You went through the backyard of a house I owned in Andover, MA - it was great having the railroad about 100 feet from my living room! The trains were great neighbors - totally quiet for most of the time and then 30 seconds of majestic motion going by. My daughter, born and growing up there, thought all houses had trains as neighbors. When we moved, she was deeply disappointed in the new house.
Next Time Book a Roomette, it's worth it. I did it twice from Philadelphia to Tampa and take along a UHF/VHF scanner to listen out for detailed information that train crew won't disclose over the PA. It's interesting to hear what the dispatchers telling the engineer. You also hear Hot Box Detectors every few miles.
I know roomettes are costly. But, you'd never have to deal with that guy. Once had a guy's chihuahua keep escaping from him while he slept next to me. . No sleep at all. 😕
You are a train travel warrior! I always enjoy watching Amtrak trips in coach, because that is how the vast majority of riders travel. It is so tiresome watching the endless roomette videos, which are just not helpful. I would have liked to see more of your time in the cafe car and your meals, because we coach passengers do spend a lot of time there. Especially if you are traveling coast to coast in coach, which is something I've done. Think about a trip on the California Zephyr through the Rockies next!
Naw 90 aint fast for the ACS-64s they can hit 150 tops, but are limited to 125 mph, but yeah you should have told the conductor if the dude kept bothering you, they most likely would have either moved you or told the guy to stop
Nice Video. I am an Amtrak lover like yourself. I myself had some bad experiences riding coach on long distance trips, especially my experience going to Fort Lauderdale Florida on the train where I myself had to sit next to a very irritating customer. The other disgusting experience was several years ago when I was on the train going to buffalo and this one big overweight passenger sat next to me and I was so furious, I ended up sitting in the cafe car for the rest of my ride. From those 2 experiences, from that point, all of my Amtrak trips will be roomettes and ever since for the last 2 trips going to both New Orleans and Chicago, I enjoyed being in a roomette. May cost more, but it makes the trip more memorable and you have all the privacy in the world to yourself. I am actually looking forward to my next vacation, which will be California in December and that will be a roomette trip. Enjoy your travels.
Back in November 2021, I took Amtrak all over the country from coast to coast. I think I did like 10,000 miles on the train. I love train travel as well. And usually the people you meet along the way are very interesting and have their own stories to share. Not everybody is like the creep that sat next to you. Glad you made it out all right Traveling by the train, gives you a different perspective on the world. Everyone’s going to their own destinations, but during that time of traveling together, you usually learn a lot about yourself and life along the way.
Heh, I did the same trip a month earlier. But let's be real - traveling long distance in coach on Amtrak is an unpleasant slog. The only thing you learn along the way is how bad Amtrak and its employees are. However in between that, there are nice moments with the scenery and the people you meet on the way.

My wife and I live in SoCal and have taken the Southwest Chief L.A. to Chicago (43 hours), Empire Builder Chicago to Seattle (46 hours), Texas Eagle L.A. to Chicago (62 hours), California Zephyr Chicago to Emeryville (53 hours), and Cardinal from Chicago to Philadelphia (26 hours). However, as senior citizens, we always took a roomette so we never had the issue you had with a rude seat mate. Your video inspires me to replicate your trip, perhaps in the spring or autumn season. I just did that trip last week but from Tampa to Portland and back on the train. It was also the Silver Star b/c that's the Tampa train. It's a fun trip but i gey a roomette for the long part.
From real life experience when live near an active rail line (both freight and passenger with an active crossing) one does get use to having and hearing trains daily
I did 38+ hours in coach from Fargo ND to Seattle WA on Amtrak's Empire Builder lol 38 hrs hence the 5 hr delay, the train could go 40 mph one afternoon cuz of super hot tracks in Montana, and the same night a 60 mph windstorm the train could go only 20 mph, even before I boarded the train, it was 2 hours late pulling into Fargo station, it was all right, the cars were double decker superliners I was upstairs, there was a cafe car with panoramic views, and we all got compensated with a free meal in the dining car and snacks through out for the delays. Great trip, always an adventure when traveling via Amtrak. I will say you are brave girl, you never know who could sit next to you. I will be picky though Freeport, ME to Miami, FL would be the complete Northeast. Looks though you would have to north to Freeport first then back down, not really the all the way down south trip. Thanks for inspiration, wife wants to try this out. Will get a sleeper somewhere south of Washington, a shower will be needed.
On the speed, most of Amtrak's locomotives and cars are rated for 125 mph, but are mostly limited to much slower than that outside of the Northeast Corridor. (I see you rode Brightline--Amtrak's next generation national network locomotives and railcars are the same Chargers hauling Venture cars at 125 mph from Cocoa to Orlando.) The Acela is thought of as the "fast train" for its limited stops and higher top speed, but given speed limits on even the NEC between Rhode Island and New Haven, they're not actually _that_ much faster than the standard Northeast Regionals, they just make fewer stops.
South station in Boston would’ve been a better waiting place compared to back bay. There are restaurants! Could you transfer there after north station next time?
I love taking the train when traveling, I think it's the best way to see the country and everything it has to offer. However, if you have a rude seatmate like you did, then it sort turns off the experience and makes it negative. Apologies that you had to go through that, I like having a row to myself. I hope to make a similar journey like this soon, this looked like a lot of fun.

