Your second recommendation is absolutely correct: limit the amount of substrate. I have seen too many terraria and terrarium videos filling so much of the container with substrate. I think some people use the same mentality of potting a houseplant as they do with planting a terrarium by filling it with lots of soil. Terrarium plants are generally small plants and not need much soil. As you mentioned, you lose growing space and lose focus on the plants by adding too much substrate.
