It is a marine brown alga distributed worldwide, particularly abundant along the Atlantic coast.
They are either free-floating, mostly lithophytic but some are epiphytic.
E. fasciculatus grows as epizoic on the fins of certain fishes.
In India the genus is represented by about 16 species and mostly grow along the Western coast. e.g., E. indicus, E. coniferus, E. arabicus.
