This is actually the most basic Hozier song sonically & lyrics wise, I guess it's the most palatable to the most people is what got it to the top of hot 100. It's very catchy tho, the part where he says neat is just very satisfying to hear & sing. But for more interesting Hozier tunes, check out Eat Your Young, De Selby part1 & part2, Francesca, Abstract (Psychopomp) & Unknown from his latest album, & Wildflower & Barley from the same EP as Too Sweet that he just released a month ago.
The images of dirt in the video relate to the lyrical content of the song. She aspires to live a "clean" life, but life for him is inherently grittier, dirtier, messier than what she finds ideal. Interesting to think how the words humus (dirt), humility, humiliation, and human are all related. Different definitions of maturity are competing in this song. There are always people who think that maturity is about having self-discipline and organizing your life, and other people who say to them that maybe if they aged like wine they could see the beauty in all of life, including the wild, random, raw, and even unattractive parts. Both sides are right. To live and love in the world you need a balance of both, but the percentage of each will vary from person to person.
I didn’t get that he was talking about a woman nagging. I thought he was saying she was too prudish, lived too clean of a lifestyle, too proper. Like their lifestyles didn't match, and in fact, they clashed.
I like black coffe no sugar, i like dark chocolate a bitter 90%, i like my spirits neat and i like my women real . Life is bitter stop this illusion that its not
I don't like this type of song. Actually, it's pathetic, the type of song that people listen to nowadays. Four minutes of the same rhythm, no variations, just the same thing over and over again. And everything is so clean. There is no guitar, no distortion. Really?
you don’t have to listen to this song! me personally it’s a beautiful song with hozier as a great artist. so respectfully you can listen to a different song!
@@leonardocorrea4951 don't be an arse! The song is good tho, you been mean don't make the music worse or something in this way, Hozier have some other complex musics, if you Google it maybe you find it, you're mad about this song because you listen to what it's on the mainstream, if you wasn't over this, maybe you wouldn't have to be here, saying that the art of someone it's pathetic, but clearly, the only thing being pathetic here is you, I'll repeat, don't be an arse.
I think the angel of small death and the codeine scene might be more to your taste if you think this hozier song is too “clean” wt ever the f that means.

Hozier is his middle name most definitely a irishman from wicklow like me😊
Great song. It - and the original album that it was supposed to be released on - was inspired by Dante’s Inferno.❤
