Hey! I’m a russian speaking Ukrainian and has been listening to your podcast on spotify since episode 12 or something. Huge fan, especially of David Sacks.
I’m also originally from Luhansk, Donbass region. Hand to evacuate my mother and grandmother from Luhansk to Kyiv in 2014, and now from Kyiv to western Ukraine in 2022.
I have a couple of insights for David, totally subjective and personal, but still:
    - speaking russian does not make me russian, or my land
    - my grandmother and grandfather were born in the same region, in the rural area, and they speak Ukrainian. They were forced to learn Russian and use it, because otherwise you could not function in USSR.
    - please stop calling this a war a civil war. It did start 8 years ago. yes, there are some pro-russian ukrainians fighting. But the vast majority of people there did not want either joining russia or this war.
David, I respect your position of focusing on US and not caring who controls Donbas. But then please stop expressing these pointless ideas, based on some article you read written 15000km away from the epicenter of this war. You don’t know what people of Ukraine want, including those in Donbas. So please stop spreading this bullshit and playing onto russia’s hand.

I think Jcal has made interrupting sacks an art form. He pauses just long enough for David to start his counter then cuts him off continuing his point. He does that 2 or 3 times until his point is over emphasized. That is the debate style of a true bestie, as we all know. Great job moderating Jason👍

So as a citizen of Ukraine I can confidently state - that our goal is not a "cease-fire by any price". This is a common missunderstanding.
Ukraine is a souvereign country and currently part of our land where occupied. So there is option to negotiate a cease-fire in case those territories are returned to Ukraine. Period.
At the moment Ukrainians are willing to pay the price. Literally. And the answer is very straightforward: this is not about short-term things that you are seeing from far away. It's about long term conflict between the western values that were chosen by Ukraine and "ruskiy mir" bulshit. So this war is not the first. It is not the last. So I return to the point. For Ukraine it is about gaining stronger land and prevent future wars to come by gaining the strong victory today. And this is what is actually going on. Ukraine is gaining the victory. With strong support of US and EU.
(Please like this comment to promote and maybe to get it seen by the besties. THANK YOU!)

    • @MyroslavOhorodnyk
      @MyroslavOhorodnyk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Another misconception is - the hypothesis that this war could have been prevented by giving the promise to russia, that Ukraine will not join the NATO. This is very far from true. Please don't forget that this war started not on Feb 24, 2022 - but in 2014. And guess what? Back then there were no discussion about Ukraine join NATO at all! Can you believe it - we had a big percentage of people back then - who were against it. So the thing told by Sacks - is interesting and seem to make sense, but only if you have a distorted understanding of the situation.
And this thing was NOT a Civil War, dude - what a nonsense.

As you see they are completely blind that Putin took first bite of Ukraine in 2014, now tried again, and “peace deal” would only let him prepare for another bite in few years. It’s taking apart of Ukraine piece by piece with American republicans pretending it’s “peace”.

Ukraine is winning the war for sure. When is it going to invite Moskwa?

    • @MyroslavOhorodnyk
      @MyroslavOhorodnyk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@bmurph24 Good question. Before 2014 - the direction of Ukraine was not clear. There were many prorussian politicians, and Yanukovich was the president. But the active part of nation rebelled after he cancelled the movement towards EU agreement. First students rebelled, but Yanukovych decided to stop the protests with force. The peacfull protesters were beaten by Berkut - the special forces. This fueled the Maidan and then Yanukovych escaped. The Maidan succeded. Something that failed to happen in Belarus, and failed to happen in Kazakstan. This was the moment when Ukraine clearly told russia - that we don't want to live under a dictatorship. And to keep Ukraine - putin decided to destabilize the situation and he used the moment when the government was not fully operating. Another reason - was political. Putin annexed Crimea and presented that as a huge victory, and his support was raised after.
And only because Ukraine got attacked - the nation understood that we need someone to protect us. The government started working in the NATO direction, while Russia was preparing for the further escalation. The current escalation is just another part of a long term plan to rebuild the USSR.
Do we agree? Hell NO. During the USSR Ukraine suffered 3 artificial femines. Whole generations of elite was sent to camps in Syberia. No way we allow it.