I've taken the Star for day trips from Winter Park to Tampa and Kissimmee(Pre SunRail Phase Two and weekends) couldn't fathom a coach trip like that. As an aside Lynx is even cheaper than described here. If you are taking more than three one way trips in a Service Day ask for a day pass before putting money in their farebox 4.50 for a day pass. Saves even more than three one ways. Only issue is it covers the Service Day Not 24 hours and of course works for transfer rights for SunRail but that requires a step up fare.
Any advantage to transferring from Boston North Station to Back Bay to pick up the NER versus going to South Station where it originates? South Station is a much more pleasant place to wait... (and has an Amtrak lounge for those who have access)
Hi. Yes, South Station does have a lounge for Amtrak travelers. I remember seeing this last year when I passed through a few times. Spacious station with the occasional crowd prior to departures too. Good food choices as well with the city streets immediately outside. To answer your question if South Station is better to depart from, there's a T Orange line connection that has Back Bay and North station as stops. One train to connect, no transfers needed. To connect to South Station from North, the orange and red T lines need to be used. Unfortunately there's no dingle T line connecting service between both stations. I looked into the missing connecting service myself for North & South Station. The short answer is that either a few tunnels or a single union station are proposals to connect both directions of train service into each direction of New England. The problem I recall seeing with this is that like any other construction project, the estimated costs are very expensive. If I recall correctly, the digging underwound aspect of it is what jacks up the price tag. This is not to say that another infrastructure law cannot help provide funding. But it's something Amtrak, the MBTA, and the city need to deliberate on a little more to make a final decision on. I think connecting train tunnels with an extra platform or two is the best option. Because I think there's a lot of underground obstacles that cannot be modified to accommodate a single union station. Another T line between both stations might not be a bad idea. But then it's another ticket to get between both station potentially. Hope this helps :)
@@grommit700 If one doesn't mind a short walk you can take orange line to Downtown Crossing then walk 10 minutes to South Station. The North South connection was promised as part of the Big Dig, but never happened with all the cost overruns with Big Dig.

Ive traveled East coast to West Coast and back about 4 or 5 times. Most of those were in the 90s when i was stationed at Ft Bragg. Im sorry you had to deal with that creep. Next time inform the train crew and asknfor seat change. The conductor should accommodate you. I will say, its too bad they don't have the Slumbercoach anymore. It was a single room that changed into a bed at night. It had a sink and a toilet. Unfortunately, you didn't get the free meals in the dining car you do in the sleeper cars. It was a nice experience and i used it when possible going up and down the East Coast.
I personally would only fly flight out of LaGuardia, JFK and Newark for about 89- $147 but then again, there are some people who are just afraid to fly and feel safer on the train
Next time get a roomette on the Florida leg. Keeps out the riff-raff and it's 1000 times more comfortable than an airplane. My bad back can testify to that. Plus they have a (shared) shower.

Now that I think of it, I see this happening one day in USA. As a guy myself, it's upsetting to see that men cannot control themselves in public like this. I feel bad for the women too. I also think this should be cause to remove unruly passengers who disturb train travelers. If the airlines can do it, train crews and police should be able to as well. I've done a good amount of train travel between Springfield, MA and NYC these past 6 years. To a degree, what was seen in this video by that guy does validate and confirm some things I've seen on all my train travels. Intoxicated men is a repeating observation.

These trains are meant more for the journey and scenery, not for speed. In the US it makes more sense to take a plane for long distances. Japan is about 100x smaller than US. Although US is building 220 MPH train from LA to SF

Listen.... You are not obligated to sit in any particular seat when you are going coach.... As soon as the train starts, you get up, you look around and you could switch your seat anywhere. You want preferably look for a row that doesn't have anybody else in it... I know this because I have taken the coach on the auto train about twelve different times and I know you can sit wherever you want in coach..... But anyway... She's very nice and very nice to listen to....

Well Actually, The ACS-64'S Only Rated For 135 MPH As Its Top Speed, Not 150, Despite Both The Speedometer Going Up To 160 And Being Limited To 125.

I did this trip in 2001. It took 36hrs and I had similar experiences with crazies who I assumed were on a no-fly list. Never again.
I'm curious of why you chose Back Bay versus Boston South station. South Station is much nicer and just as easy to get to coming from North Station.

This "Slumbercoach" that you describe is exactly what the roomettes on the train are today. And they are 4-5 times the cost of a coach seat.

I would have gotten a sandwich from the deli to have for meal not have to buy food on train .. I give you credit I would only do the ride in a sleeper car
Answer to why the train that long' People take that train to avoid the security screening messes at the airport and there's less chance of the train getting cancelled then a flight.

Japan is so lucky that the shinkansen goes 200 mph and magnetic trains are on the rise there. wow does the USA need something like 200mph-500mph level trains it makes more sense for such a broad and expansive country which is also the richest to have way faster trains than Japan doesnt it? 😅 sorry that was so ruff for you i hope you recover well ❤
These trains are meant more for the journey and scenery, not for speed. In the US it makes more sense to take a plane for long distances. Japan is about 100x smaller than US. Although US is building 220 MPH train from LA to SF

Listen.... You are not obligated to sit in any particular seat when you are going coach.... As soon as the train starts, you get up, you look around and you could switch your seat anywhere. You want preferably look for a row that doesn't have anybody else in it... I know this because I have taken the coach on the auto train about twelve different times and I know you can sit wherever you want in coach..... But anyway... She's very nice and very nice to listen to....
WHY....would you just go down in coach... Book a roomette! Having a private room, even if its really small, is amazing
