 It is a marine brown alga distributed worldwide, particularly abundant along the Atlantic coast.
 They are either free-floating, mostly lithophytic but some are epiphytic.
 E. fasciculatus grows as epizoic on the fins of certain fishes.
 In India the genus is represented by about 16 species and mostly grow along the Western coast. e.g., E. indicus, E. coniferus, E. arabicus.