I don't think people understand that Zelensky does not necessarily have the liberty to decide what and when there is a cease fire, peace deal, or what is negotiated.
Zelensky ran on ending the war in the east, giving up/special status to Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea. This was unacceptable to the more right-wing hardliners in Ukraine, these groups were violently opposed to Zelensky considering this. So, there are very strong domestic factors influencing Zelenskys thinking that he has no choice but to consider. Especially now, since these groups and factions have become incredibly popular and extremely influential and strong. They have a lot of say and sway, before the war, and exponentially more so after the Russian invasion.

Love you guys and your work.
You provide so much value to us all. Thank you for giving us this insight in your thinking process as VC and founders. We are beyond lucky.
1:07:49: in Ukraine somewhat essential not to mixup southwest with southeast. If indeed southwest we are discussing, it isn’t a “disputed” territory, nor is it Donbass.
The assumptions the reasonings are based on here are from a westerner’s view point, and largely pushed by NKVD then KGB then FSB doctrine: getting the west to blame itself.
It would be good to have not one but two Russian born or cultural heirs to be guests to explain some of the perspective.
Tom Nash would be good for a recent perspective. And perhaps and decendant of white russians, with the added bird’s-eye view of history and inherited family history for historical context.
    Back to issue:
NATO membership is an excuse and has always been (Estonia and Lithuania haven’t been invaded despite being recent NATO members).
The simplest explanation is most often the right one: blitz failed even though the whole world, including western alliance, thought it would work.
“Unfortunately”, everyone had to step up to the plate seeing the resolve of the people and their president.
The proof of bad faith of the "NATO at our doorstep" argument from the “Soviet thinking power” is simple to exhibit: had Russia taken Ukraine, NATO would be at their doorstep, and even more so Ukraine being shaped as an enclave protruding into NATO territory, namely Poland, Romania Hungary, Slovakia.
Separately, it is essential to understand the religious makeup more in depth. The blanket statement of orthodoxy is akin to saying “ they are muslims, therefore…”.
The orthodox religion is split: one lending allegiance to Moscow, another based in Ukraine, autocephalous (its own head) and more closely aligned to Constantinople.
Why? Putin, in an effort to rebuild credibility within and abroad was, on the surface, courting institutions of the former glorious Tsarist era:
-White Russian tsarist regime descendants with big names luring them with promises of a spot in the sun,
-the Orthodox Church, with a reinstatement of its former glory and “freedom to operate”, but of course infused with Kremlin assets.
Ukraine and Constantinople know this all too well, and wanted a hard break from Moscow’s 5th column, and this break was therefore facilitated.
All this to say: Orthodox doesn’t mean culturally nor ideologically Russian.
And even if it did, it could easily be argued it sits on a sliding scale that, by even being up for discussion, is narrative Russia controls. In that case, Poland should be up for grabs too, because, heck the only difference is that the alphabet is no longer Cyrillic, and therefore clearly western influence is encroaching… Or Greece is an Orthodox country, therefore should be incorporated.
In the end, it is the people who have decided, in Poland, and as evidenced, in Ukraine too. The legitimacy of the independence of the eastern territories is not even really debatable. Russia sent in unbadged military and mercenaries, Chechens and Wagner, put up completely fabricated votes, replaced local governments in good old fashioned soviet tradition, and it is no longer a point that is being discussed, but is somewhat and somehow now accepted. The Russian narrative seems to have won on that front.
It has to be thought of from first principals, as you would a company (after all a well run country is no different). As such, it is clear Russia has been beyond deeply mismanaged and victim of its leadership since the beginning of the 20th century, which has used victimhood mentality as a basis on which to operate, shifting blame outward with a "Heads we win, tails you lose" angle.
    Pure and simple.
There is a stark difference in results in management between Singapore, having virtually nothing to start with, and Russia, that has everything and is well positioned to capitalize on its geographic advantage, especially considering the implications of climate change and consequent usable landmass.

