  • One of the benefits of the way that we live in large societies is that we’re able to pool our resources to embark on huge megaprojects that, in theory, are intended to benefit everyone. Whether this be for scientific pursuits, infrastructure, or providing valuable resources to where they’re needed… complicated machinery, difficult terrain, or vast and ambitious designs can soon see the costs skyrocket. It’s time to travel the world, and beyond, to see just what’s possible when there’s enough commitment to an idea, as we take a look at the 15 most expensive construction projects ever built.

If you count the interstate system in the US as one project, then you should count the Chinese Highspeed Rail Network as one project, because unlike the US interstate, the Chinese highspeed rail network actually came out as one project, and they currently have 40,000 km operational so far since the project was launched in 2008 (I guess the Chinese built a "little" quicker than the California high-speed rail, which also started in 2008, and so far operational, 0 km...)

fun fact: I-5 is the only continuous interstate highway that touches both the Mexican and the Canadian borders. second fact if you didnt know, even numbered interstates/highways travel east/west and odd numbered travels north/south

I don't think that much. I mean.. the largest man-made island in the world (the Dutch province of Flevoland) isn't even on here, while that should obviously be waaaay more expensive than those sinking islands in Dubai.
Wait, I didn't take into account how dumb those countries are with money. You are right, they probably spent more since they are terrible at city planning.

Interesting projects, but I question the one about the interstate system in the US: The Chinese highways cover double the distance by now and has been built in much shorter time, so it makes more sense to classify them as one project,. It may have been cheaper of course, due to chinese wages.
As for clean energy, another interesting project is the Wendelstein 7x stellarator.

Of all those projects, the massive road project that China is spearheading quite frankly scares me.
Who in their right mind would want to partner with the CCP and the Chinese military.
And what’s to stop the Chicoms from using that highway system to invade their ‘partners’.
I hope the fusion reactor that’s being built in France works. Maybe a fusion reactor will be more acceptable than a fission reactor and if it does work then maybe having electric cars will be tenable and all the has to be done is find a way to make batteries that are eco friendly and easy to recycle….
