attached to it, taken it everywhere, it has grown on me like a lovable tumour
You made this messy process perfectly clear. I applied it right away. Thank you !
I'm glad to hear!
Great video - I need to service my rear hub, but i'm a bit of a bike noob and didn't really understand what goes on in there.. now I do so thanks! The diagram was just what I needed. Great work CJ

I discovered it was a dust cap with an smaller inner diameter: like a doughnut cut in half sideways. Thanks for getting back to me.
Thank you for making this video. This was the only video I could find that shows how to take apart bolt on wheel hubs.
Great video! Ridden over 50k miles and yet didn't have a very clear picture of how this worked nor how to make a repair. Will try this out on my noisy front wheel this weekend!
Excellent and very clear!
Great idea with the cross section diagram that explains it very well!
Can you tell me what grease you use please?
I personally use white lithium grease, although that's not what I showed in the video.
I tried to install a quick release system onto a bike it was too small for and had balll bearings everywhere, i was so stressed about it and this taught me exactly how to solve that problem!! I guess you can learn anything on TH-cam!!

Thank you, just nice to watch someone that knows what they're doing to double check my own work :)
Good instruction video.
I had done this while ago not knowing what I was doing. If I had watched this before, it could have saved me a lot of time.
This is the best video on ball bearings and greasing them.
Nicely done! Today I took a hub apart and to my surprise.....bearings all over! (I'm a noob) Then the moment of "what did I do??" After your vid, I'm confident I can get it back together and running freely again, which was my intent to begin with. Thanks for you concise and clear instruction!

Wow. Very nice video. What i liked is that you used for your video a real wheel instead a fancy new wheel and hub like other guys. Thanks for this beautiful tutorial.
Very informative. The whiteboard diagram was a nice touch.
Excellent video. Good balance between just enough detail with the economical use of time and not dragging out the explanations.
Great video!!! One of the best presentations I've ever seen. You knocked it out of the park!
Thanks, I'm glad to hear it was helpful.
Thanks for being very informative, which you take step by step of what tools are used.
Thank you for such thorough explanation. The cross-section diagram really helped as well.

Excellent video cj. Wish I had watched it before taking my road bike wheel apart!
Excellent tutorial - just the right amount of detail to make it crystal clear.
Thank you, my tire started rubbing against my rim 20 minutes ago, this helps me so much to fix it.
Glad to hear.
I'm teaching myself bicycle mechanics so i really appreciate this. 👍👍👍
Excellent video. Your explanations are clear and I learned a lot! Thanks.
i've been looking all over youtube for videos like this, thank you so much for uploading these educational videos
Your a good teacher, you explain everything very well😁

you are such a great teacher bro your videos are the best about bicycles on youtube :D i learn a lot everytime
Really well done Cjhoyle. One of the best Tutorials on youtube really helpful for me
Nice tutorial. I like your inclusion of the helpful diagram in the beginning. Good teacher!
Thanks very much, this helped me understand how the wheel works and how to fix it. Great presentation and attention to detail! I appreciate it.
Excellent, professional and thorough. Great video
THE BEST EXPLAINING VIDEO ON TH-cam ON THIS TOPIC!!! thx this vid helped me a lot!

Very instructive video... A question for you: If the cups are damaged do you need a whole new hub, or can the cups be pressed out and replaced?
My bicycle need to repair now. And that's video really help me. Thanks for shearing.
Excellent video! Clear, focused, covers the topic. Great job

Great job. This helped me save an old bike
Great video you break it down so is understood....thanks

So thats why my bearings kept getting loose and ripping in half! Thanks for the excellent video!
Thanks for sharing this. It is very easy to understand. Well done!!!

This is a great video! Thanks for the clear, detailed instructions!
That was very helpful - thank you. Just enough detail without going too far. Top man - thanks for taking the time.
Thank you man! You're a life saver!
Very informative video.
Great tutorial, just successfully cleaned and re-greased the bearings in my hub. Thanks for the video.