Balkan style civil war!? It’s very sad when people use this phrase, and it tells me immediately they had no clue what they were talking about. Like in the case of Ukraine where Russia, mighty military power, invaded and inteded to conquer whole country, same did Serbia, agressor in the conflict back in 1990s, tried to do in Bosnia and some other regions of ex YU, claiming to protect serbian speaking regions (although nobody was really threatened, all was fear and war mongers, tbh). Unlike Ukraine, Bosnia was not given any weapons to defend themselves, the opposite happened with embargo. After many years Bosnian forces were about to liberate whole country, and they were stopped by the US and the EU and trapped into peace agreement which even today has done nothing for the people of Bosnia and the whole region. Bosnia and Ukraine are internationally recognized countries and their entire borders should be respected and guaranteed by international laws. What’s happening now in Ukraine is been terrible. I feel for the Ukraine people and suffering and I wished the war never happened. And I hope it ends soon so the suffering of Ukraine people is ended.

Holy Shit! This was am awesome episode and reminded me of why I started watching this pod in the first place.
Also regarding the Ukraine / Russia conflict, stop assuming that what you are seeing transpire publicly and what’s been publicly discussed is the entire story. The public isn’t privy to the entire story and won’t be. Sorry to burst the bubble but the pundits, no matter which side they fall on, are just that - people commenting based on a fraction of the story. Anyone assuming that diplomacy wasn’t attempted in every single form is flat out presumptive and biased. Additionally, anyone assuming that Putin was interested in diplomacy appears pretty disingenuous. If that was the case, there were numerous opportunities to either de-escalate or withdraw and he took none of them. You don’t invade a sovereign nation that hasn’t done anything to warrant it if you’re interested in peace or diplomacy.
Misinformation is real and assuming the public knows or can know the whole truth is way too presumptuous. Sacks said it himself - he can’t know what Biden is doing or saying behind closed doors. Then stop assuming that you DO know, please. Maybe give the guy the benefit of the doubt for once? Brad also mentioned the same - these are assumptions based only on partial information.

I absolutely loved this episode. Brad brought such great energy, perspective and data to the conversation. I also wish there was a woman or diversity on this pod. First thing I thought when the points about great stewards of capital was - women and diverse founders are more capital efficient and get into the public markets with less capital.

Another great one Besties! So, it looks like the US is actually playing a chess game with 🇷🇺 and checkmate is in sight. A good discussion for the next pod would be how 🇷🇺 hardware and communication are underperforming in the war and who are the suppliers.

    • @AlphaAsymmetry
      @AlphaAsymmetry 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@alk7747 …Maybe. But I challenge that 🇷🇺’s aim was a longer operation. By all accounts it looks like with the movement of all that old hardware they wanted to intimidate the target and have a quick surrender but it looks that move was a groupthink move to please the 🤴 ….We’ll see how many more pieces 🇷🇺 is willing to sacrifice.

Who said the company is not the stock? Of course vc is different, but what is missing is these opinions is what the common person wants and needs. Not another copy cat company. Advice for the common man - never chase a company, never fall in love with a company. Media never knows what is actually going on inside a company. Great conversation.

We record on zoom because the latency is much lower than any other video conferencing platform we’ve tried.
This means that when quick comments shoot back and forth between everybody, it’s almost as if they’re in the same room with very minimal lag.
With remote podcasting, there are minor tradeoffs we have to make, and one of those is sacrificing slightly higher end video quality for the conversation to flow better.
They all have DSLR cameras at their main setups, but yes Zoom and TH-cam both compress!
Just wanted to give some insight into our production process. Thanks for the feedback!
